INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study

Computer Addiction can be described as the excessive or

compulsive use of the computer which persists despite serious negative

consequences for personal, social, or occupational function. Block

conceptualized computer addiction involves online and/or offline computer

usage and consists of at least three subtypes: excessive gaming, sexual

preoccupations, and e-mail/text messaging. The term offline computer

addiction is normally used when speaking about excessive gaming behavior,

which can be practiced both offline and online. Online computer addiction,

also known as Internet addiction because most cases of these are related to

the excessive use of the Internet.

The concerns our Filipino Youth in regards to their tendency to

be addicted to computer are very high nowadays. Most of them are well

addicted to what we so called MMOPRGs (Masively Multiplayer Online Role

Playing Games). When a person plays one of these games, he or she is

hooked into a fantasy world which separates the person from the real

world; neglecting school, real life socialization and interaction with real

world. The players in these games play up to 10-20 hrs a day. If you visit

internet cafes all over the Philippines, you will notice that most young

people from the age of 8 to 30 are hooked into playing online games. A lot

of these young people do not go to school anymore just to play. And

parents don't have knowledge that this problem has been going on.

In Olango Island, computer addiction is a common problem. In

barangay Tungasan, people just want enjoy and have fun especially when

they are bored but they are unaware of consequence of their unwise acts

which can lead to serious health and mental problems. Long-term sleep

deprivation causes drowsiness, difficulty concentrating, and depression of

the immune system. It may also affect job performance, which could lead

to job loss, failed marriages and poor physical condition and even obesity.

This study aims to determine the main cause of computer

addiction. The researchers want to know the number of hours an individual

use internet in a weekly basis. The researchers wants to sought answers

about how much can an individual spend in a day if they are using internet

or visiting internet cafes. The researchers want to suggest ways on how

they can help people who got addicted to computers.

THE PROBLEM

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study determined the computer addiction cases in barangay

Sta. Rosa, Lapu - Lapu City in a week. The findings served as basis of the

proposed recommendation plan. Specifically, the study sought answers for

the following questions:

1. What are the main cause of computer addiction?

b. Online / Offline gaming

c Anti-social or No friends

d Stress or Personal Problems

e. No guidance from the Family

f. Others, specify ___________

2. How many hours do you use internet in a week?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study will benefit to the following stakeholders

Student: The result of the study will serve as references or guide in

the students to be aware in the effects of computer addiction in their
young age.
Parents: The result of the study may give them insights about the

ways on how their children can avoid computer addiction.

Teachers: This study serves as the awareness for teachers to guide

their student in using computers properly and discuss effects of computer

addiction and possible situations that may happen if they continue their

vices.

School administration: The result of the study can generate ideas to

encourage the student to avoid the computer addiction and provide other

avenues or activities that can benefit their well-being.

Community: The result of the study will give help to the community

to have a wider knowledge about the reason on why people used

computer. It can give the community a venue to take action to the said

problem.

RESEARCH MEHODOLOGY

RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT

Olango Island is in Cebu Province, just offshore from (east of)

Mactan Island and Lapu-Lapu city. It is known mainly for its wildlife

sanctuary but also has some fine beaches and dive sites. The Olango Island

Group includes Olango and six smaller islands nearby. The main town and

main port is Santa Rosa on the west coast.There are several ferries, only a

few of which carry vehicles. The most-used route is from a pier next to the

Hilton Hotel on the Lapu-Lapu side to Santa Rosa on Olango. Officially, it is

the Punta Engaño Pier but locals call it the 1 Hilton Pier and taxi drivers may

know the destination as Movenpick. The resort hotel next to it was Hilton

but is now Movenpick. An important pier on Olangoisland itself is the 2

Santa Rosa Pier.This study was conducted at Barangay Tungasan ,Olango

Island , Lapu-Lapu city Phililppines. Barangay Tungasan is composed of 5

sitio’s namely, Centro, Proper, Nangka, Ibabao, Acasia.

RESEARCH RESPONDENTS

The research of this study were the selected people in Barangay

Tungasan. These people were selected via convenient sampling based on

the availability of the residents. There were 30 of them in al and were all

used as respondent of this study.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS

This study utilized a researcher made questionnaire to interview the

people who use computer in Barangay Tungasan. The research prepared

the questionnaire and interviewed them according to their vacant time.

RESEARCH PROCEDURE

This section presents the method of Gathering Data and the

Treatment of the data being gathered.

GATHERING OF DATA

The researcher ask permission to the residents of Barangay

Tungasan to conduct an interview for the improvement of this study. The

reearcher prepared the questionaireanf interviewed them according to

their free time, and many resident agree to interview and to share he/ she

experience of computer addiction to prevent the children to addicted of

computer in their young age.

TREATMENT OF DATA

Frequency Distribution was used to summarize and analyze data

gathered from the responds.

Weighted Mean and Ranking was used to determine the level of

addiction of respondents towards computer.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

The following terms are defined for better understanding :

COMPUTER - an electronic device for storing and processing data,

typically in binary form, according to instructions given to it in a variable

program.

ADDICTION - the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular

substance, thing, or activity.

INTERNET - a global computer network providing a variety of

information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected

networks using standardized communication protocols.

TECHNOLOGY -the branch of knowledge that deals with the

creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society,

and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts,

engineering, applied science, and pure science. It is the application of this

knowledge for practical ends.

As show in table 1, there are 30 respondents that were interviewed

about computer addiction in their barangay. The respondents were aged

11-18 years old and currently-living in barangay Tungasan.

Table 2 shows that most of the respondents answered that the main

cause of Computer Addiction is because of boredom and for fun.Those

people who are lonely, shy, easily bored or suffering from another

addiction or impulse control disorder are especially vulnerable to computer

addiction and it also to help escape from the reality.

Table 3 show that most of the respondents answered that hours use

internet in a week is 0-5 hours because they tend to use internet in a short

period of time. Its depend on how bored they are and if they want to enjoy

more.

Table 4 shows that most of the respondents answered that the money

they will spend in a day is 0- 50 every week.. Most of them don’t earn

money for a living yet so they have a little budget for them to spend in

internet cafes.

recommendations of the study

The study determined the computer addiction in barangay Tungasan,

Lapu-lapu city the findings served specially, the study sought answer for the

The study utilized the statistical methods with the use of a researcher

–made questionnaire. This study was conducted at barangay

Tungasan ,Olango Island Lapu-lapu City , Cebu Philippines. The

respondent of this study were the 30 selected people in barangay

Tungasan. Frequency distribution, weighted mean and ranking were use in

summarizing, analyzing and interpreting the data gathered from the

respondents.

FINDINGS

The following are the findings of the study:

1.The result show that the main cause of the computer addiction is

boredom and for fun.

2.The results show the number of hours they use computer is one to five

hours.

3.The results show that the money they spend in a week is between 10 to

50 pesos.

CONCLUSION

Basing on the results, the researchers can

say that online gaming is not beneficial hobby to start when you are bored

there are many disadvantages that could be fall you and others around of

life they will live. The researchers can also say that most of them got

addicted to computer in an early age most of the respondents use

computer in a short period of time thus spending less amount.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the findings of the study, the researchers recommend it’s

good to avoid using the computer if it not needed or only for leisure time. If

this can’t be avoided, people can use computer but only for a short period

of time to avoid getting addicted to it.
