11 previous lesson! Keep up the good work. Always remember to be honest

14 TEACHER: All right! Let’s have a quick recall of the previous lesson. Last time,

15 you learned about Visual-Verbal Relationship. So, what are Visual-Verbal

16 Relationship? (PAUSE)

2 They are ways of presenting in a simple and attractive manner to catch the

3 reader’s interest. And you already learned that these illustrations help

4 explain concepts easily using graphs, maps, tables, infographics, and

5 charts.

6 I know you are all excited to learn. So, I will not keep you waiting. Don’t

10 TEACHER: Today, you will learn another interesting topic. You are expected to

11 identify the appropriate opinion-marking signals to complete sentence. Are

12 ready? Remember, have fun learning!

14 TEACHER: Did you notice the introductory phrases, such as I think, I believe, I

15 feel, and I hope? Do you have any idea what these words could mean?

16 (PAUSE) Well, these are kinds of introductory phrases are called opinion-

17 marking signals.

19 TEACHER: Let’s start with answering the question: What are opinions?

20 (PAUSE) That is correct! Opinions refer to personal beliefs. They tell

21 about how someone feels, thinks, or takes a stand about something. They

22 are influenced by a person’s experiences, background, knowledge,

emotions,
1 and preferences. Others may agree or disagree with opinions, but they

2 may not prove or disprove them.

3 TEACHER: What are opinions again? (PAUSE) Nice! You are, indeed, listening.

4 Next question is: Do you have any idea about opinion-marking signals?

5 (PAUSE) They are group of words that introduces opinions. Aside from

6 that, they are also used as signal words that will help express and identify

7 opinions. And because they are introductory phrases, they are usually

8 written in the beginning part of a sentence.

14 hope…, I hate…, My favorite…, In my experience…, I am convinced

15 that…, From what I know…, I might be wrong, but… Perhaps…, I

21 sample sentences and identify the opinion-marking signals used.

1 Are you ready to read? (PAUSE) Very good! Let’s start from sentence (a): I feel

2 happy about being a Filipino. This sentence uses the opion marking signal I

3 FEEL. It tells about a personal feeling of being a Filipino. How about this

4 sentence? (b) It seems that Filipinos have strong family ties. (PAUSE) You

5 got it right! The opinion-marking signal used is IT SEEMS. This phrase

6 gives an idea that the opinion is expressed in a less assertive or forceful

7 way. Next. (c) From what I know, Filipinos are known to be hospitable. The

8 opinion-marking used in the sentence is FROM WHAT I KNOW. This

9 statement shows that the speaker is expressing an opinion based on his

10 background. Then we have the next sentence (d) Personally, I think that

11 Filipinos give importance to education. This phrase emphasizes the

12 standpoint of a person. This sentence is stated based on one’s personal

13 nature. Now, let’s have this. (e) Maybe Filipinos are resilient because they

14 find ways to survive. This sentence uses the opinion-marking signal MAYBE

15 to express a mere possibility. How about this sentence? (f) In my

16 experience, Filipino families go to church and pray together. What is the

17 marking-signal word? (PAUSE) That’s right! The opinion-marking signal

18 used IN MY EXPERIENCE. The speaker expressed an opinion that is

19 based on a real and first-hand experience. Let’s try another one, (g) I hope

20 Filipino children will continue to respect their elders by saying “po” and

21 “opo”. What do you think is the opinion-marking signal? (PAUSE) All right.

1 used in this sentence is I HOPE. And the last sentence, (h) It is the belief of

2 the Filipinos that when you respect others, they will respect you as well. This

3 uses the opinion-marking signal IT IS THE BELIEF. The sentence expresses

4 a practice that Filipinos accept as true or real.

6 TEACHER: Well done, Grade 8 learners! You’re doing great! So, take note of the

7 different opinion-marking signals used in the given sentences. These signal

8 words or phrases are used in different manners and for different purposes.

9 However, there are certain opinion-marking signals that can be used in the

10 same manner and for the same purpose, like maybe and probably, based on

11 my experience and in my experience, and I am certain that and I am sure

12 that.

14 TEACHER: Let’s have this picture. What opinions can you share about the

15 picture? (PAUSE) Well, you can come up with opinions by answering the

16 questions like: In your experience, what activities are done in a scouting

17 event? How do you feel about camping?

20 TEACHER: Now, let’s read together the opinions given in the module as answers

21 to the questions. In my experience, we did tent-building, nature-hunting, and

1 nighttime hiking. If I am not mistaken, we did log lifting and played team-

2 building games. I love camping because it is full of fun. I feel that camping

3 is boring since I am not an adventurous person.

5 TEACHER: Thank you, dear learners for reading with me. So, what opinion-

6 marking signals are used in the sentences? (PAUSE) Exactly! The opinion-

7 marking signals used are in my experience, If I am not mistaken, I love, and

8 I feel. In my experience is used to express an opinion that is based on a

9 personal encounter. On the other hand, If I am not mistaken is used to

10 express an uncertain opinion. Furthermore, I love and I feel are used to

11 express opinions that are based on the emotions or feelings of a person.

14 lesson? Do you feel confident using opinion-marking signals in your

15 sentences? (PAUSE) That’s wonderful!

18 express and identify opinions. Opinion-marking signals are usually written at

19 the beginning part of the sentence. In general, opinions are made with the

20 use of opinion-marking signals. They are based on personal experiences,

21 background knowledge, emotions, and preferences. Upon learning these, do


1 you think it’s important to learn and use correctly the different opinion-marking

2 signals? (PAUSE) That’s definitely right! It’s really important because it will add

3 information to personal thoughts, perceptions, or judgments about something. It

4 can also be used to help someone express agreement or assertion in the right

5 way.

Let’s try to check your answer. Number 1 is I feel. I feel dab that many people died

because of the virus. Number two is The best. The best thing that Maria did

during the last few months is planting vegetables. For number three, the correct

answer is I hope. I hope all Filipinos will unite to help our country. Number four

is I should. I should stay at home for me to be safe during this pandemic. And

for the last sentence, the correct answer is I hate. I hate reading fake news

because it causes fear and panic.
