Welcome
Deck the halls with loads of stitching…
WE ARE FULL-ON FESTIVE this
issue! We can’t wait to get out all
our favourite decorations (if we can
find them after our house move
with so many boxes still not
unpacked!). Most of all, we’d like to
add just a few new things. First on
our wish-list is the 3D Nativity on
page 36. You can enjoy stitching a
different image on each side and the
finishing is easy, we promise!
If you have time to think bigger, our cover star is
a real treat (page 20). Blending filament and beads
add magic to a stunning scene of Santa Claus. Plus,
with a stocking little ones will adore, a wreath of
snowy animals and a tribute to cosy Christmas
jumpers, you are truly spoiled for choice!
As you’ll have seen from our cover and leaflet
with this issue, due to circumstances beyond our
control the double kit with this issue is now
delayed until issue 378. Please accept our apologies
– with issue 378 coming out on 30 November, we
hope this will still give you plenty of time to
complete your kits in time for Christmas. For
now, we’ve printed the charts as usual, for those
of you who can’t wait to start them anyway!
Happy Christmas stitching!

MY CRAFT ROOM: SARAH WATKINS
We get to see a glimpse of a
designer’s own craft space…
“I created a studio office in my
garden in North Yorkshire. I wanted
it to look comfortable and lived in,
so I used lots of reclaimed wood for
the shelves and my desk. I bought
an old mill cabinet that has loads
of pigeon holes the right size for
sample pieces of fabric, and holds my
thread holders and cards perfectly.
I’ve also got magnetic white boards
to hold all the needleminders as I
make them, so I can easily see what
stock I have, and it keeps them
from snapping together and being
damaged.” www.etsy.com/uk/shop/

Make a… stocking
Step 1
STITCH your pocket onto the centre of the
square piece of aida, using two strands for the
cross stitch and one for the backstitch. To
stitch the two cuffs (front and back), leave
10
seven blank aida squares on the bottom of the
fabric to be used for the cuff, and then start
stitching the design from the bottom upwards
from this aida square. Fold the stitched cuff in
half lengthways along the top edge of the

design, and then fold under the bottom edge
of unstitched fabric on both sides – your cuff
will slip over the top of the stocking once
assembled. Repeat for the other cuff.
t
t

Step 2
USING the template as a guide, cut two
stockings from red fabric, adding a 1.25cm
(1⁄2in) seam allowance around the curved
40 edge of the stocking, but not across the top.
From the excess fabric cut a strip measuring
23x7.5cm (9x3in). Fold lengthways, and with
a 1.25cm (1⁄2in) seam allowance, sew down
the long seam. Cut away the excess seam
50 allowance, and then turn through to the right
side. Press flat with the seam centre back –
this is your stocking hanger.

Step 3
Durene Jones
PLACE your cuffs over the top of the front
and back stocking pieces, making sure the
seam allowance is turned under at the
bottom both outside and inside the stocking,
and that the fold sits tightly over the stocking
top. Using a sewing machine or by hand,
then popped in

allowance onto the wrong side of the stitched

pocket. Stitch the seam allowance at the top of
the pocket to the wrong side to hold it in place.
on Christmas
Place the pocket on one front stocking piece,
pin then stitch in place, leaving the top open.
Eve! Step 5
PLACE the stocking front and back
right-sides together. Next, machine stitch
around the edge with a 1.25cm (1⁄2in) seam
allowance, leaving the top open. Fold your
hanger in half. Turn under the raw edges.
Place hanger ends inside the stocking and
stitch to the stocking to hold firmly in place.
