Desk to go. Stabilo Pens

The challenge for the brief was to identify any prod-

uct which is currently packaged in single use plastics
and to re-design the packaging using 100% corrugat-
ed cardboard. This project improve a Stabilo pen case
packaging from a one-time use of storage into a pack-
aging that can have longevity, more functionality and
multi - use.

Oliver Corfield 05
Stablio Research.

I researched the Stablio brand and took from their branding a number of aspects. Firstly, the positioning of their logo within a red box design which is normally
placed vertically on the packaging. I included two vertical logos on my product to advertise the brand.
Secondly the colours that Stablio use in their packaging and branding relates to the colour palette of the pens. It was important to identify this in my own pack-
aging branding to represent their colour theme.
Thirdly the hexagon shapes that are used in their advertising and are shaped on the bottom and top of the pens, I used the shapes on the packaging to show the
shapes. I also incorporated the use of the hexagons so when you open the packaging and pull the pens out it reveals a colourful hexagon pattern aligned to the
pen.

Graphics.

I wanted the graphics to communicate how the product can be used to

bring the use of colour to your environment at home or work. From my
research into Stablio I wanted to make sure I used the colour promo-
tion within my graphics linked to the pens and the variety of features. I
wanted to make the graphics tell the story of the experience for the user.
So when you open the pen case and pull the second layer out it reveals
strips of the colours that are in the case and a continuous pattern of
colour. When tidying away the pens the hexagon pattern indicates which
colour goes where to guide a uniform approach to storage of the pens.

Bird Bar.

The Bird Bar creates a space for birds to

feed hanging on a washing line. This ad-
dresses how you may need to hang a bird
feeder to a garden/home space when you
may be unable to attach a feeder to a fence
or wall or have limited space such as a bal-
cony or small patio area.

Product development.
My Initial Thoughts when reciving this group
project was i thought the design is interesting because
of the 5 feeding sections and the food is contained well
within the base structure. Alos I was concerned that the
base structure would be difficult to fabricate because of
the thine walls and complex angles.

Next step was to 3D

Final design

Design rethink and simplification.

It was decided to use a MDF and cut the sides of the feeder container using a laser cutter.
To help join the sides together a lattice edge would be cut to create a stronger join rather
than glue. Then for the actually design to use plastic and then laser cut it. That means its one
of our batch production processes. So the MDF is just practice to understand what works
because its a cheaper material to work with.

Packaging
& Marketing.
This product went to market and needed
to enable the customer to carry the prod-
uct home without damage or tangling of the
cords. To enable this to happen we needed
to develop packaging that wrapped around
the product and had a carry handle for easy
lifting. The development of the design of the
carrier required us to use recyclable card-
board that would be flexible and supportive
of the product as well as being sustainable.
The carrier was used as a holder for the prod-
uct on the shelf and was easy for the custom-
er to pick up and explore whilst browsing the
product as well as carrying home.

The wulver in
you.
The design requirement was to make a gift
box out of pulp that needed to be transport-
ed through the post or delivered by hand. The
product was to be sent to a ‘ hero’ who had been
chosen because they had gone above and be-
yond during the Covid pandemic and deserved
to receive acknowledgement for their dedica-
tion and hard work to support others during
this challenging time. The product needed to
be bespoke to the individual receiving it and
required me to find out through interview their
own personal journey so the product could be
adapted to reflect their interests, background
and experience.

At the start of the project I needed to investigate dif-
ferent materials that would be strong enough and
sturdy enough to protect the egg and withstand trav-
elling in the mail. I experimented with rice flour, salt
and oats. The best recipe was using newspaper, hot
water, salt, glue and rice flour. This was used in my
final model and did protect the egg during the trav-
elled allowing my Hero to receive her egg intact.

Gifting
& Feedback.
At the end of this project I hand delivered
my pulp gift box that had different lay-
ers of pulp to protect and secure during
transportation the surprise inside without
it being damaged. The feedback from my
Hero reflected her surprise at receiving
the gift and its relevancy to her. The time
spent interviewing her had allowed me
to personally create a unique gift and her
feedback was that she was overwhelmed
and thankful for the acknowledgement of
her hard work and dedication to her job.

individual components to reconstruct the oven
material into a coffee table. I considered which
parts of the oven could be re-used and repur-
posed whilst wanting to ensure that the oven
