Abstract

There are a lot of factors that affect the preference of Grade 10 Students in

choosing a track, this study aims to determine the most preferred track of Grade 10

Students and what is the factor that it affects their decision the most, it could be because

of their family’s decision, interest/abilities, or because of their friends. The research tool

in this study is survey questionnaire. The questionnaire was composed of the basic

information about our respondents, their preferred track and strand and the factors

affecting their decision.

Chapter I

Introduction

Background of the study

Northville 15 Integrated School (NV15IS) is a learning institution that has

Kindergarten to Grade 12. It is formerly known as Northville 15 Elementary School that

was built in the year 2010 and became an Integrated School in the year 2011. In the year

2017, NV15IS added Senior High School (SHS) because of the policy of Department of

Education (DepEd) which is the Republic Act (RA) 10533 also known as "Enhanced

Basic Education Act of 2013". This act strengthens its` curriculum and increase the

number of year in basic education, and to broaden the goals of its education for college

preparation. The source was from officialgazette.gov.ph/2013/05/15/republic-act-no-

10533/. The available tracks as of now are Technical Vocational Livelihood (TVL) and

Academic Track. Under TVL are bartending, Information Communication Technology

(ICT), cookery, and fashion designing. Under Academic Track is Accountancy Business

Management (ABM).

The researchers found out that there are only 255 students who continued their

studies in SHS here in NV15IS, there are 125 students in Grade 11 and the remaining

students are in Grade 12. Additionally, the researchers observed that the school lacks of

tracks because there are only 2 tracks available as of now here in NV15IS that is why the

researchers came up with the idea of conducting this research.

Statement of the objective

The main objective of this study is to determine the preferred Senior High School

track of every Grade 10 student.

1. How may the number of Grade 10 students will be determined in the terms of:

1.1 preferred tracks;

1.2 preferred school;

1.3 factors that influence their choice of SHS track:

1.3.1 parental influence;

1.3.2 interest/abilities;

1.3.3 friends

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study covers the preferred Senior High School tracks of every grade 10

students. Furthermore, it concentrates on their preferred school and track, and the factors
affecting their SHS choice. This may serve as a means to gather data about Grade 10

students.

This study does not include Grade 7, 8, and 9 students. This study is only limited

to the Grade 10 students enrolled in the year 2019-2020 of NV15IS. Also, the researchers

are excluded from answering the survey questionnaire because the results would be

biased if the researchers would include themselves. The students who were not present in

the time when the researchers gathered the data were not included to this study. In

addition, this study focuses on the factors that affects the respondents’ decisions such as

parental influence, interest/abilities and friends. There may be more factors however; it

will not be within this study.

The researchers conducted this research through the use of survey questionnaire

that was accumulated within the month of March 2020. This method was the basis of this

research to determine their preferred track and the factors that can affect their decisions.

On the contrary, there are still some disadvantages on using the survey questionnaire.

According to Jackwerth (2018) the students might not take a survey questionnaire

seriously and their answers can be unsuitable to our given questions but of course, it is

normally for us students not to take such question seriously, especially if they cannot

understand the questions, but by explaining the questions clearly it will help them to

understand and to answer our given questions easily by stating our purpose on why we

conducted this research.

Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to the teachers, students, principal, and future

researchers.

Teachers will know who are the students that they need to focus on. Additionally,

they will have enough time to prepare for the curriculum.

Students will be informed and they will have enough time to think and prepare for

their preferred track and it might affect their decision where they will continue their study

in Senior High School.

The principal will be informed about the preferred track of Grade 10 students in

NV15IS for SHS and he will have an idea on the possible tracks that he should focus on

and so that he can estimate how many teachers who will be in charge in a specific track.

Future researcher can have an idea by reading our research and through that they

can investigate to improve and expound our research, it will help them to make a good

research in the near future.

Chapter II

Review of Related Literature

A lot of factors must be considered in choosing a track according to Fixer (2018)

that the leading factor that affect the students preferred track are family related factors,

economic factor which includes the employability and availability, this is similar to

Divino (2016) it stated that family related is the factor that affects the most students

decision to their preferred track. However, Moneva (2019) stated that the family and
employability do not affect the decisions of the students in choosing a track for SHS

while socio-economic status and peer influence affects the decisions of the students. On

the other hand, stated by Pascual (2016), skills and personalities of the students are really

the factors that affects the decisions of the students. Ongchoco (2018) article agrees that

skills and personalities are the one that affects the preferred tracks of the students. Sierra

(2015) stated that the family related factor, peer influence, skills and personalities place a

big role in choosing a track. Lancaster (2017) agrees with Divino that socio-economic

status is significantly related to the choice of track of the student.

Chapter III

Methodology

Research Design

In this study, the researchers used non-experimental quantitative research by

using a survey questionnaire. According to tolibguides.usc.edu (2020), quantitative

method emphasize objective measurement and the statistical, mathematical, or numerical

analysis of data collected through polls, questionnaires, and surveys, or by manipulating

pre-existing statistical data using computational techniques. Quantitative research focuses

on gathering numerical data and generalizing it across groups of people or to explain a

particular phenomenon. The researchers used the total population sampling method in

gathering data. According to opentextbc.ca (2017), non-experimental research is a

research that lacks the manipulation of an independent variable, random assignment of

respondents to condition or order of conditions, or both. For this study, the researchers

used a survey questionnaire to gather data from the respondents. According to Harland
(2020) quantitative survey ask questions with specific, usually numerical answer so that

we can analyse the data quickly. They are useful for gathering large amounts of data, but

they are not design to gather descriptive information.

Respondents

In this study, there are four levels in Junior High School which are Grade 7 to

Grade 10 but only the Grade 10 students enrolled in school year 2019-2020 are the

selected students to be the respondents of this study. The researchers selected every

Grade 10 students because they are the only ones that will pursue SHS tracks next school

year.

Instrument

In this study, the instrument that the researchers used to collect data was a survey

questionnaire. They adapted and modified the questionnaire of Dr. Nancy T. Pascual in

her study about ‘Factors Affecting High School Students’ Career Preference: A Basis for

Career Planning Program’ (2016) urs.edu.ph/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/2261-4881-1-

PB.pdf they emailed her and asked for permission in using her survey questionnaire. The

survey questionnaire consists of three parts. The first part of the questionnaire gathered

the respondents` preferred Senior High School. The second part of the questionnaire was

a checklist which gathered the respondents` preferred Senior High School track and the

strand under their preferred track. Lastly, the third part of the questionnaire was also a

checklist which gathered the factors that affect the Senior High Schools` track and strand

preference.

Data Gathering Procedure and Ethics Protocol

To gather the data from the respondents, the researchers used a survey

questionnaire, this study applied the total population sampling technique in gathering the

data. The first thing that the researchers did was the preparation of the survey

questionnaire that was distributed to the respondents. The next thing they did was to ask

for approval of the principal for gathering the data by giving a letter. Then, they

distributed the survey questionnaires to the respondents, but before that they asked for

permission to the teacher that was in charge in the time when they distributed the

questionnaires. After distributing, the respondents answered the given questionnaire.

Afterwards, the researchers collected the paper that was answered by their respondents.

Then, they tabulated and studied the data that was collected by the researchers. Lastly,

they analysed the results and through that they were able to determine the most chosen

track of every Grade 10 student. The researchers made sure that the respondents have

their confidentiality by not including their personal profiles, in order to protect their

identity.

Data Analysis

For this study, the researchers used the frequency distribution table as a statistical

method. According to r-tutor.com (2009), the frequency distribution of a data variable is

a summary of the data occurrence in a collecting of non-overlapping categories. In

addition, according to www.ck12.org (2020), a frequency table is way of summarizing

data by depicting the number of times a data value occurs. To show this, a frequency

table organizes the information in a table with three or more separate columns. According

to www.150.statcan.gc.ca (2017) frequency distributions are portrayed as frequency

tables, histograms, or polygons. Frequency distribution tables can be used for both

categorical and numeric variables.

115 of them who will continue their studies here in our school while the least preferred

school are HAU, SNHS, ACNHS, LVCC, AUF, FGNMHS, and AHS, every mentioned

schools has one students that chose their preferred school to continue their studies and the

remaining schools which are SPSCF, PSAU, RCC, NEU, SI, MONTESSORI, DJNH,

ACSHS and ST. NATHANIEL has few students in the total of 63 students from Grade 10

students in NV15IS that will transfer to their institutions. We also figured out there are

still 42 students who are still undecided as of now on where they will continue their

studies in SHS.

Table III shows that the factor affecting their decision the most is their personal

choice, 192 students agrees that it is their personal choice and out of 227 students, only

35 students disagree with it. Next to that, financial status of their family is the second

factor that affects their decision in choosing their preferred track, there are 171 students

agrees while 56 students disagree in this factor. Followed by the availability of job in the

future, in this factor there 158 students agrees and 69 students disagree. In addition, 146

students agree that their choice of school affects their preferred track and 81 students

answered that it did not affects their preferred tracks. 125 students agree that it is their

childhood dream that is why they want to take their preferred track while 102 students

did not agree with it. Additionally, 124 students answered that they want to take their

preferred track because it reflects their talents and only 103 disagree in this part. 123

students agree that their preferred track is connected to their favourite subject while 104

students disagree in this factor. 75 students agree that their preferred track is their friend’s

preferences track and 152 students did not agree in this factor. Lastly, 155 students

disagree that their parents are the one who are choosing their track while 72 students
answered that their preferred track is their parent’s choice. To support the statement that

the factor that affects their choice is because of their personal choice, the researchers

found a similar study that supports this statement, It is from the study ‘Factors Affecting

the Choice of School and Students’ Level of Interest towards the Maritime Program’

(2015), it states in this study that the factor that affects their decision is because of their

own or personal choice.

Chapter V

Conclusion

Summary

This study aims to identify the preferred Senior High School track of every Grade

10 student which this study revealed that the most preferred SHS track of Grade 10

students is TVL followed by, Academic track and Arts &Design. While the least

preferred SHS track of Grade 10 students is Sports. Researchers have noticed that the

factor affecting their decision the most in choosing their track is their interest\abilities

because most of the students answered that it is connected to their favourite subject, their

childhood dream, personal choice and it reflects their talents. Lastly, they want to take

that specific track because of their choice of school. Also, this study revealed that the

parental influence is the second factor that affects their preferred track. It shows that the

students considered their financial status of their family and some of them answered that

their parents are the ones who are choosing their track. While only few students

considered that their friends’ preference SHS track affects their decision in choosing their

track.
Recommendation

For the future researchers that would decide to conduct a similar topic from this

study, the researchers suggests that you might consider putting a statistical basis of the

sub factors under the factors as a supporting evidence for determining the factors that

affects the preferred SHS tracks of Grade 10 students.
