Chapter I

THE PROBLEM

Introduction

Drawing is a distinct form of communication that has the power to communicate ideas

and express with just a medium. Drawing also improves learning from the academic side, as it

facilitates visual perception and interpretive skills.

Through the act of drawing, students can develop observational and analytical skills that

could be applied to other subjects as it encourages creativity, problem-solving capabilities,

critical thinking, and in which it turn promotes independent thinking.

According to Galvez (2018), each learner have their unique ways of responding to

information. Therefore, it is advantageous for teachers to use varieties of formats and modes to

teach lesson contents.

Ochshorn (2016), highlights the significance of arts education as it enhances

performance in various areas. It has been shown to improve critical thinking skills, creativity,

academic participation, and overall learning outcomes. According to him incorporating art into

various subjects has been proven to be more effective.

Terada (2019), in his article "The Science of Drawing and Memory" It forces students to

wrestle with their learning and recreate it in a way that makes sense to them. The researchers

also claim that drawing improves recall due to the way information is processed in memory.
Cognitive pluralism wa crucial method for curriculum development that Eisner (2017),

presented. Because every learner processes and interprets information differently, cognitive

pluralism highlights the need to give pupils a variety of opportunities to learn and express what

they have learned through a variety of different mediums. Teachers can better accomodate

each student's unique learning preferences by providing a variety of representation options,

such as visual aids, written assignments, and oral presentations. This strategy not only improves

the learning experience for students but also fosters inclusivity and diversity in the classroom.

Numerous authors like Caldwell and Vaughan (2012) et. al.

Hartle (2015), Whitmer and Strickland (2011), Reeves (2007), shown numerous cognitive

benefits of art instruction, including improved academic performance. Self-expression,

imagination, and creativity all pique atudent's interest and engage their brains.

In recent years, there has been a significant shift in the art world towards digital art as

opposed to traditional forms. Drawing has come a long way since the days of charcoal and

pencil paper. With technological advancements, artists now have access to a variety of digital

tools that allow them to create stunning pieces of artwork with ease. Apps such as IBISPaint,

Adobe, Procreate, and KNITA are among the most popular among professional artists due to

their feature-rich interfaces and intuitive controls. The accessibility and versatility of digital art

are unmatched in terms of flexibility and speed allowing creative professionals to realize their

visions easily without limitations for innovation or technical skills mastery. Today, traditional art

is profoundly impacted by digital art, which has influenced daily life Schukei (2019) and Sanders

(2018).
Despite the critical role of drawing skills in visual communication and art education,

there is a significant shortage of research on how such skills affect students performance across

academic disciplines. While some studies suggest that individuals with strong drawing abilities

may have better problem-solving, and visual-motor integration skills, there is limited empirical

evidence to support these claims. More importantly, educators are grappling with questions

about what specific aspects of drawing instruction or assessment measure student learning

outcomes effectively.

One of the primary objectives of this research is to harness the students' drawing skills.

By doing so, researchers aim to unlock their full potential and enhance their overall academic

performance. Drawing is a powerful tool that can help students develop their creativity, critical

thinking, and problem-solving abilities. This study seeks to explore the benefits of incorporating

drawing into the curriculum and how it can positively impact students' learning outcomes.

Teachers, can use drawings as a tool to assess students' understanding of complex

concepts. They can also use drawings to create engaging and interactive lessons that cater to

different learning styles.

Students themselves can benefit greatly from using their drawing skills in academic

performance. Drawing can help them visualize and understand abstract concepts, making it

easier to retain information. It can also boost their creativity and confidence, which can

translate into better academic performance overall.

Objectives of the Problem

This study aims to determine the Effects of Utilizing Drawing Skills in Academic

Performances of Technical Drafting Students.

Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions:

1. To identify how can drawing skills be beneficial in academic performance?

2. Is there any potential downsides in utilizing drawing skills in academic performances of

Technical Drafting Students?

REVIEW LITERATURE

This chapter presents the related literature gathered by the researchers from previous

researchers and from information taken through readings at publishes books, articles, and

Internet. It includes Review of Related Foreign Literature, Review of Related Local Literature

and Review of Studies relevant to the present study.

Local Literature

According to Jolley (2016), in his article entitled The Importance of Arts Education

recapped that arts education promotes some benefits in a variety of ways. Some of the

advantages of arts education are: developing the students' imagination and creativity; allowing

them to understand and express their feelings and ideas; aiding them to understand and

visualize other core subjects; helping them to observe the world around them; supporting them

in the decisions- making and in solving problems; and in developing values such as

concentration and persistence.

Local Studies

According to Wong, Peteros, Sanchez (2018), Assessing Technical Drawing Proficiency in

the Strengthened Technical Vocational-Education Program (STVEP]. The K-12 curriculum

prepares students with the technical knowledge and skills requirements for various

opportunities of the 21st century, thus exploring the identified profile variables and the

perception of the Technical Drawing competencies in preparation for the Technical Vocational

training courses intended for respondents. A descriptive method approach was employed, and

a close-ended type of questionnaire to gather data from Grade 9 student respondents selected

using random sampling. The findings reveal a significant relationship between some of the

students' perceptions of technical drawing competencies and the identified profile variables,

such as the students' perception of the adequacy of strongly linked facilities to mensuration,

freehand drawing, lettering, construct geometric figures and construct pictorial drawing

competencies.
Based on the study of Punzalan (2018), entitled The Impact of Visual Arts in Students’

Academic Performance. The challenge for Visual Arts integration should not focus only on a

particular art discipline alone like Humanities (Art Appreciation) somewhat it should extend

across the curriculum. The major problem of this study was to assess the impact of visual art on

the performance of the students from the College of Education, Bulacan State University. The

study made use of experimental research design. Results of the study revealed that significant

difference exists in the posttest performances of the experimental and control groups, in other

words, the group who utilized the visual arts in studying art appreciation recorded significantly

helps performance than those who used the traditional lecture-discussion method.

According to the study of Da silva (2022), entitled Drawing skills at the beginning of

higher education: Teachers’ perspectives, expectations, and realities. There has been a plethora

of studies on drawing in its didactic, neurological, and physiological components, with findings

that strengthen and support the idea that drawing plays a central role in the development of

conceptual thinking and abductive reasoning. These findings are significant when advocating for

drawing as a learning tool in S.T.E.M., but also, for drawing to play a different role in education

overall. To determine whether these policies impact the competencies, skills, and visual literacy

of those who pursue visual arts studies, we surveyed higher education teachers regarding their

perceptions of student drawing skills as they begin college degrees ranging from fine arts to

design. Some survey findings point to weak areas, particularly in perspective drawing and

preparatory drawings and sketches. The teachers suggested that the causes were mostly

political. These findings should be investigated further, specifically through follow-up interviews
and a survey of first-and second-year students enrolled in the courses taught at the educational

institutions under analysis.

Foreign Literature

In the study of How the arts advance student learning by the research department at

The Oregon Community Foundation (2013), as part of the evaluation of the Studio to School

Initiative. The Initiative evaluation is assessing the effectiveness of the Initiative in meeting its

goals to expand arts education opportunities for youth through the development of high-

quality, sustainable, equitable arts education programming. To do this, the research

department is collecting data about the work of the 18 Studio to School projects that are

funded through the Initiative as well as providing information to support development of arts

education programming, such as this report. We are grateful to many people, including Deb

Vaughn and Marna Stalcup.

Foreign Studies

According to Zhang (2018), Learning by drawing can be an effective strategy for

supporting science text comprehension. However, drawing can also be cognitively demanding

and time consuming, and students may not create quality drawings without sufficient guidance.

Furthermore, evidence for drawing is often based on comparisons to weak control conditions,

such as students who only read the text without provided illustrations. In this review, we

synthesize past research to help draw boundary conditions for learning by drawing, focusing on

the role of comparison conditions and drawing guidance.

Yu and Li (2022), cited that a study of practical drawing skills and knowledge

transferable skills of children based on STEAM education. This study assesses children’s

practical drawing skills and transferable skills based on the global features of their realistic

figure drawing. The drawings incorporate the visual information and the multidisciplinary

knowledge that children acquire. The assessment variables of the global features are

observation perspectives, baseline, and comparison.

According to Le (2022), Team-based learning in online education: the development of

students’ creative thinking skills in digital art. A person cultivates their creative skills influenced

by various types of activities. The purpose of the work is to study the peculiarities of the

development of students’ creative thinking skills, which are interrelated with the development

of appropriate stages of team teaching, as well as to determine the impact of creative thinking

on the indicators of academic performance and motivation to learn. The authors used the

methods of sociological survey, which allowed them to determine that the largest number of

students had mastered the skills of discipline (27%) and emotionality (21%) to a greater extent

at the initial stage of the study.

Guerrette (2018), point out on his study about The Effect on motivation and confidence

of the Art Student of Low Socioeconomic Status. This action-based research study used student

and teacher surveys, as well as researcher observations to examine the effect of formative

assessment and exploratory art education strategies in a high poverty school district. Both

student perception of ability and confidence in the arts is often based on their previous

experiences and past exposure to the arts. This research study sought to investigate students’
experience of art class through exploratory learning, along with the use of formative

assessment, to best inform students ways to be successful while fostering a growth mindset.

Success was shown by completed student work, held to a high standard by the student. Student

engagement and growth through motivated learning, greatly depended on their attendance in

school and knowing that their progress and presence mattered.

Slice (2019), studied the significance of art education as a part of public education in

America has been greatly debated since public education’s inception. While the most recently

passed education bill includes art as a part of a well-rounded education, there is a simultaneous

shift in focus towards standardized test scores. This raises several questions around art

education’s impact not only on standardized test scores but on the academic and personal

development of students. The current relevant research shows compelling evidence that art

education does positively impact critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving skills.

Moreover, Olugbenga (2016), studied the Comparative Effectiveness of Animated

Drawings and Selected Instructional Strategies on Students’ Performance in creative arts in

nigeria. This research adopted the design and development type. The between groups repeated

measure design compared pretest and post-test scores of participants to identify differences

after treatment. To validate the instruments, test re-test method was used; Pearson product

moment correlation coefficient yielded a reliability value of .94. Also, 674 upper basic school

students consisting of 387 public and 287 private schools students, 338 males, and 336 females

were involved in the study. Seven research questions and seven corresponding hypotheses

were raised and tested respectively. ANOVA and t-test were used for hypotheses testing.
Findings of the study showed that computer-based animated drawings instruction enhanced

performance.

Chapter III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the method used, subject of the study, research design and

research locale.

Research Design

The researchers used descriptive research design to show and illustrate the Utilization of

Technical Drafting Students in Tanauan Institute Inc. Senior High School regarding the

importance of a drawing skills in the academic performance. Descriptive research design will be

used due to the reason that this is the appropriate to the research topic. A descriptive was used

in conducting this study because it aims to explore the individual opinions of people.

According to McCombes (2019), Descriptive studies goals to as it should be and

systematically describe a population, scenario or phenomenon. It can solution what, where,

while and the way questions, however now no longer why questions. A descriptive studies

layout can use a huge sort of studies techniques to analyze one or extra variables. Unlike in

experimental studies, the researcher does now no longer manage or control any of the

variables, however most effective observes and measures them.

Respondents of Study
There is a total of 22 grade 12 Technical Drafting students currently enrolled at Tanauan

Institute; the researchers decided to ask for the cooperation of 3 of them to be this study’s

participants. These three respondents represent the rest of the population of grade 12

technical drafting in Tanauan Institute and were given the chance to talk about their insights on

the topic being studied.

The researchers used random sampling as the sampling design in selecting respondents.

Random sampling is a sampling technique in which each member of a population has an equal

chance of being chosen through the use of an unbiased selection method. Each subject in the

sample is given a number, and then the sample is chosen by a random method. According to

Singh (2003) Random Sampling is the simplest and most common method of selecting a sample,

in which the. sample is selected unit by unit, with equal probability of selection for each unit at

each draw.

Research Locale

The study was conducted at Tanauan Institute Inc. Senior High School. Located at J.

Gonzales Street, Barangay 4, Tanauan City, Batangas, Philippines.
