CHAPTER 1

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Mental health is the state of your mind that influences your thinking, feeling,

and action. It also includes the emotional, psychological, and social well-

being of a person. It is crucial in all aspects of life, from youth and juvenility

to maturity.

One of the problems people encounter during this pandemic is a lack of

attention to mental health. This type of case could have a crucial impact on

person’s studies, decision-making, and social well-being. Being physically

and mentally healthy during this pandemic is a goal for everyone. To begin

with, everyone needs to be mentally stable, especially those who are

adjusting to the new normal. Physical health does have a positive and

negative impact on mental health.

Mental health emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy mentality

to live a healthy life. Some may ask, what is the difference between mental

health and mental illness? For starters, Mental Health is a positive concept

while mental illness is a pessimistic concept. Anxiety, depression, psychosis,

and an eating disorder are all example of mental diseases. Mental health is

concerned with the proper functioning and wellness of the mind. Mental

illness is concerned with the problems regarding human thinking,

psychological state, drugs, and other associated issues.

Mental and physical health are essential components of complete well-

being. Depression, for example, raises the risk of various types of physical

health issues, especially long -term diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and

stroke. The existence of chronic illnesses can elevate the likelihood of

developing mental illness. It is crucial to acknowledge that a person’s

mental health can fluctuate over time, depending on a variety of conditions.

When person’s resources and coping abilities are strained beyond their

limits, their mental health may suffer.

Mental illness can make it difficult for someone to cope with work,

relationships, and other demands. The relationship between stress and

mental illness is complex, but it is known that stress can worsen an episode

of mental illness. Most people can manage their mental illness with

medication, counseling, or both. Mental illness can affect working and

personal relationships. Anxiety disorder, Bipolar affective disorder,

Depression, Eating disorder, Paranoia, PTSD, Psychosis, and Schizophrenia

are a group of mental disorders.

Mental health problems have a huge impact on a student’s academic

performance. Student’s lives are highly affected by mental health problems

in many areas such as Academic achievement, Physical health, Satisfaction

with High school experiences, and negatively impacting relationships with

Friends and Family. These issues can have long term consequences for

students and can affect their future employment, well-being, and overall

health. Poor mental health contributes to lack of motivation and problems in

focusing which can lead to failing grades.

Theoretical framework

According to World Health Organization (WHO),Footnote1 childhood and

adolescence are considered to be critical stages for the development of skills

in self-control, social interaction and learning. This can affect the mental

health and well-being of children and adolescents, whereas exposure to risk

factors (e.g. bullying at school) can negatively affect them in the long-term.

As the rates of mental health and behavioral problems at the population level

are high and continue to increase, healthcare systems could benefit from

employing additional tools and methodologies.

Two of the objectives identified in the WHO’s comprehensive mental health

plan [1] refer to (a) the provision of comprehensive and integrated mental

health and social care services and (b) the strengthening of evidence-based

information systems. In order to analyse and assess the functionality and

operational capability of mental healthcare services, identification of

correlations and relationships within such systems would provide a better

insight related to the services provided. Such an approach would then easily

provide an evidence-base for the consequences of a high socioeconomic

burden of mental diseases, apart from the medical and emotional one, not

only on the micro- (e.g. individuals and their families) level, but on the

meso- (e.g. school population) and macro- (e.g. nation) level as well.

It is the aim of the current paper to suggest an integrated system’s approach

based on General Systems Theory to show that the application and

exploitation of such frameworks in a very specialized and focused attempt

can help to define the individual and population relationships, characteristics

and interactions inside and outside a system. Moreover, the assessment of

the efficiency and operational capability within an existing mental

healthcare provision center allows the observation and identification of a

correspondence between social, economic and operational indicators. A

description of these parameters are provided hereinafter, based on semi-

structured interviews with the staff of the Hellenic Center of Mental Health

and Research.

Language, socio-emotional and cognitive development in children and

adolescents with mental health issues is getting increased attention over the

last years. Establishing communication patterns and addressing behavioural

diversities among this population should be of priority, along with a better

understanding in a large variety of patient characteristics within the

operational framework of mental healthcare centers. Therefore, the

relationships between provided services and operational capability should

become more evident. As integrated systems’ approaches are still missing to

predict the efficiency of treatment services in a macroscopic scale, a General

Systems Theory framework is hereby proposed. This framework is applied

and tested against the operational framework of the Hellenic Center of

Mental Health and Research, in order to identify the need of such an

approach and the strong cooperation between medical and population

interactions. Using such frameworks as a prerequisite to identify important

factors affecting population states can lead to evaluating their impact on the

treatment outcome and depict the complexity of pathways potentially related

to the children’s development.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Foreign Literature

According to Nurseskasatmata, Suharto, Ramayanti, and Yunalia (2020), The

world continues to battle the day to day issues of the coronavirus pandemic, one aspect

is the increasing problem of mental health for students. As schools have closed down

and have suddenly transitioned to online classes. The model is currently the best

alternative as keeping schools open poses a safety risk for students. Student with pre-

existing mental health problems such as stress disorder, general anxiety disorder, post-

traumatic stress disorder, depression, or loneliness have become more vulnerable due to

lockdown polices and showed themselves in different ways. Lockdowns, travel

restrictions, school closings, and social/physical distancing have created a level of

social isolation previously unseen across the globe. These upsends, for many, can have

profound consequences on one’s mental health.

According to Omar, Bakar, Wae-esor, and Othman(2021), Mental health refers to

cognitive, behavioral, emotional well-being. Occasionally, the term mental health is

used to refer to the absence of a mental illness. Mental health or sanity refers to an

individual’s a social well-being, thoughts, and emotions. The outbreak of COVID-19

and the widespread transmission of the virus in different countries have deteriorated the

mental health of students in terms of family, financial, and campus relocation. This

study determined how family, financial, and campus relocation affect students’ mental

health during a pandemic. The findings indicate that family, financial, and campus

migration all have a strong correlation with students’ mental health. Additionally, the

study’s findings established that family, financial, and campus migration were all

strongly associated with students’ mental health. The data demonstrate that family and

finance have a beneficia effects on students’ mental health. Meanwhile, campus

relocation has the most beneficial effect on students’ mental health. We can conclude

from these findings that family, financial, and the campus, relocation have had a

substantial impact on students’ mental health.

FOREIGN LITERATURE

According to Chen and Lucock (2022), The higher education students’ mental

health has been a growing concern in recent years even before the COVID-19

pandemic. The stresses and restrictions associated with pandemic have put students at

greater risk of developing mental health issues, which may significantly impair their

academic success, social interactions, and future career and personal opportunities. The

study aimed to understand the mental health status of students at an early stage in the

pandemic and to investigate factors associated with higher levels of distress. Higher

levels of distress were associated with lower levels of exercising, higher levels tobacco

use, and several life events associated with the pandemic and lockdown, such as

canceled events, worsening of personal relationships, and financial concerns. This study

tackles the importance of long-term monitoring and mental health support for students.

According to Camacho-Zuñiga, Pego, Escamilla, and Hosseini (2021), The

COVID-19 pandemic and the enforced restrictions have harshly affected educational

sectors in 161 countries around the world. With more than 1.6 billion students away

from normal school life, the crisis threatens the teaching and learning processes and the

students’ emotional health. Herein, it presents the result of a careful assessment of the

feeling of over 13,000 students at high school, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels

from the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic The results indicate a generally low energy

level and dominance of negative feelings among the students regardless of their

academic state. They have recorded five responses (being anxious, stressed,

overwhelmed, tired, and depressed) as the most frequently reported feelings in the time

of lockdown. Overall, 14% of those who have reported suffering from these feelings

have also identified a need for professional help in managing their feelings throughout

the quarantine period. The current study also presents several strategies to combat the

undesirable consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Grubic, Badovinac, and Johri (2020) With the global development of

the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak, the psychological issues which

accompany this pandemic have rapidly compounded its public health burden. Emerging

research assessing the mental health implications of COVID-19 has identified a

heightened prevalence of moderate-to-severe self-reported depressive and anxious

symptomatology among the general public, reflecting the widespread effects of

uncertainty and health-related fears. However, further research that investigates beyond

the population level is required to understand the individualized disruption of lives and

routines as a result of COVID-19 and its associated psychological impacts. For

students, heightened levels of psychological distress and downstream negative

academic consequences are prevalent under normal circumstances. Based on insights

from research examining the impact of academic disruptions on students, it is

reasonable to venture that students may experience reduced motivation toward studies,

increased pressures to learn independently, abandonment of daily routines, and

potentially higher rates of dropout as direct consequences of these measures. Thus, by

increasing academic stressors in a population with heightened pre-existing stress levels

and a potentially reduced ability to rely on typical coping strategies, such as families

who themselves may be experiencing heightened distress, the COVID-19 pandemic has

placed an unprecedented mental health burden on students, which urgently requires

further examination and immediate intervention. This study has explored the impact of

COVID-19 on student education and well-being. Approximately 25% of their sample

reported experiencing anxiety symptoms, which were positively correlated with

increased concerns about academic delays, economic effects of the pandemic, and

impacts on daily life. Furthermore, among the many student surveys administered

worldwide, one survey by Young Minds reported that 83% of young respondents

agreed that the pandemic worsened pre-existing mental health conditions, mainly due to

school closures, loss of routine, and restricted social connections.

As Keyes (2002) describes, we can think of our mental health as a continuum, with

languishing at one end and flourishing at the other. By starting a dialogue and showing

that we care, we can help each other get the help we need and potentially begin to feel

better. According to Allport, a fully developed and well-functioning individual

manifests the following features such as, the variety of interests and the zeal to pursue

them, the ability to accomplish daily responsibilities, including self-care, and A mature

insight into his internal and external worlds. When a person behaves oddly or deviates

from the societal standards of normality, Gordon Allport (1937) mentioned in his

studies that mental health and illness are not two independent constructs. They are two

poles of a linear sequence and keep moving throughout the lifetime. He was the first to

determine that: certain consistencies in a person's behavior may reflect some sort of

inner psychological quality.

According to Leshner, Scherer, and Graduate Education (2021), Student wellbeing

is foundational to academic success. Studies have found the dropout rates for students

with a diagnosed mental health problem range from 43 percent to as high as 86 percent.

While dealing with stress is a normal part of life, for some students, stress can

adversely affect their physical, emotional, and psychological health, particularly given

that adolescence and early adulthood are when most mental illnesses are first

manifested. In addition to students who may develop mental health challenges during

their time in postsecondary education, many students arrive on campus with a mental

health problem or have experienced significant trauma in their lives, which can also

negatively affect physical, emotional, and psychological wellbeing. The nation's

institutions of higher education are seeing increasing levels of mental illness, substance

use, and other forms of emotional distress among their students. Some of the

problematic trends have been ongoing for decades. Some have been exacerbated by the

COVID-19 pandemic and resulting economic consequences. Mental Health, Substance

required to adapt to the online learning method to ensure it is carried out as usual even

though they have difficulties in various ways. Some of them face depression and

anxiety. This paper reviews the psychological impact on students’ online learning

during Covid-19 in Malaysia. Past studies determined students are affected

psychologically and show symptoms of depression and anxiety. Nevertheless, many

studies presented opposite results. This review suggests the government sector take

initiative in helping students with low access to the internet and gadgets which are the

main requirement to be able to participate in online classes, and concurrently increase

the engagement of students in virtual learning, especially during this critical pandemic.

According to Acob, Arifin, and Dewi (2021), COVID-19 considered a global health

crisis poses mental health problems among individuals and specifics to students. This

study aimed to determine the depression, anxiety, and stress levels among students

amidst the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines. The symptoms of disorders were

moderate to extremely severe in the study. Age, gender, marital status, and family

history of illness are significantly different with age group 20 and below, females,

singles, and families with no history of illness displaying a high level of anxiety.

Results also established an association between anxiety and the family’s monthly

income and history of illness. The higher the monthly income and no presence of It are

therefore recommended to essentially develop community-based mental health

According to Malolos, Baron, Apat, Sagsagat, Pasco, Aportadera, Tan, Gacutno-

Evardone, and Lucero-Prisno III (2021), The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)

pandemic has subjected the mental health and well-being of Filipino children to drastic

conditions. While children are more vulnerable to these detriments, there remains the

absence of unified and comprehensive strategies in mitigating the deterioration of the

mental health of Filipino children. Existing interventions focus on more general

solutions that fail to acknowledge the circumstances that a Filipino child is subjected

under. Moreover, these strategies also fail to address the multilayered issues faced by a

lower-middle-income country, such as the Philippines. As the mental well-being of

Filipino children continues to be neglected, a subsequent and enduring mental health

epidemic can only be expected for years to come. According to the National Statistics

Office (NSO), mental health illnesses rank as the third most common form of morbidity

among Filipinos. In the assessment conducted on the Philippine mental health system, a

prevalence of 16% of mental disorders among children was reported. With this

alarming number of cases, it is surprising to see how the Philippines is currently

responding to this problem. To date, there are only five government hospitals with

psychiatric facilities for children, 84 general hospitals with psychiatric units, and 46

outpatient facilities from which there are only 11 that are designated for children and

adolescents. Additionally, there are only 60 child psychiatrists practicing in the

Philippines, with the majority of them practicing in urban areas such as the National

Capital Region.

According to Rico (2021), life is unpredictable and beyond our control. No one xxviii

expected that 2020 would bring tremendous changes and impact the world's economy,

education, and lifestyle. The COVID-19 pandemic has paved the way to defining the

"new normal". That means the current situation is different from what has been

experienced or done before but is expected to become usual or typical. Learners are

expected to have a balanced activity. For that reason, there must be time for studies,

play, and relaxation. It's ideal to study hard, but it's also equally important to socialize

and be with friends. Due to the pandemic, the young stay most of the time in the house;

as result, they are deprived of the usual outdoor activities like playing ballgames,

swimming, strolling around the park, and the like which help them stay fit. Mental

health includes emotional, physical, and psychological well-being. It causes stress to

those who are outgoing. There are reported news already about suicides related to too

much pressure in their studies, Through online classes may both have positive and

negative effects and it may be tough for the students to be at home all the time; in the

contrary, the learners have built a better and stronger relationship with their siblings

and the family.

According to Send. Angara (2022), Mental health has historically been a difficult

subject to talk about in Philippine society. Many of us, no doubt, have our own stories,

personal or otherwise, of how difficult it is to seek help. In fact, in the journal Social

Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology, August 2020, analysis of many studies in the

matter confirmed that the low utilization of mental health services among Filipinos

could be attributed in part to the stigma associated with mental health issues, with

resilience and self-reliance becoming possible alternative coping strategies.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has made mental health an ever bigger issues.

The quarantine, the economic effects of the pandemic, and the anxieties brought about

by the virus’ unpredictability have had a negative effect on the mental health of many

Filipinos.

share the experiences of studying while pandemic. The effect of pandemic to the mental

health during their studies was no good, they felt depression, anxiety & struggles.

Pandemic affects a lot of ways such as their confidence. The struggles hit them so much

during pandemic, they need to learn & study in their own way which can caused

depression & anxiety.

Based on the gathered information, it affects the way they study from face to face

learning to online classes. They struggle in a lot of ways by having a problem when it

comes to confidence. Some of the students affects their academic performances due to

lack of communication through virtual study. They managed their health during the

pandemic by stayed focus on the things matter, make time management and interact

with friends or family to be happy in free time.

In addition of affecting the study during pandemic, is that the things that we do is

limited during the pandemic. It gives anxiety and depression for being alone.

Each respondent has their own way on how to learn virtually during pandemic to

survive their study. They have a similar effect on their mental health during pandemic

which is the depression & anxiety. Regardless on the effects, the student of GAS 12-

C(RWANDA) still pursue and continue their study for them to survived and to reach

their own dreams. They have a similarity which is the disappointments. They are

disappointed to themselves that causes depression and anxiety, but they find ways to

that case they will not think a lot of their problems.
