1 st Class: Group Meeting

3
Why we need group meeting?

• A chance to organize what you have done and found in the past
Presenter
several weeks. Learn how to present your idea to people

• Ideas and comments from audiences may help you to be better

Presenter
off in your research  Everyone has different points of view

• Understand and learn what other people are doing now  Every
Audience
lab member have his or her unique topic

• Learn how to give comments and ask questions

Audience

4
What we can learn from group meeting?
• From group meeting, you can learn …

How to organize your experimental data

and information from papers

How to make proper PowerPoint slides

How to present your idea concisely and

precisely to audiences

5
What do you think that a good presentation should have?
• From your past experience … a good presentation should have?

6
What lead to a good presentation?
• In a general presentation …

• However, in academic presentation, there are more to be

learned …
Here, we list some common mistakes and corresponding tips

7
Common Mistake 1: Wordy Slides
Example of a wordy slide If we add some pictures …

Tip 1
Hard to find the
key point of this 完整的句子  關鍵字
slide 文字  圖片

8
Common Mistake 2: Not well-organized
Typically, we may organize presentation in this way

流水帳式的把做過的實
驗說過一遍

A good presentation should be presented in this way

Useful tip 2: How to organize your presentation better
• Organize your slides from the viewpoint of audiences.

• Include details that are necessary, exclude those that are not
important.

• Try to make a raw outline before you start to make your slides.

• Check your slides after you finished your slides. Does the
whole story make sense?
Sometimes it would be better if you switch the order.

10
Common Mistake 3: Forget to cite references

Every figures from paper should be cited

with reference information!

Y. Deng et al., J. AM. J.C. Conboy et al., F. Albertorio et al., J. AM.

Chem. Soc., (2004) Biomacromolecules, (2003) Chem. Soc., (2007)

Useful tip 3: How to cite properly

With all informationToo lengthy
Shu-Kai Hu1, Sheng-Wen Hsiao2, Hsun-Yen 第一作者姓 期刊名稱
Mao1, Ya-Ming Chen1, Yung Chang2 and Ling + et al.
Chao1, Using crosslinkable diacetylene Simplify Hu et al., Sci. Technol. Adv.

Common Mistake 4: Words too small
• Biomimetic membrane interfacial phenomena and
engineering

Hard to be seen by audiences  Too small

Useful tip 4: Typically….
Size of words for a topic 24~32
Size of words for content 18~24
12
Some other mistakes and tips
• Sometimes, a projector may not be perfect and may cut
off boundary part of your slides
Tip  Leave some space near boundary.
• What is a good topic of a slide?
Tip  Precisely present the concept of that slide
• Use colors that are hard to be seen
Tip  Use intense color
• Use animation, but not overuse it.
• 3D image can also be made by PowerPoint

13
How to make a 3D illustration graph
• 插入圖案>右鍵>格式化圖案>立體旋轉>預設格式 轉換立體角度

• 立體格式>調整 “深度” 即可 變成立體圖型

14
2 nd Class: Individual Meeting

15
Why we need an individual meeting?

16
What you need to prepare for individual meeting?
• Prepare PowerPoint Slides – Organize your figure and data
into understandable way. (Typically, just like what you need to
do for group meeting!)
• Prepare necessary raw data or papers you used in the
slides – Sometimes teacher may need raw data or original
source from paper in discussions.
• Remember the time and place that you are going to meet
with teacher – Check your email more frequently to make sure
the right time and place.

17
The importance of experimental records
• Record all necessary conditions of a experiment immediately
 You may forget after a long time! Then the results without detail
conditions may be useless 
 Help you to rule out why there are no expected results

• All the conditions you recorded may help you to organized your
contents and slides of individual meeting faster!

18
3 nd Class: Paper Search

19
What is a scientific paper?
• In the past, you may only learn knowledge from textbooks

Well-known phenomena
that have developed for
decades

• To do research, knowledge from textbooks is important, but not

enough  Journal paper for latest research and idea!

Latest topic
that still need
to be further
studied

Types of Journal paper
