SystemAT - Handset Trace Option

Handset Trace Overview
When problems are found during network or
network-handset testing, the speed of their
resolution is critical. The additional information
from trace handsets can substantially reduce the
'time to solve' an issue by providing a diagnosis of
the underlying cause.
(such as received strength and cell information) plus higher-layer
protocol messages as exchanged between a handset and the network.
Example
Take a situation where data services work for a while and then
occasionally fail. Using a regular commercial handset the SystemAT
shows the problem is PDP context activation failure.

Trace handsets are able to provide more detailed

handset and radio environment information than
most commercial handsets. This information is
valuable as it can indicate the underlying cause of
an issue and lead to a targeted solution.

SystemAT Handset Integration

Integration of trace handsets in SystemAT is an
option. It includes both control of the trace data to
be collected and the decoding and integrated
display of the captured information in the
SystemAT Test Analyser.

Trace information is provided in addition to the

normal handset functional metrics captured by the
SystemAT (relating to voice calls, data, message
services, etc.). The additional trace information Figure shows the PS PDP Activate failure on User3 loop 4

 Protocol Message sequence charts integrated into the Test analyzer
SystemAT allows time-based navigation into the protocol trace
information for a handset from an individual failure in the results
summary display, as shown above. This avoids the need for the
operator to manually select the correct handset log and then the
corresponding time relating to the failure. In large protocol trace logs
this could otherwise take some time.
A trace handset can therefore examine the "PS PDP Activate Failure"
message.
Terminal Activity View
The terminal activity view for User 3 gives additional confirmation
that no u-plane activity took place for loop 4.
The highlighted timestamp reveals the time closest to failure. FTP
transfers for loops 3 and 5 are shown before and after this time
respectively.
Trace Control
Due to the complexity of 3rd Generation communication systems
there is potentially a large amount of trace data that could be
captured. SystemAT provides and easy-to-use graphical interface
with selection functionality to help the user navigate and select the

the SystemAT TTCN-3 Test script interface.
Trace Display and Analysis
The trace information is made available for analysis at the end of a
test session, together with all the handset behaviour data and metrics
captured by the SystemAT. To assist interpretation a message
sequence chart is used to display trace messages. A trace data search
facility is also supported to help locate the trace information that
relates to an issue under investigation.
