Activity No. 4
Crafting the Curriculum
The needs in skills and knowledge of students change as the time passes by. Every
once in a while, an update or change in curriculum is necessary to ensure that educational
institutions continue to impart relevant and essential skills to learners. It involves a thorough
and comprehensive process which is headed by a group of people authorized by the respective
agency. Curriculum development involves the intended learning outcomes which are the
reasons for undertaking the lesson from a student’s point of view. Secondly, it consists of the
subject matter which should be appropriate for the level of the lesson. Thirdly, references
support the premises of the curriculum. Lastly, teaching and learning methods are the activities
prepared by the teacher where the learners derive experiences. It involves assessment of self,
peer assessment and teacher assessment.
Curriculum change is indeed inevitable and necessary. It is a step to stay on track and
relevant for the current trends and needs of the 21st century learners. As an ongoing process, it
must be comprehensive and systematic. People involved in this practice must be
knowledgeable and specialist in education development. And as they strive to make or revise a
curriculum, they must exercise great discernment and in-depth study of the current state and
needs of teachers and learners alike.
