Variation Parameter Method

Q1 Use a variation of parameters to find the solution of the following differential equations.

a) 𝑦" + 4𝑦′ + 4𝑦 = (𝑥 − 1)𝑒 2𝑥

b) 𝑦" + 6𝑦′ + 8𝑦 = 𝑒 −2𝑥
c) 𝑦" + 𝑦 = sec⁡ ⁡𝑥
d) 𝑦" + 4𝑦 = 5⁡sin⁡3𝑥
e) 2𝑦" + 18𝑦 = 6⁡tan⁡3𝑥
𝑒𝑥
f) 𝑦" − 3𝑦′ + 2𝑦 = 1+𝑒 𝑥

Domain, Range & 3D contour

Q1 Based on your understanding of the domain and range.

a) Determine the domain and range for 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = √(𝑥 − 1)2 + 𝑦 2 + 1

b) Generalize the contour plot of function 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) using THREE (3) level curves.
c) Sketch the surface of 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦)

Q2 Determine the domain and range of the following function:

a) 𝑧 = cos(𝑥𝑦)
b) 𝑧 = ln(𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 )
c) 𝑧 = 𝑥 2 √𝑦 + 4
d) 𝑤 = ln(9 − 𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 − 𝑧 2 )

Q3 An engineer has a task to build a silo for grain storage with height of 3 m. To give a better grain
flow, the silo is designed a cone-like geometry, where its biggest radius is on the top. The
geometry should follow the function below:
𝐻 = 2√𝑊 2 + 𝐿2 − 1
where h = height of the silo, W = half width of the roof, and L = half horizontal length of the
silo.

a) Determine the radius of each section of the silo for height interval 0.5 m.
b) Based on answer in Q3(a), interpret the 3D graph and the contour diagram of the silo,
respectively.
