SOULMAKING:

LOCAL ARTS
WHAT IS Soul making?
Soul making is a coined word that also
means imaging, imagining, art
making, or making sense of what we
do. This refers to an alternative venue
of knowing oneself better by looking
into the depths and essence of
everyday life.
As what Narciso (2016)
said, “soul making is
about drawing out a
certain experience of
the person and
transform this into an
image either in a form
of painting or a
composition or a
production.”

making
Crafting
images
01
This refers to representing an object or
experience in any form (painting,
sculpting, drawing, poetry).
02 Crafting
stories
It is when we engrave our thoughts,
ideas, emotions, and criticisms
through the form of images, words,
objects, and musical composition.
Crafting
instruments
03
This refers to producing sounds
that transcend our feelings,
emotions, and sensations in

ART
APPROPRIATION
WHAT IS ART APPROPRIATION?
It is the employment of “pre-existing
objects or images with little or no
transformation applied to them.
In doing so, it re-contextualizes
whatever it borrows to create a new
work.
types of
appropriation
Material
appropriation
01
When parts of ancient Greek temples
are removed to be brought to a
museum in the United States of
America is an example of material
appropriation.
02 Non-material
appropriation
This refers to the reproduction of non-
tangible works of art (stories,
musical composition, and
dramatic compositions) to another
culture.
Subject matter
appropriation
03
When a cultural subject is represented
in another artwork or the subject is
used in another artwork. A
Bukidnon tribal motif for example,
when used in another context.
04 Object
appropriation
Things, people, everything you see in an art
work. Example is when another artist use
a TV advertisement by making a bit
change on any of the objects you see in
the said advertisement.
Form/Style
appropriation
05
Many artists make appropriation
stylistically using a little bit of the
original artwork like the colors,
textures, visual qualities, into their
own appropriations.
06 Motif
appropriation
When this motif is reproduced in another
artwork by another artist, it is called a
motif appropriation. It is least
controversial of all forms of appropriation.
