Exercise
1. An input signal to an upsampler which increases sampling
rate by a factor 4 is 𝑥 𝑡 = 2 sin 2𝜋50 𝑡 . Let the
sampling rate of the signal is 500 samples per seconds. To
avoid spectral images at output , what is the cut-off
frequency of the filter?
Solution:
𝑓𝑠
The cut-off frequency of the filter is, 𝑓𝑐 =
2𝐿
Given, 𝑓𝑠 = 500 samples per sec, L = 4
The cut-off frequency is 𝑓𝑐 = 62.5 𝐻𝑧

Summary
• Upsampling is a digital signal processing operation that
increases sampling rate by an integer factor.
• Upsampler is a linear time varying system.
• Information is not lost in upsampling.
• Upsampler introduces spectral images at the output.
• The spectral images are removed by cascading an anti-imaging
filter after the upsampler.

Test Your Understanding
1. Prove that upsampler is a linear time invariant system.
2. If 𝑥 𝑛 = {1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34} is the input to an upsampler
shown in figure below. What is the output 𝑦[𝑛]?
