Question 1: (1.0 mark)

A velocity selector is an instrument that allows all particles to move with
the same velocity across it. Inside the velocity selector, a uniform electric field
is directed to the right (in the plane of the page) and a uniform magnetic field
is applied in the direction perpendicular to the electric field (Figure 1).
a) Explain how the velocity selector works.
b) If the a 5.00-kV/m electric field and a 2.00103-T magnetic field are
applied to the velocity selector, calculate the speed of a proton moving
through it. Figure 1

Question 2: (1.0 mark) A solid sphere of radius 40.0 cm has a total positive charge of 30.0 mC
uniformly distributed throughout its volume. Calculate the magnitude of the electric field at
a point at a distance d from the sphere’s center in following cases:
a) d = 10.0 cm,
b) d = 50.0 cm.

Question 3: (1.0 mark) A metal ring is held stationary while a magnet

bar falls down through the ring (Figure 2).
a) What is the direction of induced current occurring in the ring
when the magnet bar goes into and out of the ring?
b) Assume that at an instance, the magnetic flux through the ring
increases by 0.500 mWb in 2.00 ms. What is the magnitude of Figure 2
the induced electromotive force in the ring?

Question 4: (1.0 mark) Light of wavelength 540 nm passes through a slit of width 0.200 mm.
a) The width of the central maximum on a screen is 8.00 mm. How far is the screen from
the slit? Diffraction – single slit: grating:

; d grating constant 600 lines / mm

d = 1 mm / 600
b) Determine the width of the second bright fringe to the side of the central maximum.

Question 5: (2.0 marks) Two charged particles are fixed at the
vertices of a equilateral triangle as shown in Figure 3. Given: Q =
8.00 nC and d = 30 cm.
a) Determine the direction and the magnitude of the electric field
at the vertex C of the triangle.
Figure 3
b) Another ̶ 3.00-nC charge is now added to C.
Determine the magnitude of the electric force that acts on this
charge.
c) Calculate the potential energy of this charge system of three
charged particles.
Question 6: (2.0 marks) A conductor consists of a semi-circular
loop of radius R = 20.0 cm and two long, straight sections as shown
in Figure 4. The wire lies in the plane of the paper and carries a
current I = 2.00 A. Find the magnetic field at the center of the semi
circle. 1

Question 7: (2.0 marks) A lens made of glass (ng = 1.52) is
coated with a thin film of MgF2 (ns = 1.38) of thickness t.
Visible light is incident normally on the coated lens as in
Figure 5.
a) For what minimum value of t will the reflected light 1
(in air) of wavelength 540 nm be strongest? 1.38 1.52
b) For what minimum value of t will the reflected light
(in air) of wavelength 540 nm be strongest and the
reflected light of wavelength 480 nm be missing?
