POSING BAG

Make sure your posing bag is nice and firm but still allows
for a well in the middle.

Layer your posing bag with multiple blankets. This will reduce
the appearance of the supports that you position underneath
the baby to keep them nice and secure.

PL ACEMENT & SUPPORTS

Place the baby gently, on their back, in the well of your posing
bag or prop.

When using props, position the middle of the baby’s back is

in the centre of the prop, so they are nice and centred.

Ensure that the baby is properly supported to avoid them

from startling.

PL ACEMENT & SUPPORTS

Place supports under the baby’s head and shoulders to elevate

the top half of the baby. This will make it easier when shooting
from above.

Gently turn the baby’s face towards the ceiling, so when

shooting from above, you can see their entire face.

Placing a support under the top of the baby’s head will bring
the chin gently toward the chest if need be.

PL ACEMENT & SUPPORTS

Turn the baby’s hips gently to the side towards the light, so
they’re not flat on their back.

Placing a support under the bottom will help curl them up.

Arrange the hands so they appear soft and comfortable.

Use different wrapping techniques to help keep them nice

LIGHT & CAMER A ANGLE

Position your light source closest to the baby’s head.

Your light should be elevated and on a 45-degree angle to

the baby.

The baby’s head should be closest to the lens.

Shoot from a slightly elevated position to avoid shooting up

the nose.

Capture different angles – from above, close-up & backlit.

With every session always be prepared to work with the baby and
what they’re comfortable with. Never force them into a pose.

And remember the safety of a baby is the most important aspect of

your session. Parents will also feel more comfortable throughout
the session, knowing that their baby is in safe hands.

When photographing newborns, it doesn’t have to be complicated.

The simplest of images are often the most beautiful and treasured.

We must remember that it is a privilege to be asked to photograph

these little bundles. I believe that more often than not, we get caught
up in getting ‘the’ shot, and can forget the real reason we are hired
– which is to document every little detail of these babies and this
incredible time in our clients’ lives so that it can be remembered
forever.
