 BURPING ALSO KNOWN AS
BELCHING

 IT’S THE BODY'S WAY OF

EXPELLING EXCESS AIR FROM THE
UPPER DIGESTIVE TRACT

BABY
ways babies get gas in their stomachs
• Swallowing air- This happens when the baby eats too fast: either
the milk rushes through the bottle or the baby is hungry and
swallows very fast. Babies also tend to swallow more air if a
breastfeeding mother has a lot of milk.

• Digestion- The food that mother eats is passed into her breast
milk, so baby essentially “consumes” this same food. Bacteria in
the baby’s intestine turns some food into gas, which then passes
out through the baby’s mouth or rear end. Formula feeding tends
to cause more gas and digestive upset for most babies

• Allergic reactions or food intolerance- If breastfeeding, the baby

may also have a sensitivity to some of the food he/she eat and
feel belly pain as a result.

• Hold your baby sitting up, in
your lap or across your
knee. Support your baby's
chest and head with one hand
by cradling your baby's chin in
the palm of your hand. Rest
the heel of your hand on your
baby's chest, but be careful to
grip your baby's chin, not the
throat. Use the other hand to
pat your baby's back.
