III. Read the passage and choose the correct answer from A, B, C

A few years ago, many people thought that computers and the Internet would
replace books. Now, however, most experts think that books are here to stay.
There are a lot of reasons why computers won’t replace books completely. One
reason is that books on paper are much cheaper than computers. Books don’t need a
power source, either. You can read a book for as long as you want and wherever you
want. You never have to worry about losing power. Also, many people feel more
comfortable reading words in a book than reading words on a computer screen. It’s
less tiring to the eyes.
Will books in the future be similar to the books you can buy today? The answer to
that question is no. In the future, you may only need to buy one book. With this one
book, you will be able to read novels, plays, and even today’s newspapers. It will
look like today’s books, but it will be electronic.

1. According to many people a few years ago, what would replace books?
A. Computers and the Internet.
B. Computers.
C. The Internet.
2. Who thinks that books stay unreplaced?
A. Teachers.

C. Experts.
3. Why do many people feel more comfortable reading words in a book than reading
words on a computer screen?
A. Because it is less tiring to the eyes.
B. Because it is more tiring to the eyes.
C. Because it takes less time.
4. What are the reasons why computers won’t replace books completely?
A. Books on paper are much cheaper than computers.
B. Books don’t need a power source.
C. Books on paper are much cheaper than computers and they don’t need a
power source.
5. What will the book in the future look like?

Intelligence pills

Some scientists have predicted that healthy adults and children may one day take
drugs to improve their intelligence and intellectual performance. A research group
has suggested that such drugs might become as common as coffee or tea within the
next couple of decades.
To counter this, students taking exams might have to take drugs tests like athletes.
There are already drugs that are known to improve mental performance, like Ritalin,
which is given to children with problems concentrating. A drug given to people
with trouble sleeping also helps people remember numbers.
These drugs raise serious legal and moral questions, but people already take
vitamins to help them remember things better, so it will not be a simple problem to
solve. It will probably be very difficult to decide at what point a food supplement
becomes an unfair drug in an examination.

Liverpool City Council wants to clear the city of fat pigeons. They say that people
are feeding the birds, which makes them fat. The pigeons get bigger because their
normal diet would consist of seeds and insects, not high-fat junk food they are
eating in the city centre.
The council wants people to know that everyone who feeds the pigeons is
responsible for the streets being so crowded with these birds. They hope to
encourage the birds to move away from the city centre and into parks and open
spaces.
Ten robotic birds have been brought into the city centre to scare the pigeons away
and visitors are asked not to give the pigeons any food. The mechanical birds -
known as 'robots' - will sit on the roofs of buildings. They can be moved around to
different locations. They look like a peregrine falcon, which is a bird that kills
pigeons. They even make noises and flap their wings to scare the pigeons. They
hope that the pigeons will go away before the city becomes the European Capital of
Culture in two years.

Mountain Gorillas

What would you do if you saw a mountain gorilla? Most people would probably be
very afraid and run away! That’s because gorillas have a very frightening
appearance. Firstly, gorillas are huge. They can grow up to 2 meters tall and can
weigh more than 200 kilograms (male gorillas weigh twice as much as female
gorillas). Secondly, gorillas can make a lot of noise. They can roar, bang their
chests, and show their teeth. In fact, these aggressive displays are very rare and male
gorillas only do it when they are protecting their families.
The truth is gorillas are incredibly intelligent, gentle, and social animals that stay
together in small family groups. The leader is the largest male, called the silverback.
That’s because of the beautiful silver fur on its back. They spend almost all of their
time on the forest floor, eating and sleeping. They are mainly vegetarian, although
they eat some insects. Young gorillas often play together. They run around and climb
trees. At night, the animals make a nest to sleep in. The lighter gorillas nest in trees.
The heavier gorillas make nests on the ground and the babies sleep with their
mothers. Gorillas rarely attack humans. They only fight when something or someone
attacks them or their young. In that situation, they will fight to the death. Hunters
looking for baby gorillas may have to kill a whole family to get what they want.

B. They weigh twice as much as humans.
C. They make a lot of noise.
2. Gorillas are usually aggressive when ……………..
A. they are protecting other gorillas.
B. they are protecting their families.
C. they show their teeth.

III. Read the passage and choose the correct answer from A, B, C

Shakespeare was born in 1564, in Stratford-upon-Avon, a town in England. At the

age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway. They had a daughter, Susanna, and twins-
Hamlet and Judith. At some point, Shakespeare left Stratford for London, to work in
the theatre. Shakespeare wrote about two plays a year while living in London. He
never published the plays, but he saw them performed at the Globe and other
London theatres.
Shakespeare’s plays were well liked by audiences. But we know little about his life
in London. Shakespeare was a great story-teller. His plays entertained audiences.
Most people of his time considered his plays popular entertainments, much as we
think of the films today.
Shakespeare created a variety of true-to-life characters in his plays. The richness of
his language is amazing. He even invented many words and phrases that are now
common. He died in 1616.

1. When was Shakespeare born?

A. In the 14th century.

Do you have a phobia?
If you have a phobia, don’t worry. You’re not alone. It’s estimated that about 10%
of the world’s population have a phobia about something. The fear of flying, the
fear of heights, the fear of being in closed spaces or being in open spaces are some
of the most common phobias people have. Can you believe that some people are
afraid of fish and that others are scared of garlic? Then there’s the fear of falling in
love, the fear of rain, the fear of the moon, and the fear of the stars! The list is
endless.
So if you have a phobia, what can you do about it? In some cases, you can simply
avoid the situation. If you have a fear of heights, don’t climb a mountain! However,
in other cases, it’s not so easy. What can you do if you’re terrified of vegetables?
Some people try relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation. Some find that
physical exercise can help. Others change their diet and stop having alcohol, coffee,
and other unhealthy things. Many people find writing about their phobia helps them
understand what is happening to them. But if none of these ideas help you, go and
see your doctor. He or she may suggest psychotherapy, or even hypnosis.

FISHING
If you drive north from Toronto for three hours, you come to Lake Nipissing. In
winter, the lake becomes ice, and thousands of Canadian fishermen travel there each
weekend. They build little houses of wood on the ice and paint them in bright
colours. Then they sit inside to catch the fish that swim under the ice.
Bob Marvisch has come here at this time of year for twenty-five years. 'You need
clothes that are light but warm: two pairs of socks and gloves, several thin sweaters
and a snow suit on top. Catching the fish is easy,' he says. 'First you break the ice
and make a small round hole in it. Next you take a fishing line and put some bread
on it. Then you put the line through the hole and into the water. You pull the line up
when the fish eat the bread. They are between ten and twenty centimetres long.
Some people like to eat them, but when I have caught three or four fish, I prefer to

Bill Bryson
I was born in the United States but I have written several travel books about
England. I lived there with my wife and four children for 20 years, but for the last
three years we have lived in the United States. Our children are now learning about
life in the United States. I'm sure they will be happier because they have lived in
two countries. I like Britain and I want to return, but my daughter, Felicity, is going
to start college here soon, so it won't be for another four years.
I have just been to England for six weeks to work on a radio programme about the
English Language and also to talk about the book I've just written. Most writers
don't like doing this; they don't like travelling around the country, selling their book.
I don't mind it. I like visiting new places and meeting lots of people. It's very
different from the life I have in the United States when I'm writing. In England,
people drove me around in big cars and I stayed in expensive hotels. It was good
because I didn't have to pay any bills. Everyone was kind to me and it was fun.
