Xiao may have the appearance of a young man, but his true age is something over two
thousand years. In the game, he is presented as one of the "Yaksha"
Xiao's Story:
He is an adeptus and the only remaining member of the Five foremost Yakshas
dispatched by Morax to subdue the demonic spirits that plagued Liyue. He currently
resides in Wangshu Inn, where he secludes himself from crowds and human interactions.
The Yakshas were the guardians of Morax (God of contracts) for years without measure,
and the evils they conquered were incalculable. Morax summoned Yakshas to him to
purge the demons. They were lighted beasts of terrible appearance and raging temper,
and they spared no brutality in their duty to defend, Yet, however powerful they were,
beyond the torment that beyond all who face war, the yakshas were not, and were
distressed. Some were given over to their anger, others to the madness that fear created.
Many turned to the killing on their own, others were bewitched by the shadows of the
soul. After a millennium, fate presented itself to them, and it was like this: three of the five
died, the fourth disappeared, and all the myriad shared the fate of the three or the fourth.
Only the fifth prevailed, and the fifth was Alatus, better known as Xiao.
Xiao is not this yaksha's true name, but a name given to him in the interests of his own
protection.
Back in a younger, more naive time, a god had gotten a hold of Xiao's weakness and
forced him to serve as their bloodhound, in which capacity he was forced to perform cruel
and violent acts.
Many died at his hand, many hopes were crushed, and he was even forced into
devouring his victims' dreams. As much as it pained him to do this, he was helpless to
resist.
Finally, on the battlefield of the Archon War, Morax, the Geo Archon, had a fateful
encounter with the yaksha's master.
The current state of the world has already revealed the results of that battle.
Rex Lapis liberated the yaksha and gave him the name "Xiao."
To pay his debt of gratitude to Archon Geo, Xiao assumed the burden of protecting Liyue
for the millennia that followed. His past service under the god barely freed Xiao from his
innocence and kindness. All that remained within him was the way to kill and the weight
of his sins.
But what could people do for him in return? No one ever stopped to ask that question.
Xiao's sight, even from a distance, was intimidating enough to make people instantly run
for their lives. If someone wanted to show some appreciation for Xiao, maybe there's
something they could do.
There is a certain secret agent of the Qixing who is in charge of supporting Xiao in his
fight against the evil forces. This secret agent runs a hostel called Wangshu Inn,
Occasionally Xiao stops at the inn for a bowl of Almond Tofu and if you could see his
expression when he's eating... There's no mistaking it.
In fact, Xiao doesn't mind the sweet taste. It's a texture he finds irresistible - apparently,
it's very similar to the dreams he used to devour.
He is not a popular deity for whom people pray for wealth and protection, nor is he a
mystic sage from the Jueyun Karst, for whom pilgrims gather in search of divine wisdom.
"What exactly is Xiao fighting?" Metaphorically speaking, the answer is: old grievances,
unfulfilled dreams, woes of the lost. In reality, however, Xiao is fighting the remnants of
the defeated Archons in the War of the Archons, prior to the current system of rule by the
Seven. They were defeated and sealed by Morax. However, Archons are immortal. Your
consciousness may diminish, but your powers and hatred still hold a lot of influence over
this world and its inhabitants, causing chaos in teyvat.
