The Splendor of Agusan: Agusan Marsh, a Sanctuary of Life

By: Cedrick C. Maglinte

Agusan Marsh, residing at the heart of the province of Agusan del Sur is not just a
sanctuary or biodiversity and wildlife, but also a testament of to the ever-changing culture,
belief, practices and even ways of life of those who reside the place. As I immersed myself to the
spectacular documentary created by Jerrold Tarog entitled “Agusan Marsh Diaries,” I am truly
engross by the way of living of the tribe itself.
Agusan Marsh is a hidden treasure that perfectly captures the variety and wealth of
our natural heritage. It serves as a refuge for various plant and animal species, some of which are
unique to this region. For migrating birds, the marsh is an essential habitat since it offers them a
place to be safe while traveling great distances. It serves as a sanctuary for endemic species like
the Philippine crocodile and the Mindanao hornbill, iconic animals that represent the distinctive
biodiversity of our beloved nation. In addition to being a beautiful natural setting, Agusan Marsh
serves as a tangible example of the value of conservation and sustainable development. The
marsh serves as a symbol of optimism and resiliency in a world when ecosystems are coming
under more and more pressure. It serves as a reminder that it is our duty to safeguard and
conserve nature for future generations.
The indigenous peoples who are also known as “Manobo Tribe,” have inhabited
Agusan Marsh for generations have developed a profound relationship with the land and its
resources. Their traditions, customs, and practices are intricately entwined with the marsh's
cyclical natural rhythms. However, over time, changes in their way of life have been brought
about by outside influences and socioeconomic changes.
The documentary is 11 years old as of this date. There might be significant changes that
might affected the way of life and living of the tribes within the marsh. As I looked more closely
at the theories that could have influenced and caused these changes, I came to the conclusion that
globalization may have had the greatest impact on the Agusan Mash. The towns near Agusan
Marsh have been exposed to new concepts, technologies, and ways of life as a result of how
linked today's globe is. Global market penetration, a rush of fresh information via media and
technology, and greater mobility have opened doors for cultural adaptation and exchange.
The alteration of beliefs, customs, and traditions has also been greatly aided by education
and access to information. The region's younger generations have been exposed to various ideas,
values, and viewpoints as a result of the development of formal education systems. Due to this
exposure, traditional and modern knowledge have come together, resulting in a vibrant cultural
environment that embraces both the old and the new.
To sum up, I am motivated by the communities' capacity to change and advance while
clinging to the core of their unique cultural identities. It is evidence of the ability of the human
spirit to develop and be resilient in the face of change. It serves as a reminder that culture is a
living, breathing thing that changes and flourishes in reaction to the environment.
