ELECTRICAL POWER GENERATION SYSTEMS

Course Objectives
 To impart knowledge on operation of thermal, nuclear, hydel and gas power
generating stations.
 To familiarize with the principles of solar and wind power generation.
 .
Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to
 describe various electric heating methods.
 identify a suitable welding method for a given application
 design illumination systems for residential, commercial andindustrial
environments.
 analyze various speed time curves of electric traction.
 determine the tractive effort, power and specific energyconsumption of
electric traction.
Course Content:
UNIT - I: Circuit Breakers
Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) - Elementary principles of arc interruption,
Restriking Voltage and Recovery voltages, Average and Max. RRRV, Current
Chopping and Resistance Switching, Description and Operation of Minimum Oil
Circuit breakers, Air Blast Circuit Breakers, Vacuum and SF6 circuit breakers,
CB ratings and Specifications, Concept of Auto reclosing.

UNIT - II: Protective Relays


Electromagnetic relays:
Fundamentals of Relays, Principle of Operation and Construction of
electromagnetic attraction and induction type relays. PSM, TMS. Characteristics
of over current relays, Differential Relays and Percentage Differential Relays.
Universal torque equation, Distance relays: Impedance, Reactance and Mho
relays, Characteristics of Distance Relays and Comparison, Direction relays.
Static relays: block diagram of basic static relay –static over-current, static
directional, static distance and static differential relays, Static relays verses
Electromagnetic Relays.

UNIT - III: Protection of Generator, Transformer & Bus Bar


Generator Protection:
Protection of generators against Stator faults, Rotor faults, and Abnormal
Conditions. Restricted Earth fault and Inter-turn fault Protection, calculation of
Percentage Winding Unprotected.
Transformer Protection:
ElectricalandElectronicsEngineering
Percentage Differential Protection, Design of CTs Ratio, Percentage Differential
Relay with Harmonic Restraint, Buchholtz relay Protection.
Bus bar Protection: Differential Protection of Bus bar.
UNIT - IV: Electric Traction – I
Systems of electric traction and track electrification-Review of existing electric
traction systems in India, Special features of traction motor, Mechanics of train
movement, Speed-time curves for different services, trapezoidal and
quadrilateral speed time curves.
UNIT - V: Electric Traction – II
Calculations of tractive effort, power, specific energy consumption for given run,
effect of varying acceleration and braking retardation, adhesive weight and
braking retardation adhesive weight and coefficient of adhesion.
