WHAT IS SAT EXAM?

SAT full form - Scholastic Assessment Test

SAT Exam in Nepal is one of the most popular and globally

accepted assessment tests for students aspiring to pursue
undergraduate courses abroad. Since its inception, the SAT Exam
has been administered and conducted by the College Board. Earlier,
the SAT Exam was known as the Scholastic Aptitude Test, which
was later changed to the Scholastic Assessment Test to assess and
evaluate the verbal, written, and mathematical skills of students/
candidates aspiring to begin their study abroad journey. The
countries such as the USA, UK and Canada give weightage to the
SAT Score, and it is one of the requirements for enrolling in
universities or higher education institutions.

SAT Exam in Nepal is being conducted in two modes, i.e., SAT

Reasoning and SAT Subject test. If you want to enrol in a particular
course, you can take up the SAT subject tests to prove your in-depth
understanding and knowledge of that specific subject.

The Two Types of SAT Exam in Nepal

1. SAT Reasoning Test
2. SAT Subject Test

SAT Reasoning Test and SAT Exam Format

The duration of the SAT Reasoning Test is 3 hours and 45 minutes,
which evaluates your skills in 3 major areas: Math, Critical Reading
and Writing.
The SAT reading segment comprises reading sentences and
passages.
The SAT writing segment includes multiple-choice questions
and a short essay.
The SAT math segment comprises questions on probability and
statistics, arithmetic operations, geometry and algebra.

Despite most questions being multiple choices; candidates are also

asked to draft an essay to evaluate their writing and language skills.
The SAT Exam format also evaluates students’ critical thinking skills
to determine their ability to manage and survive in an overseas
institution.

The SAT Reasoning Test is ideally taken by students who have

completed their schooling and are looking to pursue an
undergraduate course overseas. One of the pros of taking up the
SAT exam in Nepal is that it projects the skills and knowledge you
have attained all these years in your schooling, including solving
issues, thinking, and effectively communicating with fellow mates.

Universities and institutions consider SAT exam scores to choose the

students who will best fit their respective institutions. Candidates
taking up the SAT Exam can score between 200 and 800 marks for
each section.

SAT Reasoning Exam Format

The SAT Exam comprises 10 sections.

The first section is essay writing, where candidates are given 25
minutes, and the last section is multiple-choice questions with a
time duration of 10 minutes.
Section 2 to 7 is selection based questions for 25 minutes.
Section 8 and 9 are short question types with a timeframe
of 20 minutes.

SAT Subject Test and SAT Exam Format

The SAT Exam format of the subject test is to answer multiple-

choice questions around a specific subject, and the duration of the
exam lasts for an hour. Students who want to enrol in a course, i.e.,
w.r.t a particular subject, can take up the SAT Subject Test to
demonstrate their mastery to overseas institutions (History, English,
Science, Mathematics and Languages).

Most higher education institutions in the USA consider the SAT

Subject Tests scores for admission, placement, and guiding
international students on their course selection. Along with the SAT
Subject Score, institutions perform background verification on
candidates’ school records, recommendations from the school, and
a few other test results like SAT Reasoning. Based on students' SAT
Scores and academic achievement, institutions predict which
student will best fit the particular course.

Note - Subject tests are offered in History, Literature, Sciences,

Mathematics, Foreign Languages, and a few other areas.

SAT EXAM PREPARATION TIPS
Candidates are expected to prepare aptly by following the
preparation guidelines provided by the College Board to score well
in a SAT Exam. The following are the section-wise SAT Exam
Preparation tips that will help you score a high score.

SAT Exam Preparation for Reading Section:

Scan through the passages. Do not wholly read each passage or

reread any of the passages. Since you will be asked to answer in
65 minutes for 5 passages, the chances are high that you might
miss out on answering for a couple of passages while rereading
them.

Pick critical points of the passages to help you understand and

quickly point out where the answers are placed for each
question of a passage.

Questions are not hierarchically placed in terms of difficulty.

Hence, try answering questions you are sure of first and then
focus on questions that require some time to analyse. This
process will help you plan your time better.

Try solving as many practise papers as possible at your SAT

Exam Coaching Centre. It will help you understand the types of
passages given and questions asked in the SAT Exam.

There is no negative mark in the SAT exam format. Hence, you

are free to answer all questions. Even when you are unsure of
answers, you can pick an answer to help boost your score.
SAT Exam Preparation Tips for Writing Section:

Similar to the reading section, pay attention while scanning

through the passages to answer as many questions as possible.

Spend ample time on checking the Grammar; focus on

punctuations, spellings and sentence structure. Most marks in
the writing section will fall under the Grammar category.

Practise idioms, homophones, clauses and tenses.

Get used to answering many practice papers at your SAT Exam

coaching centre. This process will help your instructors find
where you need help and to train you accordingly.

Try practising to keep up some extra time at the end of the

writing test. It will help you analyse and recheck your answers
for any spelling errors.

SAT Exam Preparation Tips for Math Section:

Be familiar with trigonometric, algebra and geometric formulae

as they will help you solve multiple-choice questions in both
calculator and non-calculator sections.

Prepare and practice in such a way so you can solve small

calculations mentally. This will help save time in the non-
calculator section. Even in the calculator section, mental
calculations act as a catalyst to quickly complete the steps and
help save time to recheck the answers.
Practice enough to get accurate answers at the coaching centre
to crack the Grid-in questions and recheck your answers while
marking them on the OMR Sheet.

SAT Exam Preparation Tips for Essay Section:

Practice reading many essays to understand authors’ arguments

and their use of reasoning, evidence and persuasive techniques
to claim their statement from the passage.

Organise your ideas in the essay sequentially to avoid getting

muddled. Try connecting each paragraph of your essay to the
previous ones to construct better flow and readability.

Pay attention to sentence structure and grammar. Practice

writing essays with more straightforward sentences and
communicate messages on-point to grab the reader’s attention.

Consider using rich vocabulary while practising the essay

section. Your vocabulary depicts your strength and grasp of the
English language. In order to enrich your vocabulary, you can
take help from your SAT exam coaching centre’s instructor and
also by reading articles.

You can ace the SAT Exam by successfully understanding the

format and taking help from your SAT Coaching Centre.

A. SAT Reading Section

The SAT Reading section comprises 52 multi-choice questions with

a duration of 65 minutes. All 52 questions are derived from 5
evidence-based passages, and students/candidates are asked to
analyse the information in the given passages before answering the
questions. Each passage could be 500-700 words in length.

Passages’ format could be either in paragraphs or coupled with

charts, tables and infographics. The passages are generally drawn
from literature, social science, economics, psychology, sociology
and history.
All the questions asked in the SAT Reading section fall under
3 categories:

Factual questions are derived from the core context of the

passage.
Rhetoric questions are formulated to evaluate the grasp of tone
and style conveyed in the passage.
Synthesis questions are based on drawing a conclusion or
connecting the plots between charts, passages and infographics.

SAT Format - Reading Passage Structure

All passages in the reading section are followed by 10-11 questions

with 4 multi-choice answers.

A. SAT Writing and Language

The SAT writing section comprises 44 multi-choice questions based

on 4 passages and is 35 minutes in duration. When it comes to the
SAT Writing section, the focus is to evaluate students’ or candidates’
ability to analyse and edit a piece of content given in the passage.
Ideally, students should edit the passage, spot and rectify errors,
sharpen the sentences, and correct any misinterpretation in the
graphical content.

Graphs, charts and infographics accompany a few passages in the

writing sections. Each passage could be closely associated to:

Science Humanities
Career Social Studies
History
The multiple-choice questions asked in the SAT writing section can
be Standard English questions where you need to correct
punctuation, grammatical errors and improvise the written structure
of the idea depicted in the passage.

SAT - Mathematics Section

The SAT Mathematics section comprises 58 questions in 80 minutes,

where over 75% are multiple-choice types. The other 25% of
questions are response types where the students must solve
problems, come up with answers, and shade the appropriate
numbers (grid-ins). When compared to other sections of the SAT
Exam, the Math section is specially designed to assess candidates’
knowledge in math concepts and the ability to apply those to solve
real-time problems.

Since students need to solve complex mathematical problems, the

SAT Math section is categorised into two types: with a calculator and
without a calculator. The below table depicts the timeframe and
number of questions to be answered with and without a calculator.

Time Allotted 80 minutes

Calculator Portion (38 questions) 55 minutes

evaluating skills. In this section, students are given 50 minutes to
skim through 600 to 700 words of passage to understand how the
author effectively built the argument.

Though students are not asked to write an essay, they are expected
to understand the evidence that supports the author’s argument and
persuasively explain the evidence in written format.

How are SAT scores calculated?

Candidates receiving the SAT score is the sum of your reading,

writing and math scores. The essay section score is calculated
separately. To calculate the section-wise score, the SAT Scoring
Team collects the data of raw scores, i.e.) the number of correct
answers in each section, and convert them to a scaled score of 200
to 800.
What is Percentile in the SAT Score?

Candidates’ percentile rank in the SAT exam scores represents the

percentage of students/candidates whose SAT score is either equal
or lower than their score. For instance, if a student’s SAT score is
80th percentile, 80% of the students who took the SAT exam have
achieved that score range or below.
