Risk of burn injuries caused by high illumination intensity

General
The xenon illumination is a light source with high intensity. If used improperly,
excessive illumination intensities may lead to third-degree burns. Keep the
illuminated tissue moist and make sure it is sufficiently rinsed. Carefully
monitor the effect of the illumination on the tissue, particularly under the
following circumstances:
– During longer interventions on skin and tissue using objective lenses with
short focal depth (short working distance),
– During interventions on poorly perfused tissue,
– When the brightness control for the xenon lamp is set to a high
illumination intensity. Please bear in mind that the values displayed for the
light intensity may not be used as a measuring function. They are intended
only as guide values.
• Only change the xenon lamp module after switching off the system.
The igniter generates a high voltage when the lamp is on.
• Any type of radiation has a damaging effect on biological tissue. This is
also true for the light illumination the surgical field. You should therefore
reduce brightness, the illuminated field size and the light exposure time to
the absolute minimum required.
In the event of malfunctions, if the brightness can no longer be reduced,
you must take this into account in the duration of illumination.

Various factors influence the risk of burn injuries:

System-related factors
– The wavelength range is limited by filters to the visible range between
400 nm and 700 nm in order to reduce the risk of burn injuries.
– The illumination intensity decreases with increasing number of operating
hours of the light source. In case of a lamp exchange, illumination
increases to the originally high value.

Version 13.0
G-30-1434-en Page 17
Safety measures S7 / OPMI Sensera

Surgery-related factors
– The selected intensity of the light source is a major factor for the risk of
injury. It should always be set to the minimum required for the surgical
procedure to be performed.
– The size of the luminous field influences the risk of injury in two respects:
– With a large illuminated-field diameter, areas of the skin are
illuminated which are not monitored as strictly by the surgeon and
which are not moistened sufficiently. These areas are particularly
exposed to the risk of injury. Such injuries can be prevented by
adjusting the luminous field size to the smallest size required for that
particular operation.
– If the luminous field is reduced in size, the intensity increases because
the light is more strongly focused. So, if possible, the intensity should
be lowered as soon as the size of the luminous field is reduced.
– A long surgical procedure increases the risk of injury, in particular if
a standard procedure takes considerably longer than usual.
– Injuries in the peripheral area can be prevented by covering this area with
wet, sterile gauze. The risk is increased if dry drapes are used to cover such
areas.
– The interaction of heat and antimicrobial substances in incision foils may
lead to an increase in the patient's reaction to these substances.
– It should also be considered that some areas of the body may be more
sensitive than others.
– Certain preparations of the surgical field, local vasoconstrictive
medications and incision drapes may also result in a higher risk of injury.
Patient-related factors
– The general condition of a patient's health may contribute to the risk of
injury.
– The skin type may also play a major role for the risk of injury.
– Certain medications also affect the sensitivity to light.

Recommendations
Due to the large number of different factors involved and the lack of scientific
publications on this topic, ZEISS cannot provide guidance on acceptable
illumination intensities and exposure durations. However, the surgical
microscope has several features that can help the user to reduce the risk of
burn injuries:

Version 13.0
Page 18 G-30-1434-en
S7 / OPMI Sensera Safety measures

– Using the buttons on the handgrip or foot control panel, the surgeon can
then set the illumination intensity to the value required for the procedure.
Please note that the intensity increases with decreasing luminous field size
if the Spot function is used. For this reason, the intensity should only be
set only after the size of the luminous field has been changed.
– Never leave a device unattended when its light source is switched on.
– - Switch off the light when the microscope is not used and make sure that
it is not aimed at unprotected bare skin.
Please note that most burns affected the skin around the incision. The most
important measures to prevent burns are reduction of the size of the
illuminated field using the spot function and the coverage of peripheral areas
with sterile, moist gauze. The area of the incision should be constantly
moistened.

Concluding remarks
ZEISS recommends that the lighting of the surgical field be reduced as far as
possible while ensuring the safety of the patient and a good microscopic
image.
Please comply with the warnings and safety instructions in this regard.

Ceiling mount with lifting column

Lifting column

1 2 Selector switch
for setting the optimum viewing height of the surgical microscope or for
downward movement into the working position.
As long as you keep the selector switch in the turned position, the lifting
column in the stand base moves upwards (2) or downwards (1), depending
on the switch position. When you release the selector switch, the lifting
column stops immediately.
The switching technology causes a delay of approx. 2 seconds at the upper
and lower end positions of the lifting column. After this time elapses, you can
move the column in the opposite direction again by activating the selector
switch again.
With a maximum actuation time of one minute, the lifting column must be
turned off for at least nine minutes because its motor might overheat
otherwise.

– Before raising or lowering the stand, make sure that there is sufficient
clearance to other objects to prevent collisions.

CAUTION Risk of injury caused by lifting column

Activating the lifting column may cause injuries.
• Do not activate the lifting column during surgery.
• Do not use the lifting column for focusing.
• Make sure that the patient is not put at risk by the motorized adjustment
of the lifting column.

Sensera surgical microscope on S7 suspension systems

Features

The apochromatic optics of the microscope provide superb optical quality.

The microscope image displays optimal contrast and excellent detail
recognition along with outstanding depth of field and maximum 3D
perception. With the 1:6 ratio zoom system, you can adapt the magnification
of the overall system to the requirements of the surgical procedure.

Suspension systems
The S7 floor stand is a suspension system for ZEISS surgical microscopes.
It comprises a suspension arm, a carrier arm, a stand column and a stand base.
A grab handle is mounted on the stand column. It is used to move the stand
and to suspend the foot control panel. The stand column is equipped with
cable supports on the left and right for winding up cables before the unit is
relocated. The stand base is extremely easy to move on its four casters. It has
been designed in such a way that high stability is ensured even with
unfavorable loading of the stand. The locking tabs permit you to reliably
secure the floor stand in position at the site of use.
The weight may be underestimated as the suspension system can be moved
very easily. Therefore, move the stand slowly and carefully!
The S7 ceiling mount with rigid column is a suspension system for ZEISS
surgical microscopes. It comprises a suspension arm, a carrier arm, a ceiling
column and a ceiling flange.
The S7 ceiling mount with lifting column is a suspension system for ZEISS
surgical microscopes. It comprises a suspension arm, a carrier arm, a ceiling
flange and a lifting column. This motorized lifting column permits the viewing
height to be perfectly matched to the surgeon's requirements.
The carrier arm of all suspension systems contains the control unit with all
electrical supply systems required for the control of a motorized surgical
microscope. You can control the motorized functions using the handgrips, or
via a foot control panel (optional ). A light guide (fiber optic illumination)
directs the light from the lamp housing in the suspension system to the
surgical microscope.
The suspension arm of all types of suspension system permits almost effortless

positioning of the surgical microscope. The spring force of the suspension

arm can be varied in a range from 6 to 14 kg, permitting reliable balancing
of the microscope even with accessory equipment attached. The downward
movement of the suspension arm can be limited using an adjustable
positioning aid.
A control panel enables the adjustment of user-defined settings such as the
zoom, focus, brightness and video settings, and the programming of the
configurable handgrip buttons.

Options for your surgical microscope

The SpeedFokus autofocus option permits you to select features (ROI, region
of interest) in the image of the surgical field and to rapidly focus on them
automatically or at the press of a button.
The "1Chip HD camera" option provides high-resolution video equipment for
your surgical microscope.
ZEISS Service can also retrofit existing surgical microscopes with the "1Chip
HD camera" option on request.
The "TRIO 610 HD video camera" option with the TRIO 600 CCU camera
control unit is a non-medical accessory for surgical microscopes. The video
camera system can be connected to a Carl Zeiss surgical microscope by means
of the C-mount interface.ZEISS Service can also retrofit existing surgical
microscopes with the "TRIO 610 HD video camera" option on request.

As long as you keep the selector switch in the turned position, the lifting
column moves downward (3) or upward (4), depending on the switch
position. When you release the selector switch, the lifting column stops

The switching technology causes a delay of approx. 2 seconds at the
upper and lower end positions of the lifting column. After this time
elapses, you can move the column in the opposite direction again by
activating the selector switch again.
The lifting column is used to move the microscope into position for
surgery prior to the surgical procedure.Do not constantly move the lifting
column up and down, since a thermal cut-out will then automatically
deactivate the drive motor. If this occurs, the lifting column cannot be
moved until the motor has cooled down.
Note: With a maximum actuation time of one minutes, the lift column
must be turned off for at least nine minutes because the motor of the lift
column can overheat otherwise.

Illumination system

Two different types of illumination are available for the suspension system.
1 Halogen illumination
The halogen light source is equipped with an illumination system for fiber
illumination. The lamp housing contains a backup lamp which
automatically swings into position when the first lamp fails.
2 XENON illumination
The xenon light source is equipped with an illumination system for fiber
illumination. The xenon lamp generates light whose spectrum resembles
that of natural daylight. Regardless of the brightness setting, the color
temperature of the light always remains the same. Normal daylight film
without any additional conversion filters can therefore be used for
photographic documentation. The lamp module contains two xenon
lamps. The second lamp is used as a backup lamp which must be manually
swung into the illumination beam path when the first lamp fails. You have
to pull out the lamp module all the way before being able to swing in the
backup lamp.

CAUTION Risk of injury caused by xenon light in the facial area

Surgery using xenon light in the facial area may seriously harm the patient's
eyes.
• The patient's eyes must not be exposed to xenon light.
• This xenon light source must not be used in ophthalmology.

Option "SpeedFocus (Autofocus)"

The SpeedFokus autofocus option permits you to select and automatically
focus on a feature in the ROI (region of interest, measuring field) in the image
of the surgical field.
The SpeedFokus (autofocus) function is based on the analysis of the video
image contrast: during focusing of the microscope's Varioskop optics,
SpeedFokus continuously determines the video image contrast in the selected
ROI. In this way, SpeedFokus controls the microscope's Varioscope optics and
adjusts it to the point of maximum contrast. This corresponds at the same
time to the point of greatest image sharpness.
Autofocus menu
The Autofocus menu offers you the following functions for selection:
– ROI, on/off: activating / deactivating the ROI display.
– ROI Size, small/medium/large: selecting the ROI size.
– ROI Position: branching to the AF - ROI Position submenu to define the
ROI position.
– Camera Position, left/right: entering the orientation of the external video
camera.
– Advanced Settings: branching to the Advanced Settings submenu to enter
the technical data of the external video camera.
– The "Camera Position left/right" and "Advanced Settings" functions are
only offered for selection if your system is equipped with an external video
camera. If you have an integrated video camera, these fields remain blank.
– As long as you are entering any settings in the Autofocus menu or its
submenus, the ROI is displayed as a square frame in the video image on
the monitor. A few seconds after your last action, the frame disappears
from the screen.
Menu item "ROI, on/off"
The position and size of the ROI are displayed on the video monitor in
the form of a square frame. Use the "ROI on/off" function to activate or
deactivate this display on the video monitor.
Menu item "ROI Size, small/medium/large"
Permits you to select the ROI size.
Three different ROI sizes are available for selection: small (20x20 pixels),
medium (36x36 pixels) and large (50x50 pixels).
The default setting for Standard User is the large ROI. You can change the
size of the ROI, but the change cannot be saved for the Standard User.

Version 13.0
G-30-1434-en Page 109
Device overview S7 / OPMI Sensera

For specific users, the ROI size can be set and saved for each user as required.
Submenu "AF - ROI Position"
This submenu permits you to define the ROI position within the microscope's
field of view.
When you start your system, the ROI is always positioned at the center of the
field of view. The ROI is visualized as a square in the graphic display. Use the
arrow buttons to shift the ROI.
Press the OK button to return to the Autofocus menu. If you do not press any
of the buttons, the display will automatically jump back to the Surgery menu
after approx. 20 seconds.
Menu item "Camera Position":
If you are using an external video camera, the orientation of the video camera
must be known to the SpeedFokus (autofocus) function.
This function is only available in systems equipped with an external video
camera.
The video image must have the same orientation as the image in the main
eyepieces of the surgical microscope.
In addition, SpeedFokus needs the information whether the video camera is
connected on the left or right, i.e. whether the beam splitter projects into the
main beam path from the left or right, to be able to perform corrections in the
right direction during the focusing process.
Submenu "Advanced Settings"
– This submenu is only available in systems equipped with an external video
camera.
– This submenu contains camera-specific settings. These settings only need
to be changed when a different video camera is installed.
– The SpeedFokus (autofocus) option does not function properly if
parameters have not been correctly set.
The "Advanced Settings" submenu contains the following camera-specific
settings:
– Video Focal Length
– Camera Chip Size (size of the CCD array)
Video Focal Length and Camera Chip Size (size of the CCD array):
These settings must conform to the technical specifications of the video
camera used.

CAUTION Risk of tripping over cables lying on the floor!

If cables are inappropriately installed on the floor, this increases the risk of
R057
tripping and interferes with the flow of work. Users may suffer tissue trauma
from tripping and falling.
• If possible, cables should be laid only outside of the area of movement.

NOTE Comply with the rated voltage

Prior to leaving the factory, the device is set to the rated voltage of the
R017 respective country of destination. The set voltage is visible in a small window
(1) on the carrier arm. If the set voltage does not comply with the line voltage
available at the site of installation, this can cause damage to the device.
• Check the voltage setting. The set voltage must comply with the line
voltage available at the site of installation. If this is not the case, you must
not operate the system.
• If the rated voltage is not correctly set, adjust the sliding switch (5) using
a suitable tool.

CAUTION Risk of electrical shock!

Connecting the video monitor and the MEDIALINK 100 (option)

NOTE Use of video signal isolation

When video signals are led out of the OR, e.g. for a conference, this may
cause excessive leakage and contact currents.
• Use galvanic isolation for isolating the video signals.

The image quality obtained with Y/C connections and cables shorter than
10 m is always better than that obtained with BNC connections of the same
length. If cable lengths exceed 10 m, the image quality provided by a Y/C
connection will decrease markedly; in these cases, only BNC connections
should be used.
If possible, you should position the individual units in such a way that you can
use Y/C connections. The Y/C connection provides the best image quality,
in particular for images recorded with MEDIALINK 100.
If this is not possible, position the individual units in such a way that you can
use the Y/C cable at least for the video input port of MEDIALINK 100.

Remote control of MEDIALINK 100 using freely configurable buttons

The freely configurable handgrip buttons of the surgical microscope and the
freely configurable buttons (C and D) on the foot control panel allow you to
control external units.
The signal generated by the configurable buttons is present at the Remote
socket on the connector panel of the suspension system.
• To enable the remote control function, connect the Remote socket on the
connector panel of the suspension system to the Remote socket on
MEDIALINK 100.

Installing the 1Chip HD camera

Please observe the "1Chip HD camera" Instructions for Use (G-30-1946).

These Instructions for Use are included automatically in systems with the
"1Chip HD camera" option. They contain all the additional explanations for
the "1Chip HD camera" option.
The 1Chip HD camera is flanged permanently onto a beam splitter or to an iris
diaphragm for video lenses. Normally the beam splitter with the 1Chip HD
camera remains installed on the surgical microscope.
If necessary, the beam splitter with the 1Chip HD camera can be removed
from the surgical microscope.

CAUTION Risk of infection due to sagging camera cable!

If the beam splitter and the permanently connected 1Chip HD camera are
R508 removed from the surgical microscope and the remaining, non-sterile camera
cable is hanging down from the surgical microscope, the camera cable could
contaminate the sterile area with pathogens under certain circumstances.
This may cause infections.
• Make sure that the remaining camera cable is not hanging down from
the surgical microscope.

1Chip HD camera with iris diaphragm for video lenses

Normally the 1Chip HD camera is located on the right side as viewed from the
main eyepieces. The iris diaphragm for video lenses on the 1Chip HD camera
allows you to re-equip your surgical microscope quickly. The 1Chip HD camera
can be attached to and removed from the beam splitter, and therefore the
output ports of the beam splitter (left/right sides) can also be changed.
After changing sides, you will have to adjust the position of the image.
For further details please refer to the Instructions for Use of the "1Chip HD

Adjusting the system – S7 floor stand

Setting the suspension arm weight compensation

CAUTION Risk of crushing - mind your fingers!

Fingers may be crushed between the carrier and suspension arms.
• Never touch the area between the suspension and carrier arms while you
are performing the balancing procedure or moving the suspension arm.
Do not perform the balance setting until the surgical microscope and all
accessories have been mounted!
• Move the suspension arm into its horizontal position and hold it tightly
with one hand.
• Loosen knob (3) for adjusting the friction of the suspension arm's upward/
downward movement.
• Move the suspension arm slightly up and down. At the same time, turn
adjustment screw (1) until you think that the spring force is sufficient to
compensate for the weight of the surgical microscope and accessories.
Continue to perform this adjustment until the surgical microscope moves
neither upward nor downward. The surgical microscope is fully balanced
when it remains stationary in all positions within the work area.
Rotating clockwise increases the spring force. Turning the screw counter-
clockwise reduces the spring force.

Limiting the suspension arm's downward movement

CAUTION Risk of injury caused by lowering of the surgical microscope!

• Limit the stroke of the suspension arm to prevent any contact with the
patient should the surgical microscope be lowered accidentally.
• Loosen locking lever (2) for the upward/downward movement.

Version 13.0

• Lower the surgical microscope until it can be focused on the surgical field
(depending on the focal length of the objective lens). At the same time,
ensure that there is sufficient safety clearance to the surgical field.
• Firmly retighten locking lever (2) for the upward/downward movement.
• Lower the surgical microscope to its lowest position again, and check the
distance between the microscope and the surgical field.
– The limit of downward travel is only effective in the lower part of the
suspension arm's vertical movement range (starting from the arm's
horizontal position).
– If you wish to use the suspension arm's full range of vertical movement,
lower the suspension arm as far as it will go and then firmly retighten
locking lever (2).

• Always limit the stroke of the suspension arm so that any contact with
the patient will be prevented if the surgical microscope is lowered
accidentally.
• Loosen the locking lever (2) for the upward/downward movement.

Configuring the system - S7 ceiling mount with lifting

column

Set ergonomic working height

CAUTION Risk of injury caused by lifting column

Activating the lifting column may cause injuries.
• Do not activate the lifting column during surgery.
• Do not use the lifting column for focusing.
• Make sure that the patient is not put at risk by the motorized adjustment
of the lifting column.

Bring the surgical microscope into a position convenient for you before each
surgical procedure, and set the optimal ergonomic working height of the
suspension system via the lifting column (without the patient!).
As long as you keep the selector switch (2) in the turned position, the lifting
column (1) moves upward or downward, depending on the switch position.
When you release the selector switch, the lifting column stops immediately.
With a maximum actuation time of one minute, the lifting column must be
turned off for at least nine minutes because its motor might overheat
otherwise.
• Before raising or lowering the suspension system, make sure that there is
sufficient clearance from other objects so that any collision is avoided.
The lifting column is used to move the microscope into position for surgery
prior to the surgical procedure.
Do not constantly move the lifting column up and down, since a thermal cut-
out will then automatically deactivate the drive motor. If this occurs, the lifting
column cannot be moved until the motor has cooled down.

NOTE Risk of injury to the head when using ceiling mounts!

Your head may collide with the device while the device is lowered.
• Move ceiling mount to its standby position when it is not in use.

• Loosen the knob (3) for adjusting the friction of the suspension arm's
upward/downward movement.
• Move the suspension arm slightly up and down. At the same time, turn
the adjustment screw (1) until you think that the spring force is sufficient
to compensate for the weight of the surgical microscope and accessories.
Continue to perform this adjustment until the surgical microscope moves
neither upward nor downward. The surgical microscope is fully balanced
when it remains stationary in all positions within the work area.
Turn the adjustment screw clockwise to increase the spring force. Turn the
adjustment screw counter-clockwise to reduce the spring force.

Limiting the suspension arm's downward movement

CAUTION Risk of injury caused by lowering of the surgical microscope!

• Always limit the stroke of the suspension arm so that any contact with
the patient will be prevented if the surgical microscope is lowered acci-
dentally.
• Loosen the locking lever (2) for the upward/downward movement.

Balancing the surgical microscope

NOTE Risk of injury to the patient!

With an incorrectly balanced system, brake release may lead to uncontrolled
movements of the suspension arm.
• Use the surgical microscope only when it has been fully and correctly
balanced!
• Balance the surgical microscope before surgery, without the patient.
• The subsequent test must not be carried out when the system is
positioned over the patient and it must be conducted at a safe distance
from other persons and devices.
• To check that the system has been correctly balanced, unlock the brakes.
For this step, hold the surgical microscope by both handgrips. If the
system has been correctly balanced, the surgical microscope can be
moved almost effortlessly.
To permit almost effortless guidance of the surgical microscope, the
microscope and the suspension system used must be correctly balanced.
If the system is in an extremely unbalanced state, the unit can move
uncontrollably out of position. For this reason, hold the surgical microscope
tightly by its handgrips before loosening the friction adjustment knob on the
suspension arm.

Adjusting the friction of the microscope's axis of rotation

• Use the rotary knob (1) to adjust the friction of the microscope's axis of
rotation.

Setting the lateral tilt motion for correct balancing

• Loosen the friction adjustment knob (3).
• Use knob (2) to adjust the spring force so that that the surgical microscope
is balanced about its lateral tilt axis and remains stationary in the desired
viewing direction.
– If the surgical microscope tends to move clockwise, turn knob (2)
counterclockwise.
– If the surgical microscope tends to move counterclockwise, turn knob
(2) clockwise.

Balancing the front-to-back tilt motion

NOTE Risk of injury to the patient!

With an incorrectly balanced system, brake release may lead to uncontrolled
movements of the suspension arm.
• Use the surgical microscope only when it is fully and correctly balanced!
• Balance the surgical microscope before surgery, without the patient.
• The subsequent test must not be carried out when the system is
positioned over the patient and must be conducted at a safe distance
from other persons and devices.
• To check that the system is correctly balanced, unlock the brakes. For this
step, hold the surgical microscope by both handgrips. If the system has
been correctly balanced, the surgical microscope can be moved almost
effortlessly.
For initial balancing or after a change of the accessories, proceed as follows:
• Loosen the friction knob (4).

Zero position • Press the button (1) until the motor of the balancing system stops.
This decouples the microscope body from its mount. The microscope has
been decoupled from its suspension and has adopted its center-of-gravity
position (zero position) if the white ring with marking (3) does not move
when you turn the microscope.
• Check whether the white ring is really in its zero position. If this is not the
case, turn it manually to the zero position.
• Press key (2).
Allow the microscope to hang in its center-of-gravity position while you
press the button (2).
After approx. 15 seconds, the microscope body has again been coupled with
its suspension. You can check this: when you move the microscope body, the
white ring (3) also moves.
• Continue pressing key (2) and check whether the microscope body
remains balanced in every tilt position. Depending on the accessories
attached, this can take some time (approx. 1 minute or longer). To check
this, lift the microscope body slightly and tilt it into different positions to
see whether the microscope body has been correctly balanced.
• If you have pressed button (2) for too long, you can correct the balance
by pressing button (1).

Adjusting the surgical microscope

Notes on adjustment
– To permit fast setup of the microscope, it is advisable to store the pupillary
distances and prescriptions of the different users so that they can be easily
preset during system preparation.
– Do not wear any bifocal or progressive lenses for the adjustment
procedure and subsequent work with the microscope.
Such lenses make it impossible to set the diopters correctly and result in
unsatisfactory imaging.
– Optimal image clarity in the eyepieces and at the optical port for
documentation equipment (photo, video) can be achieved only by
carefully focusing and precisely adjusting the binocular tube.

Adjusting the binocular tube

Adjusting the • Position the microscope vertically above a flat object, e.g. a piece of paper
interpupillary distance with writing on it.
• Bring the eyepieces on the binocular tube to eye distance, so that the two
eyepiece images (the object and the periphery of the field of view) merge
to produce a single image.

Adjusting the eyepieces The following procedure must be performed separately for each eyepiece in
the order described.
• Set the microscope to the smallest magnification on the microscope.
• Set the diopter adjustment ring on the eyepiece to the zero position.
• Look through the eyepiece and move the microscope to focus the image.
• Set the microscope to the highest magnification and correct the fine
focusing until the image is defined sharply.
• Now set to the smallest magnification once again without changing the
working distance.
• Set the diopter adjustment ring on the eyepiece to its maximum value
(plus direction).
• Look through the eyepiece and slowly turn the diopter adjustment ring to
the minus direction until the image is sharply defined.

Version 13.0
Page 150 G-30-1434-en
S7 / OPMI Sensera Preparations for use

• Repeat the entire procedure for the second eyepiece.

 The microscope is now adjusted so that a consistently sharp image is
produced throughout the entire magnification range without your having
to refocus after changing the magnification value. If this is not the case,
repeat the procedure.

Adjusting the eyecups • Adjust the eyecups so that you can survey the entire field of view.
– Viewing with eyeglasses: screw in the eyecups.
– Viewing without eyeglasses: remove the eyecups.

Adjusting the working distance and magnification

• Position the microscope above the surgical field so that you can work
comfortably.
• Roughly focus on the object by changing the distance between the
microscope and the object.
• Set the microscope to the highest magnification and correct the fine
focusing until the image is defined sharply.
• Set the microscope to the required magnification. The focal plane is
retained.

CAUTION Risk of injury to the patient caused by falling parts!

Due to collisions or incorrect installation, parts may fall and injure the patient.
• Check to ensure that all parts have been properly and firmly attached
before each use of the device.
• Check that the floor stand is secured in a stable position and can be
pivoted without causing collisions.

Preparing the device for sterile use

CAUTION Risk of infection due to soiled aseptic accessories and drapes!

• Use only sterile asepsis accessories and drapes suitable for the system!
• The products contained in the asepsis sets must be cleaned, disinfected
and sterilized before each use. This also applies to the first use after
delivery.
• Make sure that the operating personnel have been instructed in the
sterile operation of the device.

Attaching asepsis caps

The device can be equipped with resterilizable products for sterile use.
The asepsis sets available from ZEISS contain caps and handgrips which can
be sterilized in autoclaves. For more detailed information about sterilization,
please refer to the enclosed "Preparation of resterilizable products" manual
for each Asepsis Set.

Surgical microscope with a laser micromanipulator

• Please comply with the separate Instructions for Use for your
micromanipulator.
Before using the surgical microscope with a laser micromanipulator, you must
adjust the focal plane of the microscope (Varioskop) to the focal plane of the
micromanipulator.
The focal plane roughly corresponds to the working distance.
In the "User selection" menu, you can access the "Laser selection" menu via
the respective "Edit" button using the arrow button ( ) (see chapter:
Description/Laser menu/CO2laser).
• Use the arrow buttons ( , ) to adjust the working distance (focus) of
the Varioskop in the surgical microscope to the working distance of your
micromanipulator.
If the motorized fine focus (available as an option) has been integrated, the
motorized focusing function of the Varioskop automatically switches to the
fine focus mode. When the focusing buttons on the handgrip are pressed,
the complete surgical microscope including the micromanipulator is moved.
This ensures that the surgical microscope and the micromanipulator remain
focused on the same focal plane. Any manual change of the focus triggers an
error message.

CAUTION Use of a micromanipulator from another manufacturer!

• Use approved micromanipulators only.
• When using an approved micromanipulator from another manufacturer,
activate the "Focus Stop" function. This prevents inadvertent motor-driv-
en readjustment of the selected focus.
It is absolutely vital that the focal planes of the surgical microscope and of the
laser are identical!
Check this after mounting the micromanipulator, before every surgical
procedure (without patient) and before every use of the laser. Proceed as
follows:
• Set the microscope to maximum magnification.
• Hold a wooden spatula in the focal plane in such a way that you see it
sharply focused.
• Trigger a few trial shots of the laser at the spatula, slightly changing the
spatula position (relative to the focal plane) for each shot.

Version 13.0
G-30-1434-en Page 153
Preparations for use S7 / OPMI Sensera

The therapy beam of the laser displays its maximum effect in the focal
plane of the micromanipulator, where it burns a spot on the wooden
spatula. The wooden spatula must be sharply focused in this position.
Only then will the two focal planes coincide.
If this is not the case, refocus and correct the working distance in the Laser
selection menu.
• Repeat the test until full coincidence of the focal planes has been
obtained.
The link-up of a micromanipulator with the surgical microscope via the
adapter plate results in a medical system for which the system manufacturer
must meet the necessary requirements (approval, qualification, laser
protection, etc.). Please comply with the Instructions for Use provided by
the micromanipulator manufacturer and laser manufacturer. Supplementary
information is available from our Service department or from authorized
distributors.

Care of the device

NOTE Risk of injury to the head when using ceiling mounts!

Your head may collide with the device while the device is lowered.
• Move ceiling mount to its standby position when it is not in use.

Cleaning

Cleaning optical surfaces

The multilayer T* super anti-reflection coating of the optical components
(e.g. eyepieces, objective lenses) ensures optimum image quality. Even slight
contamination or a single fingerprint reduces image quality. To protect the
device's internal optics against dust, the device should never be left unused
without the objective lens, binocular tube and eyepieces attached. After use,
cover the device to protect it from dust. Always store additional objective
lenses, eyepieces and accessories in dust-free cases when they are not being
used.
Clean the outer surfaces of optical components (eyepieces, objective lenses)
only as required:
• Do not use aggressive or abrasive cleaning agents.
• Remove dust from the optical surfaces using a squeeze blower or a clean,
grease-free brush.
For regular cleaning of the surgical microscope’s objective lenses and
eyepieces, we recommend using the optics cleaning kit available from ZEISS.
For the catalog number, please see the section "Device data".

Fogging of optical surfaces

To keep the objective lenses from fogging, we recommend using an anti-
fogging agent. Anti-fogging agents provided by eyecare professionals for use
with eyeglass lenses are also suitable for ZEISS objective lenses.
• Observe the Instructions for Use pertaining to the anti-fogging agent
concerned.
An anti-fogging agent does not ensure fog-free eyepiece optics. It cleans
eyepiece optics and protects them against dirt, grease, dust, lint and
fingerprints.

S7 / OPMI Sensera Care and Maintenance

Cleaning mechanical surfaces

All of the system's mechanical surfaces can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.
Do not use any aggressive or abrasive cleaning agents.
Remove any residue using a mixture of 50% ethyl alcohol and 50% distilled
water plus a dash of household dish-washing liquid.

Sterilization

CAUTION Risk of infection due to soiled aseptic accessories and drapes!

• Only use sterile asepsis accessories and drapes suitable for the system!
• The products contained in the asepsis sets must be cleaned, disinfected
and sterilized before each use. This also applies to the first use after
delivery.
• Make sure that the operating personnel have been instructed in the
sterile operation of the device.

Asepsis sets
The asepsis sets available from ZEISS contain rubber caps and hand grips
that can be sterilized in autoclaves. For more detailed information about
sterilization, please refer to the enclosed "Preparation of resterilizable
products" manual for each Asepsis Set.

Sterile drapes (drapes)

Sterile single-use drapes are available to cover the system.
You'll find the drapes recommmended by ZEISS on Page 221 in the section
entitled "Ordering data, asepsis".

• Loosely attach the sterile drapes so that there is sufficient space for the
microscope supporting stand and the surgical microscope to move.

Care and Maintenance S7 / OPMI Sensera

NOTE Do not cover ventilation slots

Covering the ventilation slits can cause the device to overheat and damage it.
• Do not cover the ventilation slots in order to ensure that the lamps are
able to cool sufficiently and to avoid any loss in lamp functionality.

• Loosely fasten the drape using the adhesive strips.

Disinfection

CAUTION This could damage the paint on the device.

Using unapproved disinfectant can damage the paint on the device. Pieces
of paint can peel off and fall into the surgical field.
• Use a disinfectant based on aldehyde or alcohol. The addition of
quaternary compounds is acceptable.
• To avoid damaging the surfaces, do not use any disinfecting components
other than those specified below.
The maximum application concentrations are:
– For alcohol (tested with 2 propanol): 60%
– For aldehyde (tested with glutaraldehyde): 2%
– For quaternary compounds (tested with DDAC): 0.2%
