My view on the BRI

The BRI, the abbreviation of The Belt and Road Initiative, is an

initiative originally announced by President Xi during his official visits to

Indonesia and Kazakhstan in 2013, which involves infrastructure

development and investments in nearly 70 countries and international

organizations in Asia, Europe, and Africa. It pursues a bid to enhance

regional connectivity, and embrace a brighter future, delivering benefits

to all.

The motivations of the BRI are quite a lot. First, BRI helps improve

connectivity and make oversea trades more cost-effective. Second, it can

internationalize the renminbi (RMB) as a world currency.Third,

addressing excess domestic capacity is one of its major functions. And

motivations, like promoting Chinese enterprises’ opportunity and

international competitiveness, securing energy supply by diversifying

suppliers and import routes, diversifying oversea trade routes,

maintaining border security through development of China’s western

region, are also very significant, which are of great importance to China.

However, despite so many motivations, BRI still is confronted with

potential threats and challenges. On the one hand, there are challenges in

the host countries. The rising anti-Chinese sentiments among populations,

policy barriers , locals’ fear of the influx of Chinese labour force and

terrorist attacks and organized cross-border criminal activities are the

obstacles. On the other hand, there are potential threats from the western

countries.Continuous slander and accusations from other countries, are

causing strong responses and boycotts.

Though BRI is facing so many difficulties, I believe it will successfully

develop,bringing benefits to all.
