The case tells us about a situation happening in Morgan Stanley, a leading US


investment bank founded in 1935. Morgan Stanley's culture and values emphasize teamwork,
collaboration, and adherence to company policies and procedures. The firm places a strong
emphasis on its performance review process, which evaluates employees based on a set of
criteria, including leadership skills, teamwork, and adherence to company values.
Paul Nasr, a senior managing director at Morgan Stanley's Capital Market Services,
faced a dilema about one of his employees, an investment banker named Rob Parson. Rob
Parson is a highly talented and successful investment banker at Morgan Stanley who is up for
promotion to managing director. However according to his performance review, it might be hard
for Rob Parson to get the promotion. Rob Parson is known for being a highly successful and
productive banker, but also for his aggressive and abrasive personality, which has caused
problems for his colleagues in the past. Paul Nasr must decide whether to promote Rob Parson
to managing director despite his behavior and whether his contribution to the firm justifies his
personality.
The case tells us about the performance review process that Morgan Stanley uses to
evaluate its employees. The performance evaluation process at Morgan Stanley is a 360-
degree performance evaluation process in which an employee is evaliuated by superiors,
colleagues, and subordinates. The performance evaluation process is also aimed to provide
deveopmental feedback for improvement in 4 areas: Market/Profesional Skills, Management
and Leadership Effectiveness, Commercial Orientation, and Teamwork/One Firm Contribution.
