Topic / Title Invertebrates (Sponges, Cnidarians, Mollusks, Echinoderm at Arthropods)

Grade Level Grade 8

Time Allotment 60 minutes
Performance Standards
The learners should be able to report on the activities that the community engages in to protect, and
conserve endangered and economically important species.

Learning Competencies and Objectives

At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. classify organisms using the hierarchical taxonomic system (S8LT-IVh-20);
2. explain the concept of a species (SBLT-Ivg-19); and,
3. analyze and understand the uses and roles in the environment of these animals.

ELICIT (5 mins.) MATERIALS

To elicit prior knowledge, the class will be shown different pictures of Laptop
invertebrates (Sponges, Cnidarians, Mollusks, Echinoderm at Arthropods) and TV/LED monitor
let the students analyze each picture. (Picture Analysis). Then, the teacher
would ask the following questions:
1. Are you familiar with these pictures?
2. How do you describe each picture?
3. Where can you commonly see these kinds of organisms?

(review)
ENGAGE (5 mins.)
At the start of the class, a video presentation of pictures of invertebrates will Laptop, Video Clip,
be shown. TV
Ask the students to list some common characteristics of invertebrates.

(MOTIVATION)
EXPLORE (20 mins)
The students will be asked to do Activity 3. What can you do to be protected Laptop, TV,
from dengue? PowerPoint
The students will study the different stages in the life cycle of Aedes aegypti.

Possible Questions:
1. How does the adult of this mosquito look?
2. Describe the breeding place of A. aegypti.
3. In which places in your home, school or surroundings can this mosquito
breed?
Name at least 5.
4. What do you think will happen to a larva that is removed from water?
5. Based on your study of the life cycle of Aedes aegypti, how important is
water to the mosquito?
Review your answers to Q3.
6. What can you do to stop the reproduction of the dengue virus-carrying

mosquito? Name at least 5.
7. Into what group of arthropods would you classify the mosquito and why?

(DISCUSSION/
PRESENTATION)
EXPLAIN (5 mins)
The teacher will make students explain what they have learned from Laptop, TV,
the activity. The students will explain their answers and post all their PowerPoint
questions generated from the activity.

The teacher will further facilitate learning by making them answer the
questions they have posted.

What practices can you suggest to prevent the spread of dengue?

(DEVELOPING MASTERY)
ELABORATE (15 mins.)
The teacher will elaborate the topic by discussing the following. Laptop, TV,
PowerPoint
1. What are the characteristics of the five phyla that belong to Invertebrates?
2. How do these organisms interact in the environment?
3. Describe the life cycle of Aedes aegypti. (or How does A. aegypti evolve from
larval stage to the adult stage?)

(APPLICATION)
EVALUATE (5 mins. )
Matching type: Laptop, TV,
Match the group of invertebrates in column A with the pictures of the PowerPoint
organisms that belong to invertebrates in column B.

EXTEND (5mins.)
