Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the (Grade 9 Cookery) Self-Learning Module 2 on (Importance of


Desserts in a Meal)!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed, and


reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active

EXPECTATIONS

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

A. Discuss the definition of desserts;


B. Explain the importance of desserts in a meal; and
C. Appreciate the relevance of dessert as part of the meal.

PRETEST

Directions: Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if the


statement is incorrect.
1. Dessert is a course that concludes a meal.
2. A beverage such as dessert wine and liqueur can also be considered as
a dessert.
3. The term “dessert” originated from the French word desservir, meaning
“to clear the table”.
4. Fruits is the most common type of dessert.
5. Dessert foods often contain relatively high amounts of sugar and fats
resulting to higher calorie count per gram than other foods.

RECAP

Directions: Arrange the jumbled letters to identify what type of tool or


equipment used in preparing desserts is stated.

1. R R A E T G- This is used to shred, grate and slice ingredients such as


cheese.
2. S S O P N O- This is used to spoon liquids over foods and to lift foods
out of the pot. They can be made of stainless steel or plastic.
3. S S H I K W- This is used for whipping eggs or batter, and blending of
gravies, sauces, and soups.
4. R E M I X- This is used for beating, creaming, mixing, and whipping
ingredients.
5. E G N A R- This is a kitchen appliance used for cooking food.

LESSON

Sweets were fed to the Gods in ancient Mesopotamia and other ancient
civilizations. Dried fruits and honey were the first sweeteners until the spread
of sugarcane affects the development of desserts.
The word “dessert” originated from the French term desservir which means
“to clear the table”.
Dessert is a course that is given as a conclusion to the meal. It is consisting
of sweet foods in a form of confections, beverage such as dessert wine and
liqueur.
Dessert foods often contain relatively high amount of fats and sugar which
results to higher calorie count as compared to other foods.
Reasons for eating desserts and sweets:
• Desserts give an extra flavor and texture which you do not get in
vegetables, meats, eggs, and fruits.
• Desserts can give an opportunity to become artistic through creating
designs and innovation using sweet treats.
