It is also responsible for developing new specifications to meet national requirements and the
needs of students and teachers. OCR is a not-for-profit organisation; any surplus made is
invested back into the establishment to help towards the development of qualifications and
support, which keep pace with the changing needs of today’s society.
This mark scheme is published as an aid to teachers and students, to indicate the requirements
of the examination. It shows the basis on which marks were awarded by examiners. It does not
indicate the details of the discussions which took place at an examiners’ meeting before marking
commenced.
All examiners are instructed that alternative correct answers and unexpected approaches in
candidates’ scripts must be given marks that fairly reflect the relevant knowledge and skills
demonstrated.
Mark schemes should be read in conjunction with the published question papers and the report
on the examination.
OCR will not enter into any discussion or correspondence in connection with this mark scheme.

INTRODUCTION
Your first task as an Examiner is to become thoroughly familiar with the material on which the examination depends. This material includes:
You should ensure also that you are familiar with the administrative procedures related to the marking process. These are set out in the OCR
booklet Instructions for Examiners. If you are examining for the first time, please read carefully Appendix 5 Introduction to Script Marking:
Notes for New Examiners.
Please ask for help or guidance whenever you need it. Your first point of contact is your Team Leader.

1. Method
measure mass of (excess) zinc
Level 3 (5–6 marks) (using 2 decimal place balance)
All three scientific points are covered in detail and measure volume of hydrochloric acid
explained thoroughly. (using measuring cylinder)
mix zinc and acid in flask
The method is logically structured and clear calculations measure gas volume at time intervals

volume of acid. The drawing of a tangent and 2. Calculations
determination of the gradient is communicated well. moles of hydrogen

minimum mass of zinc
0.003 65.4 = 0.20 g
Level 2 (3–4 marks)
moles of hydrochloric acid
Candidates cover all three scientific points but
explanations may be incomplete. Zn + 2HCl ZnCl2 + H2
OR 0.00300 2 = 0.00600 mol
Two of the scientific points are described thoroughly with volume/concentration of acid
no omissions. If [HCl(aq)] = 0.1 mol dm–3 appropriate
volume of acid = 0.006 1000/0.1 = 60 cm3
There is a line of reasoning presented with some If [HCl(aq)] ≥ 0.3 mol dm–3, too low (≤ 20 cm3)
structure. The information presented is relevant and If [HCl(aq)] ≤ 0.03 mol dm–3 too high (≥ 200 cm3)
supported by some evidence. e.g. there are clear
calculations to justify mass and acid volume supported by 3. Processing results

determining initial rate related to tangent but no detail of Draw a tangent at t = 0
how to measure gradient.. Gradient of tangent = initial rate
Gradient = volume/time
