* Height and Weight

* Hearing
PART I.

A. INTRODUCTION

Health risks can sometimes be confusing, but they're important to understand. Knowing the risks, you
and your family may face can help you find ways to avoid health problems. It can also keep you from
fretting over unlikely threats.

Staying healthy is very important for us to do our everyday activities. There are personal health issues
and concerns that we need to know for us to manage our own health. The following are some of personal
health issues and concerns like height, weight and hearing. Knowing these issues will make us observe
healthy habits and lifestyles for us to live a healthy life.
B. DISCUSSION
PERSONAL HEALTH ISSUES AND CONCERNS
A. HEIGHT AND WEIGHT

•Stunted Growth – The lack of height for a

child’s age as a result of improper nutrition,
recurrence of illness and environmental
conditions.

•Underweight- having less body fat than what is optimally

healthy
A person is considered underweight if the Body Mass
Index (BMI) is less than 18.5 or the weight is 15% to 20%
below normal for the age and height group. An underweight
person should choose nutrient-rich foods and do regular
exercise.

•Overweight and Obesity– having more body fat than what is
optimally healthy.
A person is overweight or obese if there is an increase body
weight in relation to height. If the Body Mass Index (BMI) is
15% to 20% above normal for the age and height group, he or
she is considered overweight or obese.
Be aware of personal health issues and concerns about height
and weight. Observe healthy diet, regular exercise and enough
rest and sleep to prevent diseases.

B. HEARING

Hearing, or auditory perception, is the ability

to perceive sounds by detecting vibrations,
changes in the pressure of the surrounding medium
through time, through an organ such as the ear. Let
us learn the personal health issues and concerns
about it.

•Impacted cerumen – Earwax builds up in the ear

and blocks the ear canal. can cause temporary
hearing loss and ear pain.

Figure 4: https://tinyurl.com/55exurpe

The ear wax has both lubricating and antibacterial properties. If it is pushed against the eardrum by cotton
buds or hairpins, it blocks the ear canal and causes hearing problems. If impacted cerumen or hardened
earwax is untreated, it can lead to hearing loss, irritation, pain in the ears, dizziness, ringing ears and other
problems. Do not use cotton buds and other objects. Instead, use soft cloth in cleaning the ears

• Swimmer’s Ear - is an infection in the outer ear

canal, which runs from your eardrum to the
outside of your head. It's often brought on by
water that remains in your ear after swimming,
creating a moist environment that aids bacterial
growth.

2
• If untreated, it causes severe pain, redness or
swelling of the outer ear and fever. This condition
needs to be treated by a doctor. It is advised to use
ear plugs during swimming activities. Clean your
ears with a wet towel after taking a bath to avoid
water getting into the ear canal.

• Otitis Media - inflammation or infection located
in the middle ear. Otitis media can occur as a
result of a cold, sore throat, or respiratory
infection.

Figure 6: https://tinyurl.com/5pwym6b3

This disease is common in children because the tube that allows fresh air in the middle ear is not yet
fully developed. Children experience middle ear infections due to virus or bacteria caused by common cold.
This may result in pulling at the ear, increased crying, and poor sleep. As a remedy, apply a warm moist
cloth over the affected ear. You may also use over the counter medicines or eardrops to ease the pain. If the
pain worsens, consult a doctor.

C. READINGS
Taking care of your ears is important in many ways. Cleaning is one step, while preventing and
treating infections is another. Ear care also include taking steps to avoid unnecessary noise for possible
hearing loss

D. EXAMPLES / ILLUSTRATION

Bathroom Scale- is a device used to measure weight or mass. These are also known as mass scales,
weight scales, mass balances, and weight balances.

Stadiometer- is along ruler attached to the

wall. It has a sliding horizontal headpiece
that’s adjusted to rest on top of your head. It’s
a quick way of accurately measuring your
height.

Otolaryngologist- is a medical specialty

which is focused on the ears, nose, and
throat. It is also called otolaryngology-head
and neck surgery because specialists are
trained in both medicine and surgery. An
otolaryngologist is often called an ear, nose,
and throat doctor, or an ENT for short.
