imagePROGRAF iPF720/iPF710/iPF610/iPF605 Service Guide

I. Product Overview
The Canon imagePROGRAF iPF720/iPF710 are 36-inch 5-color wide format
printers and the iPF610/iPF605 are 24-inch 5-color wide format printers.
The imagePROGRAF iPF720/iPF710 and iPF610/iPF605 are designed for the
following:
• General Business Environments: Users who need to create
presentations, signs, posters, displays, document/packaging proofs, or
other oversize prints with expressive color.
• Technical Documents: Users creating CAD drawings, architectural
elevations, GIS maps, marketing planograms, or other renderings
requiring fine sharp lines, smooth curves, crisp text, fade/scratch
resistance, and fast speeds.
The imagePROGRAF iPF720/iPF710 and iPF610/iPF605 are replacements for
the imagePROGRAF iPF700/iPF600. The core technology and specifications
remain similar on the imagePROGRAF iPF720/iPF710 and iPF610/iPF605
compared to the imagePROGRAF iPF700/iPF600 with enhancements in
usability, ease of use and productivity.
The imagePROGRAF iPF720 includes an 80 GB Hard Disk Drive, which
improves print performance in network workgroup user environments.
The imagePROGRAF iPF605 is similar to the iPF610, however, without a
cassette. This model is available for CAD users who print mainly on roll paper.
The imagePROGRAF iPF605 requires less installation space, which enables
installation in a small office.
As an ENERGY STAR Partner, Canon U.S.A., Inc. has determined that this product
meets the Energy Star guidelines for energy efficiency.

II. Design Features

A. Dye and Pigment Reactive Ink Technology
Canon's 5-color dye/pigment Reactive Ink technology utilizes four highly
colorfast dye inks for producing bold, expressive color, plus two channels of
matte black ink for printing precise lines, smooth curves and small text on
technical and office documents. These Canon inks provide superior adhesion
to media, scratch and marker resistance and ensure minimal "bleeding"
between colors and text.
B. PrintHead (PF-03)
The PrintHead (PF-03) uses 15,360 nozzles to achieve true 2400 x 1200 dpi
images at high print speeds.
The superfine 4pl droplets produce delicate color gradations and high-
definition. The print head contains five colors employing 15,360 nozzles
(2,560 nozzles for each color and 5,120 nozzles for matte black).
C. Large-format printer Common Architecture Print Controller
The Large-format printer Common Architecture (L-COA) print controller
intelligently processes the print data to implement high-speed processing to
lay ink down accurately for optimal image quality.
The L-COA controller optimizes image processing and print engine
performance while directing the high-precision, super high-density FINE print
head.
D. Multiple Media Handling Options
The imagePROGRAF iPF720/iPF710 and iPF610/iPF605 printers offer three
(3) media feed options
1. Manual feed – a Front-loading Manual feed (iPF720/iPF710 and
iPF610/iPF605 printers) and a Top-loading manual feed (iPF610/iPF605
printers only).
2. Roll Feed – a roll feed for longer paper lengths. Two and three-inch core
adapters are included to accommodate Canon roll-stock media. The
printers also include a built-in rotary media cutter.
3. Paper Cassette (iPF610 only) - a front-loading cassette for pre-cut sheet
media.
• Black ink print feature
• Advanced media settings
E. 80 GB Hard Disk Drive (imagePROGRAF iPF 720 Only)
The addition of a built-in 80 GB hard disk drive within the imagePROGRAF
iPF720 increases productivity by relieving workload from the host PC while
providing a large capacity for print job data storage, and retrieval.
This 80GB hard drive enables job data to be stored in protected mail boxes
for easy access via a web browser or at the printer for job re-printing.

F. HDI Driver
The Canon HDI Driver for AutoCAD applications creates a vector graphically
accurate representation of the printed data.
Features:
• Exact page size that corresponds with the actual print size
• Print Type setting
• Print Quality setting
• Color Mode setting
• Brightness slide bar setting
G. imagePROGRAF Printer Driver
The imagePROGRAF printer driver works with both Windows and Macintosh
operating systems.
Features:
• Easy-to-use preset document profiles (examples are Poster, CAD,
Photo).
• Borderless printing.
• Automatic print quality options dependent on print application and media
• The Real Preview feature lets users ensure that the print setting and the
layout on the roll paper is correct by providing a real time preview,
allowing users to change the print setting even after clicking on "print".
• The Free Layout feature enables nesting and custom layouts of images
or files of nearly any type (available for both Windows and Mac driver).
• The imageRUNNER Enlargement Copy feature (a hot folder solution to
print Color imageRUNNER PDFs directly without opening in a PDF
viewer) built-in to the printer driver lets users transfer data from their
Color imageRUNNER device with Universal Send to the
imagePROGRAF printer enabling users to easily create posters from
hard copy documents.
• The Economy Print Mode produces draft prints on plain paper while
reducing the total ink consumption. This new feature regulates the use of
each ink tank to produce high-speed output with significantly less ink
usage.
H. PosterArtist Lite
Canon's PosterArtist Lite (bundled with the imagePROGRAF iPF720 and
iPF605 Only), provides users with the ability to create professional large
format prints quickly. Using four steps users can create posters for immediate
use in a variety of applications. The PosterArtist QuickCopy enables the

E. Consumable Parts
Consumable parts are parts having a limited life that will be reached during a
customer’s specific machine operation and should be replaced as needed.
Examples of consumable parts may include, but are not limited to feed rollers,
cleaner blades, etc. The consumable parts (below) show an estimated life to
assist in the initial parts/supplies planning.
Note: All consumable parts shown in the tables below are for reference
purposes only and are subject to change without notice.

F. Consumables (Main Unit)

Consumables are materials consumed with regular use and cannot be
reused. Consumables include but are not limited to paper, chemicals and ink.
A number of factors go into the approximate life expectancy of a consumable,
for example, in the case of ink yield, paper size and the amount of coverage
per page must be considered.
Note: All estimated life targets shown in the table below are estimates for
reference purposes only and are subject to change without notice. Actual
usage will vary.

H. Periodic Replacement Parts

The imagePROGRAF iPF720/iPF710 and the iPF610/iPF605 do not have any
periodic replacement parts.
I. Maintenance Kit
Canon USA has prepared an imagePROGRAF iPF720/iPF710 and the
iPF610/iPF605 Maintenance Kit to help provide high durability of the printer
and keep the operating costs at a minimum. This Maintenance Kit should be
installed at the interval listed in the table below to reduce possible downtime.
The printer has a built-in counter for these consumable parts, which will
display messages to notify the user when the maintenance kit should be
installed.

VII. Suggested End-User Customer Service Offerings

A. Warranty Support
1. imagePROGRAF Limited Warranty
The imagePROGRAF Large Format Printer Limited Warranty is effective
for a period of one (1) year following delivery to the original purchaser.
No warranty is given for any consumables, such as paper or ink cartridges
with the exception of the print head.
For detailed warranty information, please refer to the Appendix for the
imagePROGRAF Limited Warranty page 25 and the imagePROGRAF
Print Head Limited Warranty page 26.
2. Warranty Reimbursement
Dealers or Authorized Service Providers
There are two warranty reimbursement programs available for service
providers: Dispatch by CITS, or the Warranty Marketing Program. The
Service Provider must register through the Authorized Service Provider
Customer Registration (ASCR) system.
Authorized Service Provider Customer Registration System
The ASCR System is the venue used to link the Customer’s product serial
number to the service provider. The ASCR System can be accessed
through the e-Support website in the Warranty section. In order to access
the ACSR system, you will be required to re-enter your e-Support ID and
password (if your e-Support ID and password does not work, instructions
to enable it will appear). Select “New ASCR” to enter each model serial
number into the system.
Register your Customer’s product serial number(s) to your service
organization, and choose one of two customer support models: use the
Dispatch by CITS option to have calls dispatched to your dealership, or
the Warranty Marketing Program option to manage all calls from your
customer. Products not registered to Dispatch by CITS or the Warranty
Marketing Program will default to a support model where a 3rd party
service provider is dispatched by CITS. The three models are described
below in more detail:
a) Dispatch by CITS
This is available to ASCR Registered Customers where the Warranty
Marketing Program option has not been selected.
Help desk support will be managed by CITS with dispatch to the
Service Provider of record.

imagePROGRAF iPF720/iPF710/iPF610/iPF605 Service Guide April 2008

Rev.2 Page 16
imagePROGRAF iPF720/iPF710/iPF610/iPF605 Service Guide

CITS supports the end-user via toll free telephone access to the CITS
Call Center. The Call Center takes the first call from the customer and
provides assistance as follows:
• Answers product related questions.
• Assists the end-user with pre-and post sales inquires.
• Redirects Customer calls to the Service provider of record. If there
is no Service provider of record, CITS will:
o Attempt to resolve hardware, software, and operational
problems.
o When telephone based troubleshooting fails to resolve a
problem, service will be dispatched accordingly.
To obtain reimbursement for service delivered during the end-user
warranty, you must be dispatched by CITS. For this to occur, the end-
user must contact CITS first to attempt all user-performed service
remedies. Should these not resolve the problem, the Service Provider
of record will be dispatched (see ASCR process for instructions on how
to register your company as the Service Provider of record.)
Labor compensation of $135 per incident will automatically be issued
to the dispatched service provider (your company) once the service
call has been closed with CITS. Defective parts reimbursement will be
issued upon receipt of an e-Tag claim with the defective part.
• The e-Tag Claim System
Canon USA provides reimbursement for defective parts replaced in
support of the end-user warranty. Reimbursement is requested
through the e-Tag system found under the “Warranty” tab on the e-
Support website.
Complete all applicable fields on the e-Tag form and include it in
the box with the defective part. Send the part and form to the
address provided by the e-Tag system. Reimbursement will be
processed upon receipt of the part. The credit will then be posted
on the ISG Central portal within 24 hours of authorization by the
warranty control section
• The On-Line Warranty Credit Inquiry
The On-Line Warranty Credit Inquiry allows your dealership to
check, download and print details of e-Tag credits.
To acquire access to the on-line Warranty Credit feature, please
contact your dealership’s ISG Central Dealer Administrator or your
Canon Regional office for assistance.
To check your on-line warranty credits, log onto the ISG Central
website at http://www.isgcentral.cusa.canon.com.
Go to the Canon Network Access (CNA) site to view eTag warranty
credit information.

Rev.2 Page 17
imagePROGRAF iPF720/iPF710/iPF610/iPF605 Service Guide

The e-Tag claim form can be found in the warranty section of the e-
Support Center website at http://www.support.cusa.canon.com.
b) Warranty Marketing Program
This is available to ASCR Registered Customers where the Warranty
Marketing Program option has been selected. The Service Provider of
record will handle 100% of all Customer Support. Should the customer
contact CITS, CITS will redirect the call to the Service Provider of
record.
Some Service Providers may choose to have their own help desk
serve as the "first point of contact" rather than CITS. This places the
burden of having an effective in-warranty call avoidance process upon
the service provider. Service calls performed under this arrangement
are not eligible for labor reimbursement under the process described in
Dispatch by CITS page 16. Instead, a flat-rate of $24.00 will be issued
to the service provider for each product (serial number) they choose to
support in this manner. The ASCR process allows the service provider
to select this option and it is incumbent on the service provider to
provide service support that is consistent with commercially acceptable
standards. In cases where the service provider has accepted the flat-
rate payment but has not provided service support to the end-user, the
service provider could lose authorization to service the product.
c) Unregistered Serial Numbers
Help desk support will be managed by CITS with dispatch supported
by a 3rd party service company.

B. Post-Warranty Support
If a Customer calls CITS for service after the product warranty has expired,
the customer will be instructed to contact the dealer registered to their product
under the ASCR Program (if the dealer selected either Dispatch by CITS or
the Warranty Marketing Program).
In addition, a Canon CarePAK (http://www.carepak.canon.com) Extended
Service Plan is available for the customer if a Dealer or Reseller is unable to
or chooses not to provide post-warranty service.
With the CarePAK Extended Service Plan, the customer will receive toll-free
telephone support and, if needed, on-site repair service for their Canon
Product. The customer should choose from plans that offer either one or two
year extended coverage.
Note: CarePAK coverage cannot be extended beyond the original term
purchased.
The CarePAK Extended 1 yr. or 2 yr. Service Plan must be purchased during
the product warranty period and goes into effect on the day the original
warranty expires. It does not include extended coverage for any
consumables, such as paper, ink cartridges or the Print Head.

VIII. Product Technical Support Offerings

A. Authorized Service Providers
Service is provided through a Canon authorized service provider or through a
3rd party service company managed by CITS (Canon Information Technology
Services). Canon authorized service providers are expected to service the
equipment they sell. Since these products are also available through a sales-
only distribution channel, the serial number of the product must be registered
to the service provider of record through the ASCR System (refer to the
ASCR System on Page 16) in order to ensure that service is not provided
through a 3rd party service company.
B. Authorization Policy
To become service authorized and maintain authorization to service the
imagePROGRAF models, each service provider’s location must have at least
one technician who has successfully completed the imagePROGRAF
iPF720/iPF710 and the iPF610/iPF605 Training Program and received
certified status.
C. Technical Support / Escalation
Technical support is available by contacting CITS Monday through Friday at
1-800-423-2366. CITS Support is available Monday through Friday, 8:00am-
8:00pm Eastern Time, except holidays. Before contacting CITS for help, the
technician should have exhausted all other resources including: the service
manual, the e-Support website for technical publications and their internal
service support infrastructure.
D. Internet Support
1. Canon USA e-Support Center Website
Canon USA’s Systems and Technical Support Division provides high
quality e-Support via the Internet and is only available for Canon USA
