All the animals in the world can be divided into two groups: vertebrates and invertebrates. Each group is
then further divided into sub-groups based on their similar characteristics. The group called vertebrates
is made up of all animals that have a backbone or a spine. Invertebrates are the opposite since this group
of animals do not have backbones or spines. Instead, many of them have a hard outer covering called an
exoskeleton. A beetle is a great example of an invertebrate. The group, vertebrates, can then be divided
into the following sub-groups: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. Each sub-group has its own
special similarities. Mammals are those animals that give birth to live babies and the mothers nurse or
suckle their babies for a period of time. Humans and dogs are mammals. Birds are all those animals that
are covered with feathers, have two legs and two wings. Reptiles are cold-blooded and covered with
rough skin or scales like a caiman or snake. Amphibians, like frogs, are born in water then live on land
when they get older. Fish, like salmon and tilapia, live in water, breathe through gills, have no legs and
are covered with scales.
19) According to the writer, how are animals placed into specific groups?

Maps are diagrams that are used to represent an actual place on paper. They show cities, roads,
churches, houses and even landmarks that can be found in the place represented. Maps can also show
physical landforms, such as mountains, rivers and beaches, found in the place being shown. Maps can
also be used to obtain directions to find places in an unknown country. Maps can be grouped
according to the features they represent. A book of maps is called an atlas. When a map is being
created, there are certain features that must be included. These features are: a title, a scale, a key or
legend and a direction compass. The title of a map is the name of the map which tells the place
represented as well as the kind of map. The scale is a ruler that is drawn on the map and can be used
to give the actual, real-life distances between places on the map. The key is also called a legend and it
tells the meanings of different symbols used on the map. The direction compass is used to tell the
directions of one place from another on the map. It represents the actual, real-life directions between
places.

Have you ever been to the countryside and wondered how the people who live there survive?
On the other hand, do you live in the countryside and wonder why people would ever want
to move to the city to live? If so, then you are not the only one. While some people think
about moving to other areas to live, it is not always the case. Rural areas, like the countryside,
are often isolated and far away from towns and cities. Rural areas have very few tall buildings
and the people who live there are mostly simple people who live off the land. That means
that they grow their own foods and rear their own animals for meat. While this sounds like a
good thing, there are some disadvantages to living in rural areas. The roads are often in bad
conditions, and they sometimes do not have access to electricity or pipe-borne water. While
most of the older people are used to the rural living conditions, the younger ones usually
tend to leave to seek better living conditions and modern conveniences like access to jobs
and better schools.

Wetlands are flat expanses of land where the water does not drain off. The ground of a wetland is
always wet and saturated with water. Wetlands are grouped according to the kinds of soil and
plants living there. Wetlands can be classified as swamps, marshes or bogs. Wetlands have a
big role to play in the environment. They provide homes for plants and animals, protect
shorelines, prevent flooding to a great extent and help to clean polluted air and water. In
Trinidad, one of the most important wetlands is the Caroni Swamp. It is the second largest
mangrove wetland in Trinidad and Tobago. It is home to over two hundred and fifty species of
birds and other animals including snakes, crabs, caiman, oysters and fish. Within recent years,
there has been the introduction of flamingos into the nesting grounds. The Caroni Swamp is
an internationally protected wetland since it is home to the Scarlet Ibis which is the National
Bird of Trinidad. The thick expanse of mangrove trees in the Caroni Swamp helps to clean the
