What Is Punctuation?

Punctuation Is Very Important Part Of English Grammar ,Even Though You May Know All The
Parts Of Speech Or How To Form Complete Sentence Without English Punctuation,You Can’t
Indicate When A Sentence Ends Or Correctly Separate Items In A List.

There Are Many Different Types Of Punctuation.

Question Mark, Exclamation , Comma ,Colons

1 Question Mark(?)
Question Mark Is Placed At The End Of A Sentence Which A Direct Question .Here Are Some
Examples

 What Is The Capital City Of Ethiopia?

 Who Told You That?
 In Which Country Did Coffee Originates

If The Question Is A Direct Quotation ,Repeating The Speaker Exact Words A Question Mark Is
Still Used.

Example :- “Have You A Pen I Can Borrow?” She Asked

Generally :- Distinguished From A Sentence That Makes A Statement, Delivers , A Command Or

Expresses An Exclamation.

2 Exclamation (!)
Use An Exclamation Mark At The End Of A Sentence To Express Exicitement ,Strong Emotion
Or A Sense Of Urgency.

An Exclamation Mark Is Used To Add An Emphasis To The Sentence .

For Example There A Fly In My Soup. There Is Afly In My Soap!

Eg:- Be Carefull!

3. Comma(,)
Use Commas Separate Items In A Series Of Three Or More Things

Eg:- I Bought Coffee ,Tea ,And Milk.

*Use A Comma To Separate Independent Clauses (Complete Thoughts )When They Are Joined
By The Following Conjunction:

For And Nor But Or Yet So

E.G :- I Want To Go Out Tonight ,But I Need To Study.

- He Is A Doctor, And She Is A Lawyer.

*But Remember To The Conjunctions FANBOYS.

4 Colon(:)
A Colon Is Used To Show That Something Is To Follow.

-A Colon Has Three Main Uses. The First Is A Word Introducing A Quotation ,An Explanation ,An
Example, Or A Series.

E.G He Was Planning Tyo Study Four Subjects : Physics, Maths ,Biology And Chemistry.

-The Second Is Between Independent Clauses When The Second Explains The First ,Similar To A
Semicolon:

E.G I Didn’t Have Time To Get Changed :I Was Already Late.

-The Third Use Of Colon Is For Emphasis:

E.G There Was One Thing She Loved More Than Any Other: Her Dog.
