Spreading the message

We would like to make “the most beautiful building” for the Museo de al Memoria de
Andalucía (Andalusia’s Museum of Memory) in Granada. The MA. A museum that
wishes to transmit the entire history of Andalusia. As early as Roman times, Strabo
described the inhabitants of Andalusia as “the most cultivated of the Iberians, who
have laws in verse.”

Our project for the MA is a building in line with the Central Headquarters of the
CAJA GRANADA Savings Bank that we finished in 2001. We propose a podium
building measuring 60x120 m and rising three stories, so that its upper floor
coincides with the podium of the main CAJA GRANADA building. And its façade as
well. Everything is arranged around a central courtyard, in elliptical form in which
circular ramps rise, connecting the three levels and creating a very interesting
spatial tension. The dimensions of the elliptical courtyard have been taken from the
courtyard of the Palace of Charles the V in the Alhambra.

And to crown it all, as if it were a Gate to the City, a strong vertical piece emerges,
the same height and width as the main building of the CAJA GRANADA. It thus
appears before the highway that circles Granada as a screen-façade that sends
messages over the large plasma screens that will cover it entirely. Like Piccadilly
Circus in London or Times Square in New York.

And to finish the entire operation, a large horizontal platform all the way to the River,
the MA open FIELD that will serve as a public space in that new area of the city of
Granada.

The new building, silent in its forms, is resounding in its elements to communicate
the messages of the new millennium in which we are already immersed.
El MA de Granada, EL MÁS HERMOSO EDIFICIO

“Se trata de hacer el más hermoso edificio”, así empieza la memoria del Proyecto
del nuevo Centro Cultural que, para la Memoria de Andalucía nos encargó CAJA
GRANADA. Eso queremos que llegue a ser: el edificio más hermoso.

El MA. El MA de Granada. Suena bien: el MA. Suena muy bien, el MA, como si del
mar, de la mar se tratara. De esos dos mares en los que se mira la tierra andaluza.
De esos dos mares transmisores de la Cultura de la que está empapada toda la
Historia de Andalucía, la Memoria de Andalucía.

Y es que Andalucía ha sido siempre culta, profundamente culta. La Cultura más

antigua de Occidente diríamos parafraseando a los gaditanos cuando hablamos de
Cádiz, nuestra ciudad, como la más antigua de Occidente, que no en vano es
trimilenaria. Ya Herodoto hablaba de esta tierra nuestra y de Argantonio en el siglo
V a. de C. Y ya en el Libro de los Reyes se habla de Tarsis. Y ya Estrabón describía
a los andaluces como “los más cultos de los iberos, que poseen escritura y tienen
escritos de antigua memoria, poemas y LEYES EN VERSO, que ellos dicen de seis
mil años”. Y los poetas andaluces, García Lorca y Cernuda, Juan Ramón Jiménez y
Alberti. Y los emperadores y los filósofos de la Andalucía universal: Trajano y
Adriano y Séneca. Y los pintores luminosos: Velázquez y Murillo, Zurbarán y Alonso
Cano. Y Falla, y Picasso. ¡Ay Andalucía!

Proponemos para sede del MA un edificio en continuidad con la Sede Central de

CAJA GRANADA que construimos tras el ya lejano Concurso de 1992.
Proponemos un edificio podio, silencioso, de 60x120 m y con tres plantas de altura,
de manera que su plano superior coincida con el del cuerpo bajo de podio del
edificio actual de CAJA GRANADA. Organizado con un patio central de traza
elíptica, a la manera en que lo hace el patio del Palacio de Carlos V en la Alhambra.

Y como remate de toda la edificación, como si de una PUERTA DE LA CIUDAD se

tratara, nuestro MA tiene un cuerpo de edificación, como una pantalla, exactamente
de la misma altura y longitud que el cubo de la Sede Central de CAJA GRANADA.
Sólo su espesor es menor, una crujía de 6 m. Aparece así en el conjunto un edificio
pantalla que parece anunciar con su presencia la llamada al mundo de la Cultura.
Funcionalmente el edificio es muy sencillo y enormemente flexible.

El nuevo edificio, silencioso en sus formas, es clamoroso en sus elementos de

transmisión de un mensaje que quiere hacer oír su voz y que su imagen llegue con
una fuerza tan grande o mayor que el Gugenheim de Bilbao o el MOMA de Nueva
York. Cuando paseaba hace poco por Times Square en Nueva York, contemplaba
asombrado cómo a través de la tecnología más avanzada, ya real, las poderosas
pantallas de leds transmitían con fuerza sus mensajes a los cuatro vientos. Y cómo
las gentes de todo el mundo que por allí pasaban, asistían asombrados al
espectáculo mediático. Y soñaba que en un día futuro nuestro nuevo edificio, como
Puerta de la Cultura de Andalucía, pudiera lanzar a esos cuatro vientos universales
las imágenes de la MEMORIA de ANDALUCÍA. El ayer, el hoy y el mañana.

building of the CAJA GRANADA. There is a viewpoint in the last floor, with wonderful views to
the Alhambra, Sierra Nevada and Sierra Elvira.

The dimensions of the elliptical courtyard have been taken from the courtyard of the Palace of
