To train Geotechnical engineers with professional responsibility, professional ethics,
sense of responsibility for job and the ability to:
1. Master the knowledge and basic requirements of a young intellectual in the
social community and the knowledge of a geological engineer.
2. Think, approach technical issues, self-study and acquire professional
knowledge.
3. Organization and management.
4. Analyze, design, research and handle problems in the field of Geotechnical
Engineering.

d. Job opportunity
After graduation, engineers will be highly desired by employers and successful in
many different fields. Students can work in local or foreign companies and establish
their own companies to operate independently. Occupation opportunities include soil
and rock laboratory testing, foundation design, geotechnical survey, water
exploitation, soil reinforcements, etc.
In addition, engineers can also work in research, teaching and consulting
organizations, and take on positions such as design engineers or operating engineers.

2 TRAINING DURATION: 4.5 years
4 ADMISSION OBJECT
According to the general regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training and the
University: Students who have graduated from high school, vocational secondary
school and passed the entrance exam.
5 TRAINING PROCEDURE AND GRADUATION CONDITION
Training form: full-time, studying at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology -
Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City. The curriculum is taught in
Vietnamese.
Students must complete all course credits specified in the training program and
complete the final thesis to be graduated.
6 SCALE
Comply with Article 10 Evaluation scale of the academic regulation of full time
university according to the credit system (issued according to Decision No. 1871/QD-
BKDT dated October 31st, 2005 by the Rector of Ho Chi Minh City University of

Course description: Calculus 2 involves the basic knowledge about the integration of
functions of several variables, line integrals, field theory and series.
Course goals: The subject provides basic knowledge of Calculus of several variable
and series for engineering sciences. It also provides students with ability in applying
calculus in practical problems.

- Be able to demonstrate basic concepts of multivariable calculus; be able to
address and solve problems by using multivariable calculus techniques

Numerical methods
Course description: Numerical methods present the approximate solution method of to
six basic problems in technical calculations:
1. Solving equations and systems of nonlinear equations
2. Solving systems of linear equations
3. Calculating interpolation and approximation value by least squares
4. Calculating the approximation of derivatives and integrals
5. Approximate solution of ordinary differential equations
6. Approximate solution of partial differential equations
The methods are presented summary of algorithm, introducing error estimation
formulas and specific ways, omitting complex theoretical proofs. Transferring the
above algorithm to a computer program is mentioned and encouraged toward students
to implement, aiming to simulate real problems commonly encountered in engineering.
Course goals: The course provides students with basic knowledge about numerical
methods for solving mathematical models. Besides, the course equips the students with
the ability to recognize, apply and solve problems involving numerical computation
problems. Finally, the students develop their skills in using a programing language and
the ability to work in groups to solve given practical problems.
Course learning outcomes:
- Be able to demonstrate basic concepts of numerical methods; be able to address
and solve problems by using numerical methods
- Students should be able to state definitions, theorems, formulas precisely
- Students should be able to identify the suitable method for a given problem

Course description: This course aims to provide students with basic knowledge of
probability theory and statistics:
- Methods of collecting and analyzing data by probability software
- Applying parameter estimation questions, evaluating methods in statistics
hypothesis, analyzing variances
- Analyzing the simple correlation of linear regression and the correlation of
multivariate linear regression.
- The program is designed for future engineers. The main focus is applications of
the subject rather than theoretical aspects. Students are supposed to self-study.
- The topics and requirements of projects are subjected to be changed every year.
Course goals: The subject provides basic knowledge of probability and statistics for
students, help students realize the important role of probability and statistics in reality.
Students will be able to collect data and apply some basic statistical methods in their
fields. Finally, students learn teamwork skills.

General Chemistry B
Part 1 – Substance Structure: Consists of chapters 1, 2 and 3. This part provides the
modern knowledge of atomic composition, cycle rules of elements based on their

electron structure of atoms, bonding types in molecules and molecular structure.
Part 2- Basic Theories of chemical processes: Consists of chapters 4 to 9. These
chapters provide students with the basic concepts of foundation theories on chemical
processes: Thermochemistry, entropy and Gibbs free energy, the concept of chemical
equilibrium and factors affecting it, equilibrium types in electrolyte solutions, and
equilibrium in heterogeneous system. The reaction direction and intensity don’t have a
change in oxidation state. The reaction direction and intensity have a change in
oxidation state. Reaction rate and its affecting elements.
Part 1- Laboratory techniques: Learn the rules of safety in the laboratory and practice
of using some basic tools in a chemical laboratory, preparation techniques and titration
of solutions, and calculation of errors.
Part 2- Laboratory practice: Students directly perform experiments to verify the
learned theory and evaluate the results for each particular experiment.
General Physics 1
Course description: The main content covers the following basic knowledge of physics:
- Mechanics: physics of motion, dynamics of particles, systems of particles and
rigid bodies.
- Thermodynamics: thermal physics of gas, laws of thermodynamics and

applications.
- Electricity and magnetism: physics of electric and magnetic phenomena, basic
principles and applications.
Course goals:
- Mastering fundamentals of physics at the university level. At the end of the
course, students will be able to master the basic principles of mechanics,
thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism.

Course description: The main content covers the following basic physics areas:
- Electromagnetic induction.
- Electromagnetic field: phenomenon of electromagnetic induction, physics of
electromagnetic fields and properties of electromagnetic
- waves, Maxwell's equations.
- Oscillation - mechanical wave: physics of oscillation (harmonic oscillation,
damped oscillation, driven oscillation) and sound waves.
- Wave optics: the physics of the wave properties of light, interference and
diffraction.
- Quantum optics: the physics of the particle properties of light, the phenomenon
of thermal radiation and the Compton effect.
- The theory of special relativity: relativistic kinematics and relativistic
dynamics.
- Quantum mechanics: the physics of wave-particle duality of matter, wave

- Atomic physics: atomic structure and motion of electrons in atoms.
- Nuclear physics: nuclear structure and properties of nuclei, nuclear reactions,

Fluid Mechanics
Course description: The course supplies the basic laws of equilibrium and
motion of fluid, the interactions between fluid and moving bodies or with rigid
boundaries. The knowledge in the course is applied to solve the basic problems
of fluid. All the basic phenomena and principles of fluid mechanics are
examined through the experiments in the laboratory.
Fluid Mechanics is a fundamentally engineering course for all engineering
students. The course is designed to equip the students the basic laws of
equilibrium and motion of fluid, the interactions between fluid and moving
bodies or with rigid boundaries. At the same time the course also provides

technical applied to solve basic problems in engineering field such as Civil
Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Water Supply, Electrical System,
Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Automational System,
Aerodynamic Engineering, Environment Engineering ect….
Course description: This course helps students characterize the cash flows associated
with engineering projects and evaluate them from the viewpoints of before-tax and
after-tax cash flow. At the end of this course, students will be able to
- Analyze cash flows to obtain equivalent values for a different time point or time
frame.
- Understand engineering economic decision criteria, including net present value,
internal rate of return, and benefit cost ratio.
- Form alternatives and derive valid cost/benefit estimations from available data.

Applied Mechanics
Course goals: Provide to student knowledge of basic mechanic principles of rigid solid
mechanics and deformation solid mechanics is based on the understanding of a few
basic concepts and on the use of simplified models. This approach makes it possible to
develop all the necessary formulas in a rational and logical manner, and to clearly
indicate the conditions under which they can be safely applied to the analysis and
design of actual engineering structured and machine components. Besides, this subject
provides to student fundamental knowledge of mechanical actuators in engineering.
Course goals: The finite element method (FEM) is used to solve complex problems in
solid mechanics effectively. FEM obtained approximate numerical solutions using a
variety of equations of calculus. This course provides a basic introduction to the FEM
theory and its applications to engineering problems. The use of a commercial program
in a project work will provide the students with an overview of the capabilities and
limitations of such programs
The subject helps students to have the basic skills to exploit common software in
analyzing graphics, geology, geoengineering, environmental geology, field design, oil
and gas drilling and exploitation work towards programming professional problems for
the design of course projects and graduation theses.
Technical Drawing
The subject provides the knowledge for using and geometrical construction with the
drawing instruments, the standard of presentation of engineering drawing; base,
standard, constructing and the skill of analysis, understanding drawing representation;
the tools and method to solve some basic problems on the technical scheme.
Electrical Engineering
1. The first field begins with fundamental definitions, circuit elements including
independent sources, circuit law and theorems and analysis techniques such as node
voltage and mesh current methods. These theorems and methods are initially applied to
DC-resistive circuits and then extended to RLC circuits by the use of complex
impedance. Finally, phasor analysis, sinusoidal steady state, power, power factor and
polyphase circuits are thoroughly covered.
2. The second field that is the chief objective of electric machinery, continues to
be to build a strong foundation in the basic principles of electromechanics and electric
machinery. The emphasis of electric machinery has been on both physical insight and
analytical techniques.
The course deals with the fundamental principles underlying the operation of single-
phase transformer, three-phases induction motor, three-phases synchronous alternator,
DC generator and DC motors. The emphasis is on the physical understanding as the
basis for the derived equivalent machine circuit diagrams.

This course provides background of geoid and earth ellipsoid references; how to
represent the ground by map; the concept of error in measurement; basic knowledge of
tools and measurements in geodesy (angle measurement, length measurement, height
measurement); coordinate and elevation control grids; method of measuring and
drawing detailed maps and topographical sections; how to use maps in design;
Geodetic work in construction layout.
Practicing Serveying
In this course, students can observe and practice the content of surveying subject.
Fundamental Geology
At the end of this course, students can attain the knowledge of the composition and
structure of the Earth in general and Earth's crust in particular, the development of the
great structure (global); continents and oceans; the exogenous and endogenous
processes that alter the Earth surface as well as Earth interior.
This course introduces material components (elements, minerals, and rocks) and the
structure of the Earth (crust, mantle, and core); the endogenous geological processes
(magmatic activities, volcanic, earthquakes, metamorphism ...) are operated primarily
by the movement of plates (plate tectonics) playing an important role in the formation

of the earth topography; and the exogenous geological processes (weathering, mass
wasting, running water, groundwater, sea, wind ...) alter the Earth's surface. Natural
resources including mineral resources and energy resources are also introduced in the
course
Drilling Engineering
This course provides background of drilling technique, drilling equipment of different
geology and hydro geology, well design.
Geostatistics
Geostatistics is a collection of mathematical tools, widely used in every branch of
geosciences. It is used to understand the spatial correlation of data, and interpolate
where data is missing. Its applications can be as diverse as mining geology, petroleum
geology, geochemistry, hydrogeology, hydrology, soil pollution characterization,
meteorology, oceanography, and agriculture. This course will introduce students to the
core theoretical knowledge of geostatistics. Hands-on case studies will provide an
understanding of its applications and highlight the necessity of translating geo-

knowledge into a mathematical/numerical model. Tools such as basic statistics,
variography and estimation methods will be covered during the course
Petrography 1
Supply to students the basic knowledge about the rock (composition of mineral,
structure, texture and formation). Researching issues related to regional geology and
tectonics (lithic tectonics); study of physical petrology for geophysical work
Basic Geophysics
This course provides a basic understanding of the application of geophysical surveying
methods have been and are used on land and off-shore. Each of these methods
measures something that is related to subsurface rocks and their geologic
configurations. It includes gravity method, magnetic method, Electrical methods,
electromagnetic methods and seismic method… This course is aimed to supply
geologists with basic knowledge of geophysics prospection to give them a good start in
understanding geophysics papers, geological interpretation of geophysics data
Basis Hydro-Geomechanics

continuous equation of flow in porous media, complete statement of mathematical
flow model and various types of boundary conditions, uni-directional steady, single-

flows. Introduction to hydrodynamic dispersion. Introduction to multiphase flows.
Geotechnics 1
Describe soils and determine parameters from soil testing to characterize soil
properties, soil strength and soil deformation, classify soils, understand characteristics
of clay minerals, understand the effects of seepage on the stability of the structures,
understand the concept of effective stress, determine total stress, effective stress and
pore water pressure, determine how surface stresses are distributed within a soil mass,
and estimate the bearing capacity and settlement of the structures founded on soil.
Rock Mechanics
The subject provides the basic knowledge of:
- Mechanical properties and classification of intact rocks, rock masses, geologic
discontinuities
- Strength and deformability of rock material and rock mass
- Laboratory testing and in-situ testing to determine the characteristic properties
of rocks
- Considerations of groundwater in rock
- Foundations on rocks, rock slope stability, stabilization and instrumentation.
Geotechnics 2
To provide a basic understanding of geotechnical investigation methods for the
purposes of assessing their suitability for the construction of civil and industrial works,
highway, and hydraulic projects…, from those give the best way in the using of
geological environment.

Engineering Construction
The subject includes the 2 following parts: types of construction works and basic
construction materials. Part 1 provides the knowledge of concept, calculation and
some applications of each type of construction works. Part 2 presents concepts,
requirements and usage purpose of different construction material types as well as
calculation method, producing process and maintenance of construction materials.
The subject has to supply the basic Knowledge: What are the natural reasons which
cause the movement on the surface or in the lithosphere of Earth? What are the kinds
of the geological hazards? What are the methods of estimating, forecasting the
geological hazards
Project of Geotechnics 2
The basic content of the subject includes: Applying the theory of Geotechnical

Engineering 2 to do the assignments on: engineering geology and hydrogeology
survey, drilling work, laboratory work, methods for designing dry drain system for
foundation pits and underground works, adjusting experimental data by statistical and
regression methods, experiments in boreholes, field experiments, Geotechnical
Engineering survey to design and construct all kinds of works such as houses and civil
and industrial works; railway and motorway; irrigation works, etc.
For students to approach reality, they will divide into groups to go on a field trip to
understand more about their expertise.
Foundation of Construction
It provides the basic knowledge of calculation and design of pile foundation, shallow
foundations, retraining wall.
Hydrogeology
The subject has to provide the basic knowledge to answer the question:
+ What are the rules of the formation and the distribution of groundwater?
+ What are the forms of groundwater in the earth's crust?
+ What is formation and change of chemical composition of groundwater?
+ What is thermal water, mineral water, industrial water?

+ Assessing the contamination of underground water and measures to manage
and treat groundwater resources.
It provides the concepts of the physical and mechanical properties of soil and rock
under different conditions; the analysis of the factors affecting these properties and

Graduation Thesis
Graduation thesis aims at summarizing the learned knowledge of mathematics and
natural science, basic knowledge, discipline and major subjects. The content of the
graduation thesis is usually the implementation of a project, a design process that
calculates problems related to professional fields such as Foundations, Geology,
Hydrogeology and Geotechnics by summarizing the knowledge acquired during the
learning process.

13. Instructions for Implementing the Program.
The program is implemented according to the teaching plan, according to the Teaching
Regulations and Academic Regulations of Ho Chi Minh City University of
Technology.
With the above objectives, the training content meets the following 2 requirements:
- Overview: Geotechnical engineers need to be equipped with a knowledge
which is broad enough to be able to grasp the overview of the development
situation of the major they are working in in an interdisciplinary relationship
to be able to use with creativity optimally.
- Specialization: Besides general knowledge, Geotechnical engineers still have
to ensure that they master the necessary knowledge and skills in their major to
be able to carry out specific practical intentions in the major and raise the
level of creation of the new.
During 9 semesters, students of Geological Engineering in general and Geotechnical
Engineering in particular will be trained in contents, including:
- Knowledge of natural sciences such as mathematics, physics, chemistry,
probability and statistics; General technical knowledge, as well as basic
knowledge of earth science and geological processes and apply them to solve
problems related to occupations.
- Skills for status investigation, design and conducting indoor and outdoor
experiments, measurement, sampling, recording as well as analysis,
processing, summarization and data management.
- Master the processes and regulations in investigation, assessment and
monitoring of environmental impacts, exploration and assessment of reserves,
design of mineral exploitation, professional mapping and measurement.
Ability to consult, design, treat foundations, civil and industrial works,
hydroelectricity, irrigation. Assessing potential reserves, designing systems
for exploitation and protection of underground water resources.
- Skills to combine activities with experts in related industries.
- Ability to communicate effectively, listening reading skills, skills of looking
up documents, skills of taking notes, writing, reporting, presentation.
- Having a sense of responsibility and a sense of professional ethics about the
application of advanced technical methods related to the profession in
accordance with the global and social development context.

- Understand the value of learning, acknowledging the demand for lifelong
learning, and their ability to engage in learning, and to advance knowledge
and expertise
- Ability to use modern skills, techniques, technologies and tools needed in
practice in the major. Know how to use specialized software such as
GeoSlope/W, Seep, Arcview, Mapinfo, Envi, Modflow…. Ability to utilize
the internet in the exchange of information and documents
Advanced training ability:
- Postgraduate advanced training in the current era is almost an indispensable
demand for a graduate to be able to really work effectively in a real
environment. It is either done by enterprises or companies where students get a
job in the form of professional training, short-term internships, or organized by
universities and institutes in the form of graduate and doctoral training, etc. .
- From the beginning, Geotechnical Engineering major has also prepared the
direction of post-graduate training with the motto of specializing according to
the practical demands of students and creating all conditions for students to
promote their creative research abilities.
