QUIZ 3 – REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS

1. R134a is used to refrigerate 500 kgs of apple (Cp = 3.59 J/g-‫ۥ‬ °C) from 25°C to 0°C
using an ideal simple vapor compression. If the condenser temperature is 60°C and the
evaporator pressure is 0.2 MPa. Find the COP, the refrigerating effect in TOR, the
compressor work in HP, mass of refrigerant in kg/hr. USE THE TABLES ONLY (12 pts)
2. 1 kg/s of R134a is used in a refrigerator working under an ideal vapor compression
cycle. Its specific volume is 125 L/kg when it enters the compressor. It also has a
density of 1150 g/cc when it leaves the condenser. Find the Heat absorbed in TOR and
the COP. (8 pts)
3. In an actual vapor compression, R134-a enters the evaporator after throttling with a
quality of 20% and a pressure of 0.07 MPa. The pressure in the evaporator drops by 5
kPa and the temperature reaches -20°C before entering the compressor. Refrigerant is
compressed isentropically to 1 MPa. The refrigerant exits the condenser at 0°C. Find
the refrigerating effect, COP cooling, COP heating, compressor work in hp, and the
heat rejected. (20 pts)
4. The temperature in a refrigerator coil is 267 K and that in condenser coil is 295 K.
Assuming that the machine operates on the reversed Carnot cycle, calculate COP
(5pts)
