This is a report in regards with the dietary behavior of Iranians. It is based on the categories provided
at the dietary guide called MyPlate. MyPlate was developed by the United States Department of
Agriculture's Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, and includes proteins, grains, vegetables,
fruits, dairy products, and added ingredients such as oil, salt and sugar.
The report you are reading has been prepared by the means of a survey asking approximately 5,000
Iranians about their dietary habits, to determine the share of each category in an average Iranian plate
as well as to compare it with the worldwide averages.

Foodex Iran conducted a survey (both online and offline) during June 2023, asking

We, as the Foodex Iran team, endeavored to ensure unbiased sampling, and

worked with eight professionals and reached a Lawshe coefficient of above 0.75 ﺑـﺮاي ﻫـﺮ ﺳـﻮال0/75 ﻧﻔﺮ از ﻣﺘﺨﺼﺼﺎن وارﺳﯽ ﮐﺮده و ﺿﺮﯾﺐ ﻻوﺷـﻪ ﺑـﺎﻻي8 آن را ﺑﺎ اﺳﺘﻔﺎده از ﻧﻈﺮ

As mentioned before, the ideal consumption
pattern based on MyPlate depends on the
individual parameters. Still, it generally suggests
an approximation of 30% of grains, 30% of
vegetables, 20% of fruits, and 20% of protein. It

About the Research
In accordance with the mission of improving the Iranian
food culture, Foodex Iran conducted a research study to
evaluate the consumption levels of different food
categories. To carry out the research, a survey was
designed, distributed and analyzed, as well as collecting
and studying domestic and global documents and
articles on Iranian nutrition. Participants were asked to

Bread is the staple food of Iranians. This ancient dietary item has
deep roots in the Iranian history and has always been revered. For
instance, in the inscriptions by Kartir, a prominent Zoroastrian priest
during the Sassanian era, bread is mentioned as a food that will be
gifted to the blessed in paradise.
Given this background about bread, it is not surprising that Iranians
are among the largest consumers of bread in the world. According
to the statements of the advisor to the Minister of Economic Affairs
and Finance, Iranians spend about 82 billion tomans daily on
purchasing bread. This means that on average, each Iranian spends
around 1,000 tomans on bread per day.

country. The very first pasta factory in Iran was launched in 1933.
This small company started producing pasta with just a few simple
machines, to solely serve foreign diplomats and resident embassies.
The term resheteh-e farangi (foreign noodles) originated from this
context. Today, pasta is a familiar and popular food among Iranians.

was a measure to compensate for the iodine deficiency in Iranians.

In our current research, we calculated the per capita consumption of
food products for Iranians and compared it with the MyPlate ﻣﺎ در ﻓﻮدﮐﺲ اﯾﺮان ﺗﻼش ﮐﺮدﯾﻢ ﺗﺎ در اﯾﻦ ﭘﮋوﻫﺶ ﻣﯿﺰان ﺳﺮاﻧﻪي ﻣﺼﺮف ﻫﺮ اﯾﺮاﻧﯽ را
guidelines. What we found was a difference between the آﻧﭽـﻪ درﯾـﺎﻓﺘﯿﻢ ﺗﻔـﺎوت.ﻣﺤﺎﺳﺒﻪ ﮐﺮده و آنرا ﺑﺎ دﺳﺘﻮراﻟﻌﻤﻞ »ﺑﺸﻘﺎب ﻣﻦ« ﻣﻘﺎﯾﺴﻪ ﮐﻨـﯿﻢ

Unraveling the roots of these issues requires separate research, but ﻧﯿﺎز ﺑﻪ ﭘﮋوﻫﺸﯽ ﻣﺠﺰا دارد اﻣﺎ ﻣﺎ ﻣﯽﺧﻮاﺳﺘﯿﻢ ﺗﺎ ﺑﺪاﻧﯿﻢ اﯾﺮاﻧﯿﺎن ﺧﻮد ﺗﺎ ﭼﻪ اﻧﺪازه اﻟﮕـﻮي
we intended to discover to what extent Iranians perceive their own ﺑﻨﺎﺑﺮاﯾﻦ ﻣﺎ در ﭘﺮﺳﺸﯽ از آﻧﺎن ﺧﻮاﺳﺘﯿﻢ ﺑﻪ ﻣـﺎ. ﺳﺎﻟﻢ ﺗﻠﻘﯽ ﻣﯽﮐﻨﻨﺪ،ﻣﺼﺮف ﻏﺬاﯾﯽ ﺧﻮد را
dietary patterns as healthy. Therefore, we asked them in a survey to . ﻧﺘﺎﯾﺞ ﺑﻪ ﺷﺮح زﯾﺮ اﺳﺖ.ﺑﮕﻮﯾﻨﺪ ﺗﺎ ﭼﻪ اﻧﺪازه اﻟﮕﻮي ﺗﻐﺬﯾﻪاي ﺧﻮد را ﺳﺎﻟﻢ ﻣﯽداﻧﻨﺪ
indicate how they perceive the healthiness of their dietary patterns.
The results are as follows:

Understanding what Iranians consider as a healthy diet and where اﯾﻨﮑﻪ اﯾﺮاﻧﯿﺎن ﻣﻌﻨﺎي ﻣﺼﺮف ﺳﺎﻟﻢ را ﭼﻪ ﻣﯽ داﻧﻨﺪ و اﻃﻼﻋـﺎت ﺧـﻮد را درﺑـﺎرهي ﺳـﻼﻣﺖ
