1.0 Introduction To My Dream Computer

The purpose in creating my dream computer is to help use computers for individuals
with special needs, such as hearing impairment. Hearing impairment in older adults
is a major public health issue in developed countries and hearing impairment include
partial or complete hearing loss (Maike A. S. Tahden, Anja Gieseler, 2018). People
who are deaf have very little useful hearing ability and those who have more
functional hearing ability are referred to as hard of hearing. There are few
adaptations available for people with hearing impairments using standard computer
productivity software.

Built-in operating system features found in the control panels of software applications
provide visual displays for system-generated alerts. The increasing use of streaming
media is a concern for those who cannot hear. Content developers rarely include
captioning in video presentations or transcribe the audio into text. These components
include input devices, output devices, a system unit and storage devices.

1.1 Input devices

An input device is any hardware component that allows you to enter data and
instructions into a computer. Popular input devices at present are keyboards, mice,
and pen-based input device but each device has various limitations as follows
(Kiyoshi Agusa, Shinji Nabeshima, 1995 ). Speech-to-text reporters (STTRs) help
people with hearing loss to access spoken information via a laptop or computer.
STTRs use a special keyboard and system called Stenograph to type words
phonetically.

1.2 Output Devices

An output device is any hardware component that conveys information to one or

more people. A hearing aid is a small electronic device that fits in your ear or behind
it. It amplifies sounds so that you are better able to communicate and participate in
everyday activities. A hearing aid has three parts.

Audio induction loops Description

Microphone A remote or companion microphone is a small, wireless and to
bring desired sounds, like a person's voice, directly to the ears.

Amplifier Amplifier are wearable devices that use a microphone to pick up

nearby sounds. They then process this sound and deliver it to a
person's ear at a louder volume.
Speaker Speakers use hearing aid technology to make voices clear and
understandable, even at low volumes.

1.3 System Unit

The system unit is a case that contains electronic components of the computer that
are used to process data. The Computer Controlled Biomedical Auditory Diagnostic
Teaching Unit, "BIADC", performs an audiometry test and displays its results with a
diagnostic aim. It also allows the simulation of different hearing loss profiles via
software.

1.4 Storage

A storage system for storing a hearing aid comprises means for providing power, a
storage space for containing a hearing aid, means through which data from the
hearing aid is received wirelessly and a processing unit for processing data received
from the hearing aid (Larsen, 2009).
