Please submit here your reflective placement report. 


The report should be in your own words as it is about your own personal experience of your
placement year. It should be anything between 4 and 20 pages long (minimum 1500 words not
including title page and contents page) and the main sections of the report should be as follows:  

Introduction to placement Company:


1) Some general background on the company you joined and the sector/activities it is involved
in.

Student role and summary of work:


2) A description/explanation of your role within the company and a summary of the work you
have done over the year.

Description of projects/tasks:
3) A more detailed description of the projects or tasks you have been involved in.  You should
concentrate on the part you played.

Special activities:
4) Details of any other special activities such as visits to other company or customer sites and
company events or training courses, whether technical or social.

Meeting placement aims and objectives:


An assessment of the extent to which you consider you have met the aims and objectives for
5) the placement year (SEE LIST BELOW - please note, these are UH objectives, not individual
employer objectives).  Because of the diversity of placements, you may not have had
experiences which will enable you to meet every objective, but try to show how you have met
most of them. You do not need to comment on any which don't apply to your placement.

Conclusion:
Any general comments/reflections on the placement period as a whole and how it has related
6) to the courses you had studied at the University, stating what you found was most useful from
the courses and what was missing.  Please include here any suggestions you may have for
improvements to the placement process.

 
Aims and objectives for the placement year:  
The experiences offered by different professional training placements are diverse.   However, by
the end of the placement you are expected to have substantially met most or all of the following
objectives: 
- Undertaken problem solving activities in the workplace; 
- Further developed your communication skills; 
- Shown the ability to accept responsibility, work independently, manage your own time and
schedule your work; 
- Understood the constraints of a formal working environment and the benefits of team work; 
- Appreciated the relevance of your academic work and have applied this to new situations; 
- Used new tools and techniques to supplement those covered on your scheme of study; 
- Acquired the experience to understand, discuss and evaluate the professional issues relating to

the use of computer systems in business and industry and the effect    of the systems and
technology on the social environment; 
- Gained an understanding of which final year courses and project topic will provide the best
foundation for your intended career. 
Please note, this report should not be a research paper. It should be a personal reflective report
about your own experience on placement and what you have learnt from it. 
 
Assessment of the report
            Your tutors will assess your final report under the following criteria:
1. Presentation of report
Consideration will be given to:
The presence of a clear table of contents.
The consistent use of appropriate page numbering, and labelling of any diagrams, figures,
tables, appendices.
The consistent use of referencing (if you have included any material directly from published
sources). 
2. Quality of written work
Consideration will be given to:
Grammar
Spelling
The conciseness of description and explanation contained in the report.
The overall structure and coherence of the report i.e. that each of the sub-sections contributes
clearly to larger sections and each of these sections contributes clearly to the overall report.
3. Content
That the written work directly relates to the elements specified above.
4. Self-assessment of the Aims and Objectives of the placement
Consideration will be given to:
An explicit assessment by the placed student of the aims and objectives of the placement, as
listed above and set out in the placement pack.
The quality of the student self-assessment.
