What is Sanitation
Sanitation is Dignity and dignity is a Human Right in terms of the Republic

of South Africa’s Constitution.
Sanitation is defined as the principles and practices relating to the

collection, removal or disposal of human excreta, household waste water
and refuse as they impact upon people and their environment. Good
Sanitation includes appropriate health and hygiene awareness and
behaviour as well as acceptable, affordable and sustainable sanitation

DESLUDGING OF VIP & SEPTIC TANKS
Bakhusele Business Solutions Pty Ltd has special interest in projects that are related to
mentainance of VIP toilets as well as Septic Tanks. As will be seen on the presentation
of our service offering and all attached documents. We have been handling all kinds of
VIP structures that have been erected across the Country, which is from Bricks and
Mortar, pre-cast VIP structures to those made with corrugated iron. The unfortunate
part of these structures is that they are meant to be temporary structures as per the
old DWAF policies and are to be maintained. Our business was introduced due to this
problem.

The challenges posed by Sanitation
• Sanitation continues to being a huge challenge to many communities and is

continuing to be a threat to lives of many people.
• Common Diseases caused by poor Sanitation
The water-borne diseases, typhoid, cholera, and diarrhea, Tuberculosis, Anthrax,

Diphtheria, Ophthalmic etc. are caused by vegetative, non-spore forming bacteria

•We drain/suction ( disludge ) all full toilets with honey suckers – this is for VIPs,
normal Pit toilets ,Septic tanks, Sewer Networks Main holes as well as Over
Capacitated sewer systems/networks where applicable.
•Toilets which are not flushing have a very bad smell whether they are full or not and
they need special treatment .We treat this toilets with a chemical made of chloride of
lime – it is a healthy chemical that reduces bacteria and kills bad smell.
•We have OVER 8 Honey Sucker Trucks, designed for the provision of this service and
can access any settlement with long size pipes ;

1. The “6” Step Process in Drainage / Suctioning of VIP Toilets
Bakhusele undertake and commit to follow the following steps in the process of the
Disludging of VIP toilets. The different Teams indicated are a clear guide or explanation
of the process that Takitsi Trading will follows;
a. Inspection & Education Team: This is the first step, all VIP toilets are inspected
in terms of accessibility, location, structural defects and contents. Where VIP toilets
are misused by households, education take place there and then. All households
need to be trained – properly informed and educated about the care for pits and
that general waste should be disposed of in an alternative suitable manner whilst
where VIPs contents are found to be hard a water tanker is arranged to pour water
first and dilute with contents for easy drainage. This Team also examines the VIP
toilets and note all defects for reporting purposes and also to advise the Honey
sucker team of challenges like where drainage should take place by removing the
toilet seat or removing a cover slab from behind the pit.

b. The General Waste Removal Team: This is the Team that removes unacceptable contents like
Clothes and Buckets, etc. This Team shall always be equipped with rods with hooks, long
handled forks, or other suitable tools to remove unacceptable waste that can get caught up in
the suction hoses;
c. The Honey Sucker Team: This is a Team that does the suctioning/drainage using appropriate
pipes in terms of size and length, i.e. 30 x 100 mm. The pipes should be handled well to avoid
spillage of waste being drained. It is of critical importance to ensure that the sizes of the pipes
are correct. The Truck Driver is responsible for ensuring that the pipe is correct and is also well
stored around the truck before and after drainage. Any spillages caused by negligent drivers may
lead to disciplinary action being taken to the Truck Driver and his Team.
d. Chemical Application Team: The Chemical is not meant for consumption by any Human – all
Employees to ensure that this chemical is applied in all VIP toilets drained accordingly to control
bacteria and bad smell. All Household are taught on the purpose of the use of the Chemical;

e. Administration Team: All work done need to be recorded correctly, this is the last
process in the drainage of VIP Toilets (see annexure G) an example. All information
required from households should be completed to ensure that correct and reliable
MI is left to the Municipality or Local Government.
f. Household Education: This Team use a Health and Education poster – see on
attached here and on “Annexure G” to educate Families on Health and Hygiene issues
as well as the correct use of the VIP toilets for its sustainability.

People – Job Creation
The project is driven by local people at Ward Level: we intend to appoint

people at the specific wards to assist with the handling of drainage pipes as
well as doing various work as detailed further below – example, such as
Health and Hygiene education. With our experience, we have found that
when local people are the ones doing the work and they see all general waste
found on the VIP pit latrines, they are the one to easily educate the
community Members together with the CLO.
We provide training/induction to all new employees on our process – give

training on Health and Safety, the health and safety plan – Environmental
laws and Municipal by laws related this kind of work. All our employees are
provided with protective clothing as follows – hand gloves, overalls, safety
boots, etc.
