Offshore crane operation by Javed Kamal ( SA 8423783

DP VESSEL to platform operation

Wind speed limit is less than 35knots (Aramco GI 7.024)

Vessel to boat operation (cargo and personal transferring Aramco GI 7.024/7.027)

As per GI 7.024 section 9.2 critical lift plan is required for all critical lift or for a lift when
at least one vessel is afloat and the sea extends sea state 3.5(wind speed not more
than 32km/hr 20mph / 10mps or 17knots)

Officer and the crane operator must compare the date before starting the job.
Based on forecast observed weather and operations limit.

Risk to consider

Wind Speed (forecast sensor, wind limit

Sea state (Assessments, common sense, limits)

Thunder (stop crane immediately)

The most important factors to be considered is Communication. Radio channel for

crane operation must be agreed between all involved. Assign certified Banksman or
Rigger (Aramco Rigger 1/2/3

Aramco Rigger duty is to provide clear signal and lift instructions by best
communication mean available. In offshore Radio is mostly used. Rigger should use
Radio communications in conjunction with the hard signals whenever possible. The
Aramco or third party designated Rigger or blanks man must wear high visibility vest
so that crane operator can immediately identify the person. The Aramco Rigger is
advised to use hand signal as well to make sure what is said in the radio.

Risk to consider

Inadequate Communion (provide Radios)

misunderstanding (Repeat order to confirm)

Language (speak English only and use hand signal)

Who will consider the available power for crane? The chief, Second or third Eng. will
make sure the available power.

Risk to consider

Loss of power - blackout (Ask Engineer

Pre-Use checklist.

Each Saudi Aramco certified crane operator shall perform a daily pre operation
safety inspection checklist prior to his crane and load limit using Saudi Aramco form
SA 9466. Crane need to be inspected very time before it is used

Risk to Consider

Crane failure (check all above

Falling object (visual inspection of crane interior

Rigger can see something which operator can't see. wire drum install above the
operator cabin

The lifting team certification as per Saudi Aramco assign capacity. Rigger 1 can lift
all type of load and also handle the critical lift. the lifting plan is requiring for all
critical lifting. Rigger one or assign Rigger 2/3 will give clear signal along with radio
communication.

Risk considers

Crane contact with obstruction (Rigger/Banksman

Restricted view (Rigger

Blind spot (Rigger

Remembering that operator will only follow the Aramco certified signal and only
approved person is allowed to give signal.

Rigger will also pay attention to the boom and block. Always watch the blocks their
moment and distance from each other.

Risk to consider

(Rigger watch the wire when possible

Block damage (watch the block

Hydraulic oil leak (oil pressure gauge visual)

Rigger will make sure and check the SWL of the hook and attached sling then
compare it to the applied load. Make sure All the lofting gear is in good condition

(Sling shackle etc)

All attached device (rings, links, coupling pin etc) Shall be selected to provide
capacity equal or greater than sling used. check the safety pin on the shackles.

Risk to consider

Certification, colour coding, visual inspection

Wrong Rigging (competency of lifting team

Lost time (crew training and experience

The crane operator shall always sight on cargo or other type of heavy lift like Jacket
frame’s structure, top side, Heli pad etc. blind lift should be avoided. Radio
communication is preferred. Crane operator will not be rush especially in heavy
lifting like topside installation of jacket. He will not speed on request in such lifting.
tag line should be attached to the lifted object no matter how small or light it is.
Always keep a safe distance and use a hook to reach the tagline. when lifting from
other vessel and other boat, operator will evaluate if vessel can hold position under
the crane. specially care require for jacket lifting and topside. all the paper work like
Saudi Aramco Rigger 1 will prepared the lifting plan, other document like JSA and
Risk assessment. all critical lift required lifting plan approved by Rigger 1. Heavy Lift
lifting by the Monster like Subsea7 seven Borealis, Seven champions NPCC DLS 4000,
2000 MACDORMENT DLV 200.

Make sure the following when lifting jacket and top side in offshore

The vessel should be stationary

The vessel must be DP or DP2

The perfect weather conditions

Only the authorized and essential person should be on deck in case of heavy lifting.
operator must know the load of heavy lifting. All the crane should have load charts
in the cabs stating lift capacity based on boom length, attachment, boom angel
outrigger configuration radius and lift quadrant

Risk to consider

Incorrect hooking (competent crane operator and lifting team)

Crushed by cargo or heavy lifting (training, planning of lift, Supervision)

Cargo swinging (weather, tagline, competent crane operator

Falling object (check heavy lift before lift)

Taglines (no knots. not around the hand)
