Functions of education in society

From the moment a child starts to grow, his/her education begins with the
introduction of academic lessons. Education is more than the simple knowledge of
facts; it has become one of the influential institutions that socializes us to our
society. We learn cultural expectations and norms, which are reinforced by our
teachers, our textbooks, and our classmates.
Education as a socializing institution is responsible for the transmission of
knowledge, skills and cultural values within a formally organized structure.

TYPES OF EDUCATION

1. Formal Education- describes the learning of academic facts and concepts

through a formal curriculum. Arising from the tutelage of ancient Greek
thinkers, centuries of scholars have examined topics through formalized
methods of learning.
2. Informal Education – describes learning about cultural values, norms, and
expected behaviors by participating in a society. This type of learning
experience is usually facilitated by parents, relatives, and others in our
community. Our earliest learning experience generally at home where we
were taught on dressing up, food preparation performs regular life routines
like cooking and shopping and personal hygiene.
3. Non- formal Education- it is a process of learning derived from an
organized and systematic education activity working either separately or as
a special feature of a formal education institutions. It’s an educational
process that last a lifetime and has no age limit.

The end goal of education is to create responsible, productive and socially

contributing citizens people who can provide for their own families as well as
contribute to their communities. This can be seen in the Philippine context though
the curriculum changes it implements in the educational system. In 2023, the
Department of Education has embarked on a curriculum reform dubbed as K to 12

 Abraham Maslow (1908-1970)- was an American psychologist who created a
theory of psychological health based on fulfilling inborn human needs, from
the most basic to the most sophisticated, culminating in self- actualization.

 Self- actualization is described by Abraham Maslow as a persons need to be

and do that for which the person has a vocation. It is his calling, a full
expression of his or her creative potential. It is to be autonomous and fully-
functioning. If these needs are not met it can have a tremendous effect on
individuals, person feels restless and frustrated even if successful in other
respects. One reason that a person does not move through the needs to self-
actualization is because of the hindrances placed in their way by society. For
example, education can act to inhibit a person’s potential.

 Emphasized that education functions to fulfill the entire individual.
Education must discover the innate, biologically endowed potentials of each
child and then develop these potentials to their fullest extent. Education
therefore, is supposed to allow each individual to self- actualize.
