Part 1 – Employee Engagement (Syllabus 3)


(100 marks/worth 25% of grade)

Purpose: HR professionals must know how to cultivate employee engagement and understand
how it differs from employee satisfaction. They are often called to assist in dealing with both
employee engagement and satisfaction issues in the workplace.

Tasks:

1.1 Research to define and differentiate between the two terms: Employee Engagement and
Employee Satisfaction. Use an example to demonstrate your understanding of each term.
(15 marks)

• Explain what Claire means by a ‘round wheel approach’. Describe one round
wheel approach you believe your organization should start using (or is using) to
increase employee engagement in your workplace and why it would work.
(10 marks)
• Explain what Claire means by a ‘square wheel approach’. Describe one square
wheel approach your employer (or an employer you are familiar with) uses to
increase employee engagement in the workplace and why it isn’t effective.
(10 marks)
• Briefly discuss (250 words or 1 page) one thing that resonated with you regarding
employee engagement from this TedTalk – either positive or negative and how
you might ‘take this with you’ in your future work life. (15 marks)

Assume that you are the HR Generalist at an organization that has been using the X
Model for about a year now. Sloan is a 24-year-old employee who joined the company 7
months ago and has completed her probationary period. She works as an Accounts
Receivable Clerk in the accounting department of 6 employees. Everyone works 8:30-
4:30 Mon- Fri. Despite a four-week training period and frequent follow-up sessions with
her manager, Sloan makes frequent mistakes which require redoing some work to correct
errors.

In general, Sloan’s co-workers like her and she occasionally goes out for drinks after
work Thursday nights with the team. She also just joined the company hockey team.
However, Sloan has come to work late four times in the past two weeks and her
coworkers are starting to complain about both the tardiness and having to fix her mistakes
or deal with angry customers whose payments weren’t posted correctly to their accounts.

When Sloan’s manager, Carol spoke with Sloan about her recent lateness, Sloan replied:
“Well, I guess I’m just not a morning person.” Carol came to you to ask for advice on
what to do about Sloan.

First, identify which group you believe Sloan fits into and why you think this: (5 marks)
• The Engaged/High Performers
• Honeymooners/Hamsters
• Crash & Burners/ “Quit & Stay”
• Disengaged
• Almost Engaged/Decent Performers

Based on your textbook assigned readings and any research you want to do, discuss how
each of the following approaches could be used by Carol to help with Sloan’s issues:

Is there anything you need to know about Sloan and her situation before deciding on the
best approach to use? (5 marks)
