The Company: Shawarma Shack

In this topic, we are going to answer the questions, What? Where? When? Why?
Who? And How? We are going to discuss the different factors that are related to the given
topic, such as What is Shawarma Shack? When and Where Shawarma Shack started? Who are
the people that established Shawarma Shack? And How does Shawarma Shack work in the
market?

WHAT IS SHAWARMA? WHERE IT WAS STARTED?

Before we head on to the main topic,
let us identify first the meaning of
“Shawarma” and where it was started.
Shawarma is a popular dish made in Middle
East. Shawarma was started in 18th or 19th
century and was originated in Ottoman
Empire or what we called in the modern day,
Turkey. Shawarma was also spelled
“shawurma” or “shawerma”, which means
“turning” in Arabic. The reason why it is called “turning”, it is because of the way of cooking.
We all know and we witnessed, that the proper way of cooking the meat in Shawarma is by
turning it in a fire, it is to balance the quality of cooking in the meat. Shawarma are consists
of spiced cut meats, with vegetables, and wrapped it in cone-like shaped bread, or what they
called “pita bread”.
From the popularity of Shawarma in the Middle East, it was also reached the Western
Europe part of the world. The Turkish immigrants introduced the Shawarma to the different
countries, like in Greece, Germany and The Netherlands. This was started last 1920, where
Armenians and Turks decided to build a small eateries that serves Shawarma. Due to the
popularity of Shawarma in the Middle East and Western Europe, it finally came and reached
the Asian Countries. This is the reason why we also have an idea about the Shawarma. I think
the reason why Shawarma became popular in the Philippines is because; Filipinos loved an

easy to cook or ready to eat foods. We loved those foods that is easy to bring, or that helps
us to feel convenient, whether in school, park, mall or in any establishments in our country.
If we are going to observe, Shawarma became popular in our country. This product
can be seen either in the mall, in the street or in any public places. Many people tried to start
their business by using this product, and some big companies remain in the market by still
selling and using this product which is Shawarma. We know different companies that sell
Shawarma, and one of those popular companies is the company has a signature line “Buy one
Take one Forever, dahil Mas Masaya ‘Pag Dalawa.” A company that offers Buy-1-Take-1
Shawarma, this was the none other than “Shawarma Shack.”

HISTORY OF SHAWARMA SHACK

Shawarma Shack is the First and the Original

Buy-1-Take-1 Shawarma in the Philippines.
Shawarma Shack started last February 2015 in
Tutuban Night Market in Divisoria, and they
only had a food cart back then. This business
was established by Mr. Walther Uzi Buenavista
with the help of his girlfriend but now his wife,
Mrs. Patricia Buenavista. During that time, Mr.
and Mrs. Buenavista only cooked and prepared
the meats, the bread and other ingredients for the product in their house, and they will bring
it to their place in Tutuban Night Market. As per Mr. Buenavista, he said that the place where
they sell their product was only for rent and it was a ready-to-build-tent. He also shared that
the place in Tutuban is a first-come-first-serve basis. That is why they needed to be there
before 7pm, because 7pm to 8pm was the time, where the place was very crowded because
of the people there. In short, this was what we called “peak hours.” He also shared that after
they sell all the products around 12 midnight, he will directly go to Balintawak to buy the
ingredients for Shawarma.

2|Page
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

In addition to this, for them to expand the business, what Mr. Buenavista did, he
contacted all the organization’s president in different schools to make a contract, that
everytime the school will launch an event, the school will allow Shawarma Shack to build a
stall or cart there, and sell their product. Mr. Buenavista said, he contacted more than 1000’s
of Organization’s President, but only more than 20 people just replied. He used this
opportunity to build more branches of Shawarma Shack. Everytime they allowed selling their
product in a school event, they gain profit to open another branch of Shawarma Shack,
because the profit that they can gain in one event is equivalent to open a new stall. They
worked-out the process of selling in Tutuban Night Market every night, and racketeering in
school events every morning. When Mr. Buenavista has enough savings, he decided to try
entering in supermalls, at first his wife doesn’t agree to this because the perspective of his
wife, 70,000 pesos is not enough in entering in a supermalls, but Mr. Buenavista was very
diligent. Mr. Buenavista tried many times and he got rejected 12 times. On his 13 th try, finally,
they already achieved their dream and it was launched in SM North Edsa.
At first, their place in Supermalls did not hit, they did not meet their sales. This is the
time where they need to think of something unique and something that can help to survive
their business. This is where buy-one-take-one finally launched. Mr. Buenavista thinks that

3|Page
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

this is the best Marketing Strategy that they can make during that time. The only purpose of
this strategy is to gain only the capital, but after that time, they noticed that they still gain
profit, but it is not the same as before they launched their strategy. Mr. and Mrs. Buenavista
decided to continue their business. They also realize that it is not about how much is the
income per person, but it is more on, those little profits that they get from one customer
resulted to a big impact for the business when it was combined. After all of these sacrifices,
they finally found their best strategy to survive in the market. This strategy is out of being
diligent, passionate and being dedicated to their company. This strategy gives them a
successful journey and makes them an established food company in the Philippines.

• In February 2015, they launched “The Shawarma Shack” Facebook page.

• In February 2016, they got they first entry in SM Malls: SM North Edsa
• In October 2016, they have their first store outside Metro Manila: SM Dasmarinas
• In April 2018, they achieved their 100th store and this was opened in Ayala Legazpi, a
franchise outlet.
• In May 2018, they have their first store in Visayas: Elizabeth Mall Cebu
• In August 2018, they have their first store in Mindanao: Zamboanga
• In March 2019, they received an award which is the “The Millennial Club Award”
• In March 2019, same month where they received “The Millennial Club Award”, they
also reached 400 stores.

THE FOUNDER OF SHAWARMA SHACK

Like many businesses who have their own
developer and establisher, Shawarma Shack has
its own establisher. Mr. Walther Uzi Buenavista is
the mastermind, the brain and the heart of
Shawarma Shack. Mr. Buenavista was only 25
years old when he decided to start his own
business. He launched Shawarma Shack when he
was 26 years old. Aside from being known as a
successful entrepreneur, he also has his own
journey, a story behind his success. A journey that
challenged him, that disappoints and discouraged
him. Way back when he was in college, his ultimate hobby is to play basketball and it was his
dream. His dream is to become a basketball player, but because of his height, he often
rejected. Mr. Buenavista entered different universities, 4 times, and this became the reason,
so that he could become a first year college student over and over again. He tried 4 times to
enter in a basketball team, but he was rejected, until such time he felt frustration, get tired
and give up his own dream. Nothing happened on his dream that he was trying to reach. Aside
from being unlucky in reaching his dream, he also encountered rejections in work. He tried to
apply in different companies, like in BPO companies but he was not lucky and got rejected.
Those experiences makes him diligent and dedicated, and made him realized that there are
certain things in our life that we really wanted, but not meant for us, and make him believe
that God has more beautiful and better plan for him.
Mr. Buenavista decides to start his own business when he was 25 years old, and he
decided to launch it when he was 26 years old with a starting capital of 50,000 pesos, and this
business is Shawarma Shack. What inspires him to start this business is because, Shawarma is
his favorite snack. When he was in college, while he was in the middle of his travel, he always
seen a store or stall selling Shawarma. He saved his money to buy at least one Shawarma per
month. This is the main reason why he chose to start this kind of business. At first, he also
experienced rejections, discouragements, disappointments and other negative treatments

while pursuing this dream, but he didn’t look at it, instead he used this as a stepping stone to
achieve his dreams. The dedication and passion of Mr. Buenavista resulted to a great success,
not just for him, but for his company.

A MISSION AND VISION OF SHAWARMA SHACK

MISSION
1. “Our Company is dedicated to serve our delicious, and fresh Mediterranean cuisine
with our signature twist of Filipino flavors at great price points that our customers can
happily consume.”
The ultimate goal of Mr. Buenavista was to
bring the delicious and classic Mediterranean
snack to his fellow Filipino citizen with an
affordable price. Mr. Buenavista created an own
Filipino version of Shawarma and made a strategy
that provides a less price. If we are going to
observe Shawarma Shack, until now they
maintain the deliciousness of the product and at
the same time with an affordable price. Through to his proper way of managing and leading
the company, the company still managed to accomplish their Mission to his co-Filipino citizen.
Aside from this idea, he also wanted to put up branches in different locations in our country.
That is why, when they are just starting their business, he really tried to put up another stall
after they sell their products in school events. Even though Shawarma Shack, has a lot of
branches in our country, Mr. Buenavista always make sure that the taste of his products are
always on the standard taste. What he did was he also ate the product of his competitors. I
think, in this way he got his own idea, realization and strategy of maintaining his company in
the market.

2. “Our Company, through its business model, aims to provide employment, training and
education, and promote entrepreneurship for the enterprising Filipino.”

6|Page
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

Aside from the company’s mission which is to serve a quality and affordable Shawarma
to his fellow Filipino. They also has another mission, which is to become a business model in
the business industry, by giving employment, conducting trainings and education and also by
promoting entrepreneurship for the Filipino Enterprises. The main reason why Mr. Buenavista
initiates the franchise chain, it is to help his compatriot to survive from the effect of pandemic.
This idea was not only focused for the business owners to earn profit, but aside from that, it
is to open an opportunity or employment for our fellow-Filipino who lost their jobs during
pandemic. Another thing aside from helping is also to inspire other millennial entrepreneurs
to pursue their dream. His life and his journey was a living testimony that there is something
that you can achieve or prove even though you are at your young age. Your age cannot limit
what you can do in life.
Shawarma Shack experienced challenges and obstacle along their way. Some people
were also felt disappointed in Shawarma Shack. They also felt that their customers and other
people, no longer loved them. They also came to a point where they almost gave up, but,
Shawarma Shack still fighting and striving to keep these missions, because they knew that it
is not only for the credibility of their company, but most especially, because of their love and
concern for our society and for our fellow-Filipino citizen.
VISION
1. “Our Company envisages the business to maintain the highest standards of quality in
our products and services, strengthening our core capabilities to become the industry
benchmark domestically, and elevate the Brand to participate in regional markets
overseas.”
2. “Our Company, will nurture the “SHAWARMA SHACK” brand legacy as it continues to
delight its consumers and empower the entrepreneurial spirit of many Filipinos both
here and abroad.”
3. “Our Company will help in nation-building by becoming a reputable organization to
develop globally-competitive, and competent Filipino foodservice professionals.”
It will be hard for a company to become successful if they don’t have a goal. As
business owner, you don’t have any control to the possible situations or problems that your
company may experience, but you have control on how you are going to response to it. You

7|Page
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

can plan the future, but you need to be ready in changes and in outcomes. Same with all the
successful companies, they just started in dreaming and planning. They don’t have assurance
if these plans will become successful or not. Before they become successful, they take a risk,
they work and they strive to achieve their goal. Shawarma Shack is one of those companies
who started in dreaming and planning, but now they are one of the most successful
companies in the Philippines. They started in creating plans for the business and then it
became plans for the bigger picture of the future. At first, they felt hesitant if their plans will
be successful, but they fought and strived to achieve their dreams. And now that they are
already successful, they extend their hope to reach not just their own country, but also to
participate in Regional Markets Overseas. In this case, it can be a success and achievement
not only for the company but also for the Philippines. If Shawarma Shack already achieved
their goal, which is to enter in markets overseas. After that, Shawarma Shack will create legacy
and can inspire the young Filipino people or young entrepreneurs to pursue their dream in
both local and abroad because of what they had experienced. Aside from it, in our current
situation in the business industry, competition really increased, and those companies create
their own strategy to compete in the market. Thus competitions were increased, it also
helped the company to strive and think harder to maintain their business in the market. Many
people think that competition is not healthy in the business industry. They take it as a source
of quarrel between companies, but the truth is, competition really helped a lot in the business
industry. It may be a threat for every company, but it is a way for the organization to think
harder and deeper, on how they can maintain their products or service in the market.
Acknowledging competition in this industry is necessary.
ACHIEVEMENTS OF SHAWARMA SHACK
Achievements are important for a company. It describes your success and
accomplishments in the business industry. Those plaques, medals, certificates, trophies and
other recognitions have a lot of help to promote your company in this industry. Sometimes,
this is the reason why the company became threat to other companies. Yet, we need to realize
that aside from those recognitions, what really matters is the heart of a company to serve the
people in their society. A true success of a business didn’t show when you have hundreds of
trophies or medals, but success really shows when hundreds of people love and admire your

8|Page
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

company, your product or your services and most especially, you as the leader of the
company, just like Shawarma Shack. Mr. Buenavista was, and still actively participating in
different advocacies and programs that focuses on the growth potential of small to medium
enterprises, and also to those start-ups enterprises. He participated in these organizations,
Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), Philippine Retailers Association (PRA)

Shawarma Shack given by the different organizations. In this matter, those organizations
acknowledge the presence and dedication of Shawarma Shack in the business industry.

Aside from these recognitions, Shawarma Shack also received achievements that are
not related to business industry, but more on related to our society. Mr. Buenavista led his
team which is the Shawarma Shack Relief Operation to conduct a Relief Operation. The
purpose of this was to help our compatriot to survive from the effect of the typhoon. Example
of this was during the Typhoon Paeng, many of our co-Filipinos were affected by this typhoon.
Last October 29, Typhoon Paeng made a landfall to CALABARZON, and it was created a heavy
rainfall. One of the affected areas was San Pedro Laguna, wherein 33 Barangays are affected.
Due to this situation, Mr. Buenavista coordinated with the San Pedro’s local government and
Philippine Coast Guard to distribute relief goods to the affected areas. Aside from San Pedro
Laguna, Noveleta Cavite was also affected by this typhoon. Mr. Buenavista with the help of
his team and the Philippine Coast Guard, they also bring and distributed some relief goods in
this area. Typhoon Paeng was not the only Typhoon where Mr. Buenavista reached an effort
to help, but also in Typhoon Odette and Typhoon Maring. This is the reason why Mr.
Buenavista received different recognitions. It is because of his love, concern and kindness to
our kababayans. And there are his awards;

• Last September 16, 2022, The CEO of Shawarma Shack which is Mr. Walther
Buenavista received a plaque given by The Philippine Coast Guard Maritime Security

Despite of all of these successes, Mr. Buenavista still acknowledging the importance
of education and the impact of this in his life and in his career. That is why Mr. Buenavista
pursued the course that is related to his current field, which is Business Administration
Degree, Major in Human Resources Management at San Pedro College of Business
Administration. By doing this so, we can simply see the humbleness in him. He knows that his
knowledge is not yet enough and he can still learn more. We know that Human Resource
Management focuses on handling people, or in short this course is more related to people.
We can say that he loves interacting with people, and as a result, we can conclude that he
loves his employees; he loves the people working for him, and working for his company. In
supporting this statement, by all of the helped he has given to all our kababayans, we can
really say that he has a big heart for others.
PROCESS OF FRANCHISING
One of the easiest ways to expand your business is by doing a franchising. Franchising
is a method of distribution in which the business owner (the franchisor) allows an individual
or group of individuals to have the right to manage a business by using the franchisor’s brand
name, products or services, or the whole process in the business system. In this case, more
people will be recognized your products, your services or the name of your business. The
Shawarma Shack is under of this system. Many people tried to franchise Shawarma Shack but
it was not easy to do, because franchising requires an organized process, same on how
Shawarma Shack managed their franchising method.
When Shawarma Shack was starting out, they focused on expanding their business by
using their profit to open a new stall in other location. While doing this strategy, they reached
80 branches. Then, they get as endorsers and make a contract with a most popular love team
in the Philippines, which are Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla. After Shawarma Shack
getting these two popular people in our country, 8 months before the year 2018 ends, they
reached 300 branches, and by March 2019, they reached 400 stores and as of now, they have
over 700 franchised outlets in the Philippines. Their hard works really paid off, and their
strategy which is to get Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla as their endorser has a lot of
impact to their company. Many people will be confused why KathNiel accept this
endorsement; the main reason is because of the quality of the product given by Shawarma

12 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

Shack. Both of them loved the Shawarma in Shawarma Shack. As per Daniel Padilla, as
endorser, he will not risk their credibility, that’s why he made sure that whatever they say
during commercials or interview, will be the same to what people may experience if they will
eat the product of Shawarma Shack.
Now, let us know the processes of Franchising Shawarma Shack;
1. SUBMIT APPLICATION AND REQUIREMENTS
- The first one is the submission of your application and requirements. In any
company, it is really important to submit the application that consists your name,
address, phone number, email address and copy of your valid ID’s, or in short,
application that tells about the important details about you. Why do you think
Valid ID’s are important? It is for the company to make sure if you are really
interested or trustworthy. Some people take advantages to big companies and
scammed them, and aside from it, it is for them to make sure your identity. Some
of the requirements of Shawarma Shack aside from these important information’s
about yourself, is the space or location. Shawarma Shack required at least 4 square
meters or 2 meters x 2 meters for your location. Franchisee is the one who manage
and taking care of with regards to the location. Another thing, with regards to the
man power, Franchisee is required to hire at least 2 to 3 crews per store.
2. SITE INSPECTION AND APPROVAL
- We all know that location is really important for a business. Even though you
provide a good quality products or services if your location is not in good condition
it will be useless. That is the reason why good location is necessary. For the second
process, Shawarma Shack will be having Site Inspection and Approval. It is to make
sure that the products will be easily consumed. Don’t get mad or take it negative
if your chosen location will not be approved, it is for you sake. The company just
wants to make sure that you will earn profit once you become their franchisee. .
3. GRANT MEETING
- After the submission of application and requirements, and if the location is also
settled, the franchisee will get a notice that they will be have a meeting with the
franchisor or the business owner. In this time, the business owner and the business

13 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

franchisee will be tackling the different matters about the business. For example,
the inclusions in Franchise Package, the Payment, the contract and other
important matters connected to business. If everything is okay, then we will go to
the 4th process, which is the Contract Signing and Payment.
4. CONTRACT SIGNING AND PAYMENT
- When everything is settled and explained, this is the time where papers that
include all the important details, include the signatures of the franchisor and the
franchisee will be given to both business owners and business franchisee for their
copy. In short, this is the time where legalities are process and talked about. The
signature that comes from the Franchisor and the Franchisee is a sign that the deal
is already close and they became partner for the business.
5. PREPARATION TO OPENING
- After all the discussions, explanations and exchanged of conversations. When
everything is finally okay, this is the time where the Franchisee, with the help of
Franchisor will be preparing for the opening of the business. What are the things
they need to prepare? The decorations, the equipments, the ingredients for the
product, the crew also need to prepare themselves because of the possible
quantity of the customers, and most especially, you as a Franchisee you need to
prepare yourself, not only for the opening day, but the rest of the years that you
are going to manage your business.
6. OPENING DAY
- This is the time you will feel the pressure, you will be overwhelmed by things and
situations happening in you, and for you to know, that emotion that you feel is
okay. You need to embrace your season that you have your own business and

FEASIBILITY STUDY
Intense competition in the Market is one of the challenges that each business
considers before conducting operations to prosper their business. One of the best ways to
check the success of a business plan is to have a feasibility study. A feasibility study is simply
an assessment of the practicality of a proposed project plan or method. This is done by
analyzing technical, economic, legal, operational, and time feasibility factors (Project
Management, 2021). It answers the question “Is the plan feasible?” The goal of a feasibility
analysis also referred to as a feasibility study, is to weigh the advantages and disadvantages
of a current or proposed business fairly and logically, potential risks, the resources needed to
carry out operations, and ultimately the likelihood that the venture will succeed (Vadapalli).
It provides a clear picture of the budget needed and the potential returns. A feasibility study
is not only limited to estimating financial gains. Depending on the project's target audience
and the sector to which it belongs, it may be used for additional purposes.
A well-organized and carried-out feasibility analysis will give a detailed history of the
company or venture, a thorough analysis of the product, financial records, operational
characteristics, specifics of the market research, legal guidelines, tax information, and other
financial data. As the study provides a preliminary exploration of a proposed project it
includes the merits and viability of the independent assessment from the technical, economic,
legal, and scheduling requirements of an entity. Decision-makers can then use this data to
determine whether to move forward with the project or not. It cannot be simple to determine
whether or not a given project is worthwhile pursuing without a feasibility review.
Clear enough, the coverage of a Feasibility Review is broad as a business venture. The
credibility of the study for potential investors and lending institutions is hence greatly
influenced by perceived objectivity. To understand each parameter of the said review, there
are five (5) types of Feasibility review that can be considered as challenges in business. These
are the Technical, Operational, Economic, Legal requirements, and Scheduling Requirements
Feasibility study.

TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY
The technical resources that the organization has access to are the main focus of this
assessment. Simplilearn claims that it aids businesses in determining whether their technical
resources are adequate and whether their technical staff is qualified to turn their concepts
into functional solutions. It answers the question “Do we have, or can we create the
technology to do this?” The assessment of the proposed system's technical requirements,
including its hardware, software, and other components, is part of the technical feasibility
process. According to Indeed, the process of working out how you're going to manufacture
your good or service to see if it's feasible for your business is another term for it. You must
plan every aspect of your business operations before launching your offerings, starting with
where you will get your production materials and ending with how you will keep track of sales.
You can identify potential difficulties and come up with solutions by considering all the
logistics of this process. By outlining all of this beforehand, you can determine a process that
works for your team and know what to anticipate during it. You can deliver your goods to
clients more successfully if you have a well-thought-out plan.
Application: Technical Feasibility Review for Shawarma Shack
In 2022, Manila Bulletin featured Shawarma Shack quoted “Shawarma Shack takes
pride in being at the forefront of the sector's technological advancements in food
preparation, innovation, storage and sanitation, paving their way even through the
pandemic.” The award was directly received by Walther Uzi Buenavista, president, and chief
executive officer of Shawarma Shack. Buenavista also affirmed they were using modern food
lab tat operates with advanced food facility using smart technology.
What makes Shawarma Shack one of the most technologically advanced food
preparation establishments? In order to establish a Shawarma business, you would need to
have machines, equipment, utensils, stall, people of labor, effective logistics operation, etc.
Going back in 2015 to when the business has started, below are the list of the equipment the
business used.

made chopping and mincing much easier.

• Deep Fryer
Deep fryers, whether made for indoor or
outdoor use, allow you to cook food in deep oils or
fats that have been cooked to high degrees. They
swiftly and easily prepare dishes like fish, French fries,
and crispy chicken fingers.

• Freezer

A freezer's primary function is to retain food

at a cool temperature while maintaining its
flavor, texture, and freshness.

• Chiller

Food is quickly cooled at low

temperatures using a chiller to stop bacterial
growth. Shawarma shack utilized this
equipment to store drinks they offered.

• Rice Cooker

A piece of kitchen equipment called a rice cooker

is used to cook a wide variety of grains and rice. They
function by heating water to a boil and letting it soak
into the rice until it is tender. Since rice cookers are
automatic, your staff can focus on other tasks while
the rice cooks (WebstaurantStore).

OPERATIONAL FEASIBILITY

The degree to which a proposed system solves problems capitalizes on opportunities

and satisfies requirements discovered during the scope definition and requirements analysis
phases of system development is referred to as the operational feasibility of the system. This
evaluation involves doing research to determine if and how well the project will satisfy the
company's requirements. Operational feasibility studies also look at how a project plan fulfills
the needs discovered during the system development process' requirements analysis phase.
This is a measure of how well the proposed system solves problems, puts emphasis
on opportunities, and satisfies requirements. The operational feasibility analysis investigates
whether or not the organization is willing to support the system that is being suggested.
This is perhaps the most challenging aspect of the possibilities to evaluate accurately. It is
essential to have a solid understanding of the management's commitment to the potential
project before attempting to evaluate its practicability. If management was the one who
made the initial request, there is a good chance that management agrees with the proposal
and that the system will be approved for usage. Having said that, it is equally essential that
the majority of the workforce be on board with the new direction. Operational feasibility also

32 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

entails estimating whether the system will be utilized if it is designed and deployed, and it
depends on the human resources available for the project.
The following are the key inquiries that aid in determining if a system is operationally
feasible:

• Does the present mode of operation provide sufficient reaction time and
throughput?
• Does the present mode provide timely, relevant, accurate, and structured
information to end users and managers?
• Does the business's present way of operation provide cost-effective information
services?
• Could there be an improvement in benefits or a decrease in costs?
• Does the existing method of operation provide enough safeguards against fraud
and to ensure the security and integrity of data and information?
• Does the existing method of operation make the best use of the people, time, and
form flow that are available?
• Does the present system provide services that are reliable?
• Are the services extensible and flexible?
• Are the work habits and processes in place sufficient to support the new system?
• Will the system be implemented if it is created?

SHAWARMA SHACK'S OPERATION

Shawarma Shack is one of the most well-known shawarma stores in the Philippines.
From its modest beginnings in Divisoria, it has grown to become one of the most successful
franchising businesses in the nation. They were able to accomplish a great deal of recognition
in a very short period of time because to the effective administration of their business, which
included the management of their Operations. Since the actual operations manual for the
Shawarma Shack franchising system is "privileged" information due to the fact that it is
included in their franchising inclusions, it is evident that Shawarma Shack's operational
system is well-organized and transparent, as it also expresses and posts on its social media
account how it prepares its high-quality products.
They have shown in a video that is available on their channel that they maintain the
highest possible levels of cleanliness and food safety in the manufacturing and operating
areas of their facility. As we can see in this picture, it is mandatory for every employee to wear
personal protective equipment in order to reduce the risk of cross-contamination and the
spread of bacteria that might occur during the processing stage. In addition to this, they make
sure that all of the ingredients come from legitimate sources and that they are all kept in good
conditions.

34 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

All of the ingredients are given and preserved in a clean environment, as stated on the
franchise package. The sauces were made with the help of machinery and the necessary
ingredients. It will be securely wrapped and packaged to prevent leaking and poor quality.
The pita bread is molded to its desired shape and form, then it goes through a machine that
hardens its texture appropriately, and it is freed from it fully cooked, thus it is pre-cooked or
will be heated only on store preparation. All of the meats were first processed on machines
with the necessary ingredients before being cooked and seasoned with all of the essential
spices, seasonings, and condiments. Following that, it will be neatly wrapped and already
minced.
On the actual store, every order was processed in accordance with the procedure that
had been designated for it. The crew is responsible for preparing all of the required items,
including rice, meats, and sauces, among other things. Due to the fact that it had been
prepared before the shop opened, the meat was already cooked when it was brought out in
the counter and in front of the customers. It prevents spontaneous operations and the use of
additional time on the part of the customers. Because improper sanitation in the store,
including the kitchen and storage areas, may have a negative impact on the overall quality of
the ingredients as well as the reputation of the brand as a whole, it is imperative that these
areas be kept in immaculate condition at all times. In terms of the training that the crews get,
it typically takes between 10 to 15 days of training for them to be ready to be dispatched to
the branches that have been allocated to them. The franchisee is the one that is accountable

35 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

for hiring all of their own staff members. Every shop has at least two to three members of
staff. In the event that they run out of supplies, the franchisee or workers are required to
place an order with the main office. The store's operation day and hour may vary depending
on location and area. It is also dependent on the franchisee. It would also be beneficial to
6have music in the shop.

Making any company achieve its full potential requires expertise and effort if the
franchise is to succeed. However, you must first confirm that you have sufficient funds for
your company. Decide how much you can invest, how much you're prepared to risk, and how
much money you'll need to survive for at least a year while paying attention to your
accountant and lawyer. You must adhere to the rules as well. Once their firm is up and
running, franchisees often start changing, adding, or altering the current items, advertising,
hours, services, and even the quality and consistency they are authorized to provide. You
safeguard the brand, your investment, and the investments of your fellow franchisees by
adhering to the system. Choose the finest candidates and treat them well. Great aid is
necessary yet difficult to get by. Additionally, training need to be ongoing. Your front line are
your employees. A wonderful approach to convey to your staff that they are important to you
is through training sessions. Get as much training from the franchisor as you can. Retrain and
retrain all of your workers often. Provide excellent customer service. Maintain contact with

36 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

the franchisers: emails, faxes, phone conversations, training sessions, regional meetings,
conferences, and conventions are all examples of keeping in touch. Participate in the
franchise owners’ organization to interact with other franchisees. Finally, you must reduce
expenses and increase revenue. Do your best every day and watch out for shrinking.

37 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

Economic feasibility
A feasibility study may also include an economic analysis of the project. The purpose of
economic analysis is to determine whether there is an economic case for the investment
decision. This assessment goes beyond the items typically included in a financial analysis. It
tells what exactly the franchisee can get from the business economically.

This economic feasibility is interested in:

• The economic benefits from the project
• The economic costs of the project

Investment Costs
Shawarma Shack Franchise Information

If the Buy 1-Take 1 shawarma is not enough to catch your attention, then maybe
P400,000 in savings might.

In 2021, Shawarma Shack is slashing hundreds of thousands of pesos from their

original franchise fees. To kick off, the first 21 franchisees will get a discounted franchise fee
of just P90,000 across all franchise formats. That adds up to P400,000 in savings.

But beyond achieving the goal of growing exponentially, especially outside of Metro
Manila, the main reason for the promo is to help Filipinos bounce back from the impact of the
pandemic by helping them run their own business.

From being a humble shack in Manila in 2015 to being one of the most successful
shawarma brands in the country today, Shawarma Shack is the brand of real affordability, real
quality, and real profitability.

Measurement of non-market benefits and costs

Where some benefits and costs from the project do not have an observable monetary
value (eg a market price) a full quantitative analysis would require a monetary value to be
estimated. The advisor or analyst who is conducting the economic feasibility study would
need to propose and justify the valuation. This should be based on a strong and defensible
methodology as the valuation of non-monetary benefits and costs can be very subjective.

I. Advantages of Shawarma Shack Franchise

Use of tradename, logo and name

II. Pre-opening and start-up assistance

Site evaluation assistance
Site evaluation is a process in which a website is evaluated for the purpose of assessing
how well it performs against a list of criteria or a rubric. Many different approaches can be
used for site evaluations. They can also be conducted for different purposes, ranging from
valuing a website so that it can be sold for a fair price to determining whether or not a website
is a good source of information for an academic paper.

Franchise operations manual

A franchise operations manual is the DNA of a franchise system – the foundation that
governs franchise unit performance, procedures and conduct. It sets out in detail the
specifications, standards, and procedures with which franchisees must comply in order to
operate their franchised businesses and consistently deliver on the franchisor’s brand
promise.

Training on business operations management, customer service, and local store marketing

It is concerned with converting

materials and labor into goods and
services as efficiently as possible to
maximize the profit of an
organization. Operations-
management teams attempt to
balance costs with revenue to
achieve the highest net operating
profit possible.
How to Develop a Customer Service Training Program
a. List customer needs
b. Assess company weakness
c. Plan how to meet customer needs.
d. Implement a customer service program
e. Review and revise as needed.
Grand opening and marketing support
For grand opening, here are some easy (yet effective) ideas:
1. Have an exclusive sale (give discounts for an exclusive date)
2. Have free food and music
3. Support a worthy cause (support charity, donations, etc.)

44 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

4. Invite special guests and speakers (may include some local politicians or well-known
businessmen in your place).
5. Offer a demo or workshop (provide possible training/insights for franchisee or crew
wannabes)
6. Make it a weeklong celebration (extend it to make a more lasting effect and market
penetration).
7. Hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony (prepare to gather some spectators, ribbons, and
scissors to mark the beginning of your business).

Disadvantages of Shawarma Shack Franchise

Looking on the two sides of the coin, business is not always fair-weathered, rainbows
and sunshine. One must also know the weaknesses or downsides of his/her business to be
able to prepare or steer the wheel on such inconveniences.
As Shawarma is a growing business trend today, competition among other business
with a similar concept is one of the greatest disadvantages of franchising Shawarma Shack
Food management is crucial as the products are easy to spoil
As Shawarma businesses continuously grow, finding a spot which is not overly saturated with
the same concept can be hard.

Legal Requirement Feasibility Review

Legalities
What comes first to mind when we speak about legality?
Legality, according to Merriam Webster Dictionary, is the attachment to or
observance of law. Second, the quality or state of being legal. Third, lawfulness.
Can a business run smoothly and freely under the eyes of the law, authority without being
penalized if it does not comply the basic requirements and legal documents?
Among the List of Top Shawarma Franchise Businesses in the Philippines, Shawarma
Shack is one of the most exciting and unique. With its innovative Buy 1 Take 1 Shawarma,
strong celebrity endorsers and state of the art production facilities, Shawarma Shack
continues to grow across the Philippines.
A franchise (or franchising) is a method of distributing products or services involving a
franchisor, who establishes the brand’s trademark or trade name and a business system, and
a franchisee, who pays a royalty and often an initial fee for the right to do business under the
franchisor's name and system. Technically, the contract binding the two parties is the
“franchise,” but that term more commonly refers to the actual business that the franchisee
operates. The practice of creating and distributing the brand and franchise system is most
often referred to as franchising.
Being a franchise means representing the franchisor itself. It’s like being a branch of a
huge tree. Your brand name, identity, pattern, and entire business process will come from
the main trunk. In order to branch out, first, a natural and due process must be followed.
As we discuss further, we will be tackling about the startup requirements on
establishing a franchise.
Required Documents to Be Submitted to the Franchisor

After the entrepreneur has made up his mind, he has to prepare certain documents
to legalize his owning of the franchise business he chose. Below are some of the more
common pertinent documents a franchisor needs in order to keep the ball rolling.

46 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

Letter of Intent to Franchise

A Letter of Intent is used in most business transactions like franchising. It sketches the
different terms and conditions of the deal and acts as an agreement between two parties, in
this case, the franchisor and the franchisee.

Taken from the word itself, this paper shows your intentions that aims to answer the
5W’s and 1H of your business preparation.

47 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

Application Form

Just like applying for a job, interested franchisee must accomplish an application form.
This usually comes from the company he is interested in doing business and must be filled out
completely and correctly.

Application forms are not only for applying on contractual or regular job positions. It
is also necessary in granting your own franchise.

48 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

Site/Location Proposal

It simply answers the most fundamental question of where would you want to put up
your exact business location? Or where can you be located?

Most business owners today are keen on knowing the details of the location a
franchisee is proposing. The owner usually sets a criterion to locate his business in the future.
Included in the criterion can be population density of the place, volume of vehicles, a building
that is conducive for the business, the type of market around the vicinity and many more.

49 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

Minor Requirements After Site Location Approval

Although these requirements are called “minor”, it is only because they are
succeeding the basic ones of the franchisor. These are the minor requirements that bear a
major necessity.

SSS Letter of Agreement

Once there is a go-signal

from the company that the
proposed business location is
approved, there are other legal
requirements that a franchisee
must comply in order to finalize
his transaction and start his
business franchise. These
documents are as important as
the LOI or the Application Letter
as they act as legal proof for
government recognition.

The SSS shall issue

a Letter of Introduction (LOI)
form to members without
existing bank accounts, which
shall be presented to the SSS-accredited bank chosen by the member for purposes of opening
of single savings account/cash card account.

It serves as a proof or guarantee that the applicant is financially fit to loan or invest
for the business and will pay afterwards.

50 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

Memorandum of Understanding

(Or M.U.) We guessed that acronym is not only meant for couple relationships. It’s
also pretty used in the business setting.

It is clearly understood that documents play an important role in protecting the

interest of the business and the business owners in the franchising world. In some businesses,
franchisors often bind the franchisee to a Memorandum of Understanding. This is aside from
the Agreement made to formalize the franchisee’s interest to the company.

A Memorandum of
Understanding can be found
somewhere between the formal
contract and a gentleman’s
handshake. Under MOU are the
records of conversations with the
suppliers, potential partners and to
those people involved in one way or
another to your business. It can also
be called as the Contract of
Agreement, proof that the involved
parties are agreeing with the
transaction.

As we can see, it shows those

that are involved and their roles in
fulfilling the said agreement.

Business Name Registration (Department of Trade and Industry)

Now that your mind has finally decided to buy a business franchise, it is still important
to get the nod of DTI because the name of the franchise is the one you are using in dealing
with your clients. Why DTI? DTI is the government’s hand in overseeing and facilitating the
creation of business and it governs the registration of business and trade names in the
Philippines.

It is to ensure that your business name is enlisted or registered to the government.

52 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

Barangay Clearance

Now that you are done with DTI, it is time to get a clearance from the barangay where
your business is located. This is an important document as the clearance you get from the
barangay will be used to get other documents like business permits. There should not be any
worries as applying for a Barangay Clearance is very quick and easy.

To apply for the Barangay

Clearance, you need to show the
Business Name Registration from the
Department of Trade and Industry. The
other requirement is the Copy of Lease
(if you are renting), or a Copy of the Land
Title and Tax Declaration (if you own the
property). You can request for your
Barangay Clearance once these
requirements are complete. All you need
to do is proceed to the Barangay Hall
which has the jurisdiction on your
business location and fill out an
application form for Barangay Clearance
request.

It shows your identity, profile, and standing as a businessman residing in your respective
barangay.

Business or Mayor’s Permit

Of course, your business wouldn’t be successful without the city or town mayor’s
blessing. Barangay clearance will not suffice your needs of your residential legalities per se. It
also has to be upon the awareness of the head of the LGU.

POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

Here in the Philippines, every company to operate legally must secure its Business or
Mayor’s Permit. This is a license from the Local Government Unit that is deemed important
and a prerequisite for a business to start operating.

The Business Permit is a key compliance document which entitles and enables a
business to legally operate and do business in the area in which the business is registered. In
short, the Business Permit can be considered as a “licence to operate” within that specific
area.

54 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

In applying for a Mayor’s Permit, you must have completed the following basic
requirements like:

I. Barangay Clearance

II. Business Name Certificate from the DTI

III. Lease of Contract or Tax Declaration/Land Title

Lease of Contract or Tax Declaration/Land Title

A rental and lease agreement is a

document that outlines the arrangement
between an owner of a real estate, known
as the “landlord” or “lessor”, and someone
else that is willing to pay rent while
occupying the property, known as the
“tenant” or “lessee”. In layman’s term, it’s
a document used for the occupying of space
(either commercial or residential) for a
period of time in exchange for monthly
rent. The terms of the contract are
negotiable between the tenant and
landlord and once signed, the form is
considered legally and mutually binding.

Where exactly do you plan to open your shop? What establishment? Do you own it?
If not, did the owner permit you to use the place? These are some of the questions that are
being answered by this requirement.

55 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

IV. SSS Certification

An employer must register with SSS upon hiring their first employee to comply with
the Philippine laws that mandate retirement, maternity, sickness, disability, funeral, death
benefits, and loans for the members. It is imperative to register with SSS to ensure that every
employee acquires a proper employment benefit.

SSS is an institute that is supposed to back up on the proper needs and benefit services
of the franchisee. It ensures that the included stipulations are being provided by the
franchisor.

56 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

V. Community Tax Certificate or CEDULA

Have you been familiarized with the term “cedula” from our Katipuneros back then?
Turns out it’s still effective today.

Community Tax Certificate or Cedula is issued to a person or corporation upon

payment of the Community tax. A community tax is paid in place of residence of the individual
or in the place where the principal office of the juridical entity is located.
It guarantees that you pay the necessary or due taxes constituted from your business
operations.

So far, these are only the basic requirements one would need to open a franchise
store. It’s only a matter of short time for it to be approved and surprise! Your legalities have
already been fulfilled and you can start operating as soon as possible. As long as you are
cleared on the necessary requirements, there is no dilly dallying. You can start earning profit
right away, much more that food is the main avenue of the customer’s purchase. It is always
needed and it will never wear out. So, what are you waiting for? Submit these simple, basic
legalities now.

SCHEDULING REQUIREMENT
Schedule feasibility is defined as the likelihood of a project being completed within its
scheduled time frame. Also, it is a degree to which a deadline for strategy, plan, project, or
process is realistic and achievable. I do believe that this assessment is the most important for
project success because after all, a project will fail if not completed on time. In scheduling
feasibility, an organization estimates how much time the project will take to complete. Some
projects are initiated with specific deadlines that need to be determined whether they are:
mandatory or desirable.
When these areas have all been examined, the feasibility analysis helps identify any
constraints the proposed project may face, including:
• Internal Project Constraints: Technical, Technology, Budget, Resource, etc.
• Internal Corporate Constraints: Financial, Marketing, Export, etc.
• External Constraints: Logistics, Environment, Laws, and Regulations, etc.

When assessing schedule feasibility, as systems analyst must consider the interaction
between time and costs.
• For example, speeding up a project schedule might make a project feasible, but much
more expensive.

To ensure the schedule feasibility of the proposed system, the system analyst should
consider the following related issues:
• Has management established a firm timetable for the project?
• Given technical expertise, are the project deadline reasonable?
• Can the proposal be accomplished within an acceptable time frame?
• What conditions must be satisfied during the development of the system?
• Will an accelerated schedule pose any risks?
• If so, are the risks acceptable?
• Will project management techniques be available to coordinate and control the
project?
• Will a project manager be appointed?

EVALUATION OF THE SCORES

Functionality qualities are the features that are frequently tested in a feasibility
review. It is an assessment of the likelihood that a specific strategy will be successful following
additional study and application. There is no standard format for feasibility studies, which is
something we should state right away. The requirements and operational frameworks of any
firm vary. The aspects listed above are present in every feasibility study, however, the
particular project under consideration will determine the format. Determining a generic
structure for doing a feasibility study that can be easily modified for various initiatives is what
we'll do in this part (SlideModel.com).
In evaluating the scores, the factors to be considered still vary on the company’s
choice. Most likely, the variability of its choice depends on the mentioned types of feasibility
such as Technical, Operational, Economic, Legal Requirements, and Scheduling Requirements.
First, look at all five analytical components and think about which business sectors will be
most impacted by your project in order to reduce the project's scope. However, keep in mind
that your actions may still have an effect on all areas of your business even if you aren't
proposing a significant initiative that would affect the entire organization (new product
launch). See the table below.

Figure 1: Feasibility Analysis Matrix Template

59 | P a g e

To provide an emphasis on the chosen factors of an entity to assess whether it is feasible or

not, they may select a sub-category of the main types of the feasibility study. Based on the
table the presented factors are strategic, product advantage, market attractiveness, leverage
competencies, financial feasibility, and operational feasibility. The evaluator does not require
to be an external or certified evaluator, but rather, a team member who has a deep

knowledge and history of the chosen factor.

Strategic Evaluation
Determining the organization's strategy is a step
in the strategic management process. It is also
described as the procedure through which managers
select a group of organizational strategies that will
help it operate better. Among the 5 respondents,
the scores obtained a mean of 8.60 which can be
converted to 86%. The answer was based on the
franchising offered by Shawarma Shack, from the
training for the staff including the investment,
monitoring the financial statements of its
franchisee, customer service availability, product innovation, and its current “Affordable buy
1 take 1” marketing strategy.
Product Innovation Evaluation
One of the company's strengths is its variety of mouth-watering and juicy shawarma
tastes, including chicken, kebab, beef, and tikka. In addition to cheap Mediterranean snacks,
Shawarma also serves reasonably priced entrees. These are bowl-sized or standard dine-in-
size shawarma rice dishes with chicken and beef. In order to respect Muslim culture, they also
included nachos and fries, which are exclusively made with chicken and beef, to their menu
to satisfy extra demands. They also ensured that the foods were served hot and well-cooked
in signature yellow and black packaging.
To ensure that each Filipino's cravings are satisfied, the company uses fresh and high-
quality vegetables and meats. Customers will experience and taste authentic shawarma,
packed and served hot at affordable prices, as the owner states "We are Pang-masa na
shawarma." The sauces, such as mayonnaise, mustard, and ketchup, were made in-house by
the company rather than by a third-party vendor. Because it is a Mediterranean food, it
contains enough nutrients to allow for a guilt-free snack. Disclaimer: Photos were retrieved

Buy 1 take 1 Shawarma Shack Rice Meal

Shawarma Shack innovated its product by serving it in a bowl and selling it in a "buy
one, take one" purchase option with a reasonable size to satisfy its customers' hunger for
two.

To make it more attractive to its customers, they have added French fries to its menu.
Fries are made from real potatoes and will be fried upon order.

Single orders for Nachos and fries

The company decided to combine its tasteful classic western snacks, adding nachos to
the abovementioned menu, just like the other menu. The producers of the nachos were not
disclosed, but all of the ingredients included, such as sauces and fries, were freshly made by
the company. Again, just a disclaimer, the group does not own the below images these were
retrieved from the official Facebook page of the said business.

Shawarma is the origin of all of these offerings. The main product, a Mediterranean
classic-inspired food, is the CEO and President of the company's own flavor combination. Mr.
Buenavista. He combines the original strong flavor of Western countries with the sweet
tongue of the Filipinos. The pita used was baked on their own machines and had a matching
and mildly sweet flavor to complement the meats. Below are the famous shawarma by
Shawarma Shack.

Shawarma Shack's in-demand menu inspired them to combine three menus into one
that can be offered by all franchisees depending on the investment they are willing to make
in the company. These are the last and latest set of menus released by the company. They
have divided their combo meals and snack into three categories such as Eat Sawrap, Have A
Rice Day, and Super Meal.

The group also came to the realization that the company's product innovation extends
beyond just tangible goods; in addition, they excel at offering services that encourage aspiring
young business owners to explore their entrepreneurial skills. Hence, the 100% score for
product innovation is appropriate for the company.

Market Attractiveness Evaluation

The capacity of a market to generate increases in sales and profits is measured by its
market attractiveness. It is critical to emphasize that this analysis of market attractiveness
should be unbiased and based on information from sources other than the business. The
actual criteria will, of course, be established by the business doing the exercise and will be
pertinent to the goals the organization is attempting to accomplish (CEOpedia). According to
the same source, there are six (6) matrices to assess the market attractiveness of an entity
these are stability of technology, size of the market, market growth rate, the intensity of
competition, customer product sensitivity, and customer price sensitivity.
In less than seven years, the company has grown from a small stall at campus events
to over 700 branches nationwide. This will not be possible if franchising is not simple and cost-
effective for young entrepreneurs. From table 3, out of 5 respondents, the company obtained
an 80% which has a mean of 8.
Technology
The advanced and smart technology used by the company, particularly in production,
has already been discussed in this paper. They are not only known for their advanced
machines, but also for their sanitation and quality control. Below are the discussed machine
used.

Franchises as to market growth rate and Size of the Market

Each company treated privacy and security as paramount as possible, thus they only
provided some franchise broker companies minimal information about the business.
According to ufranchise sales and management, there are 111 disclosed stores that the
company provided to them which are listed in the table below. Take note that the table was
requested for a franchise inquiry made by the group.

According to one of the crews in the Commonwealth Quezon City branch, they were
able to sell at least 4000 pieces of shawarma including the rice meals. This is only on a single
branch. If we will assume each branch has at least 4,000 units sold on a daily basis, an
estimated 2,800,000 menus were sold. These 700 branches are from Luzon, Visayas and
Mindanao.
In addition, the Philippines’ largest malls permitted Shawarma Shack to operate their
business as a vendor, they are partnered with SM, Robinson, Ayala Malls, Xentro Mall,
Puregold, and Town Center Mall nationwide. From the same source, the company holds the
top 1 as the most entrepreneurs’ choice to franchise among the competitors.

The intensity of the Competition

In any market, there is a rivalry. Depending on who the competitor is, another
company's chances of success in the same industry are increased or decreased. Competition
should be evaluated in light of factors including size, level of aggression against rivals,
potential advantages, number of competitors, and market share (Simonetti, B. 2017). A
market dominated by a single strong competitor
r may be unappealing because that competitor is likely to be aggressive toward a newcomer
and may dominate necessary contracts for suppliers or distributors. A market with many small
players, on the other hand, may still be ripe for one to emerge as the dominant player.
In relation to Shawarma Shack, we have created a table to present our decision in
giving it an 80% in one of the factors in terms of competition. As shown in table 4, the three
main competitors of the company are Turks, JM Shawarma, and Khaleb.

Table 4: Direct Competition table as to Menu
Turks is one of the direct competitors of Shawarma Shack and leading shawarma
companies in the Philippines. It has more than six hundred (600) branches nationwide with
over 183 franchises for 15 years of operation. We checked the numbers of its menu which
composes of five (5) shawarma flavors such as beef, beef kebab, chicken, chicken kebab, and
hotdog shawarma. These flavors of shawarma in a single order cost 85 pesos. We also checked
their rice menu which comprises 12 menus. These are beef rice, beef chicken, beef kebab,
chicken and beef kebab, chicken kebab and beef kebab, kebab, beef steak, and chicken rice.
Most of the rice meals’ prices started from 125.00 pesos up to 140.00 pesos.
Secondly, JM Shawarma was first known and popularized in Mindanao. They have one
hundred (100) branches nationwide with over twenty-five (25) franchises in the Philippines.
They are also offering five (5) choices of shawarma such as chicken, beef, all meat, cheesy
wrap, and overload which prices starting from 69.00 pesos up to 89.00 pesos for single order.
The rice meal they have are regular shawarma rice, overload, and shawarma noodles that
cost 98.00 pesos. Lastly, customers may add snacks which are cheesy chips and cheesy fries.
Price ranges from 94 pesos up to 106.00 pesos.
The third well-known shawarma company is Khaleb. The company has forty (40)
branches within Metro Manila for the last 19 years of operation. The number of its franchise
branches was not disclosed in all resources for privacy reasons. They are offering five (5)
flavors of shawarma such as chicken, beef, and kebab with an additional “add-on” for 150.00
pesos. Their shawarma costs 84.00 pesos – 108.00 pesos. They were known for the rice meal
offered such as baked shawarma rice, BTK meal, Khalee rice, and beef kebab for 155.00 pesos
up to 263.00 pesos.
In comparison, Shawarma Shack has seven hundred (700) branches nationwide with
over five hundred (500) franchises locally in the Philippines so far. This success was recorded
for seven (7) years of business operation. They have four (4) original flavors of shawarma such

73 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

as kebab, tikka, beef, and chicken shawarma for only 89.00 pesos up to 120.00 pesos (buy 1
take 1). They also have ten (10) numbers of menus for rice meals such as beef shawarma
bowl, chicken shawarma bowl, kebab beef, or chicken. These are included on their snack and
can be purchased on a buy 1 take 1 basis and combo meals. Price ranges from 115.00 pesos
up to 145.00 pesos. Snacks are fries, chicken, and beef nachos which are combined into
multiple menus.
The intense competition of each company is evidently shown in the table. From the
price, variability of the products offered, and the option that a customer may select. Among
all these, Shawarma Shack maintains not to focus only on the concept of Shawarma but added
a snack that was combined on their menus. Let us see the intensity of its competition in terms
of franchising start-ups.
FRANCHISE COMPETITION TABLE
Company Franchise Fee (Php) Investment Formats
Turks 1M- 1.4 M 1.8 M- 3.4 M Cart/ Kiosk and In-

JM Shawarma 200,000.00 545,000- 1.2 M Cart, Kiosk, and In-

Khaleb 100,000.00 850,000-3.2 M Cart, Kiosk, Counter,

Shawarma Shack 90,000.00 680,000-3.1 M Cart, Kiosk, In-Line,
and Restaurant

Shawarma Shack ranked in the top five (5) companies in the Philippines under the
shawarma franchise category featured by UFranchise, the Philippines’ biggest franchise sales
company. The franchise fee for Shawarma Shack is 90,000.00 pesos, for Turks cost
1,000,000.00 up to 1,400,000.00 pesos, JM shawarma cost 200,000.00 pesos and Khaleb for
100,000.00. Even from these companies, the cheapest investment fee can be seen for Khaleb,
still, the franchisee chooses Shawarma Shack. Aside from the franchise fee, the franchisee

74 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

needs to pay for the investment fee. JM Shawarma holds the lowest cost for only 545,000.00
pesos up to 1,200,000.00 pesos, followed by shawarma shack which requires the investors to
have at least 680,000.00 pesos up to 3,100,000.00 pesos. Third, Khaleb asked their clients to
have at least 850,000.00 pesos up to 3,200,000.00 pesos. Lastly, Turks have the highest
investment costs of 1,800,000.00 pesos up to 3,400,000.00 pesos.
All of these four (4) companies are offering the same branch format. Clients may select
a cart, kiosk, and In-line. However, only the Shawarma Shack and Khaleb can support a
restaurant type of franchise to its client. Therefore, in regard to the price and format of
franchise services, the Shawarma Shack still holds a reasonable and convenience to its
prospects.
Price Sensitivity
Nobody can deny that customers are
price sensitive; you are considered lucky if you
do not look at the price first before purchasing
an item or service. According to SendPulse,
price sensitivity is a metric that illustrates how
variations in the cost of goods or services affect
consumers' purchasing decisions. Simply put, it
shows how changes in a product's price affect demand for that product.
As business owners and prospects for franchising a business, we need to be careful in
choosing an industry we are about to invest our money. This includes the company, current
market share, suppliers, workforce, the demand for the offering, etc. The most difficult task,
however, is to find a balance between your price range and your customer’s ability to pay so
that you can make the expected profit. From the table above, we noticed that even Turks
have most numbers on the menu for a meal yet, prospects for franchising show that they are
not 100% willing to invest in high-cost investment and franchise fees. If you already have great
products or services, but they aren’t selling, it might be the problem of high price sensitivity
(SendPulse).

75 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

There are two (2) types of Price Sensitivity such as High and Low-price sensitivity.
According to the same source, High price sensitivity indicates that customers can easily reject
buying a product since its cost is unreasonable. On the other hand, Low price sensitivity shows
that clients are willing to pay the mentioned price and can even pay more for it. In addition,
there are factors affecting not only the price sensitivity of the customers but also the product
itself.
a. Product Type
• Does the offering is a need? Or wants?
• Consideration of economics or demand for the product or services
• Does the demand was influenced by quality or price?

b. References price
• Customers typically compare products and evaluate all of their options before
selecting the best option that offers the lowest price.

c. Switching Cost
• Onboarding fees
• Time and effort

d. Ease Comparison
• Product uniqueness
• Remember, it’s critical to differentiate your goods and make customers choose
your brand over your competitors (Send Pulse).

Leverage Competencies
These are the distinctive abilities and resources of an organization that allow it to offer
customers worthwhile goods or services, giving it a competitive advantage over rivals. One of
the main goals of business strategy is also to figure out how to gain a competitive advantage.
Core Competencies of Shawarma Shack
1. Culture-Sensitive Menu
All of the menus are halal products. With respect to Islam culture, they are not using
any meat that is forbidden by the said religion.

2. Technology use in Operation and Quality Control

According to the group's assessment of the operational and technological feasibility
review, Shawarma Shack is the industry leader in treating sanitation as a core value with its
smart-technology machines.

National and local marketing support

Different franchisors offer different types of marketing assistance. The effectiveness

of your social media advertising with your customer base, your ability to pique local media
interest, the cost of advertising in local media, and other factors will all affect your marketing
strategy. These factors include business location, business model, and services offered.
How Franchising Makes Marketing Easier
Franchise owners are aware of the best ways and best customers to target. They have
the knowledge and expertise to help you create successful marketing plans and can provide
you with the materials you need (Tide).
Logos and Images for Ads and social media are already designed.
• Franchisees pay for a license that allows them to use the franchisor’s images, logos, and other
branded materials. Not only does this allow franchisees to benefit from the name and brand
recognition of the franchise, but it also saves them the time and money required to hire

79 | P a g e

someone to design images and logos businesses need for ads and posts on social media, in
newspapers and other platforms.

Strategies for Grand Openings are Established

• They are able to offer suggestions for generating buzz about the company that have been
successful for other franchisees. You can also talk plans with other franchise owners who have
held prosperous grand openings and amassed a thriving clientele in different localities.

Our group tries to ask some of our friends about their initial impression if they saw the
logo of Shawarma Shack, and they automatically responded as it was owned by Box office
King & Queen Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo. This demonstrates how effective the
company's national and local marketing support is. The brand is associated with two well-
known artists in the Philippines. If an investor chooses to franchise the company, they will not
have to expend as much effort in informing their market that their product is available in a
specific area. All stores are authorized to use any Shawarma Shack form of advertisement
tools such as posters, logos, commercials, and free bios.

ALPHA AND BETA TESTING

• Alpha and Beta Testing phases mainly focus on discovering the bugs from an already
tested product and they give a clear picture of how the product is used by the real-
time users. They also help in gaining experience with the product before its launch
and valuable feedback is effectively implemented to increase the usability of the
product.
• Goals and methods of Alpha & Beta Testing do switch between themselves based on
the process followed in the project and can be tweaked to be in-line with the
processes.

ALPHA TESTING
• Alpha testing is typically run-on internal users by the QA team (Quality Assurance) to
make sure that the software meets all expectations and is working as it should. Thus,
it represents an opportunity to evaluate the performance and functionality of a
product release as well as obtain feedback from technical users.
• In other words, the main purpose of this test is to uncover any bugs or issues to resolve
them before the final product is released to users. It helps ensure bug-free
functionality by carrying out tasks that a typical user may perform.
• This test is usually performed when your product is nearly complete towards the end
of the software development cycle in a staging environment, which attempts to mimic
an actual production environment as closely as possible, but before beta testing,
which we’ll get to later.

BETA TESTING
• Beta testing involves releasing the software to a limited number of real users external
to the organization. As a result, this type of testing is done in a production
environment.
• These users will then be asked to provide their feedback on the release, also named
"beta version". Beta testing, then, is an opportunity that allows users to test out the
product to uncover any bugs or issues related to user experience (UX) before it is
rolled out to the rest of your users.

Product Quality Check

When producing consumer goods for sale in the market, you must guarantee that
they are well-made. If customers purchase your product and it breaks quickly or fails to
perform as promised, they are likely to return it and leave a negative evaluation. As a result,
product quality checks are an important tool.
A product quality check or product quality inspection is a process that includes
examining a product's numerous characteristics and testing it to make sure it complies with
predetermined requirements. This inspection may be carried out by a buyer, a member of the
factory's quality control staff, or a third-party inspection business. This is accomplished by
staff training, the development of product quality norms, and product testing to look for
statistically significant variances.
The implementation of clear controls is a crucial component of quality check. These
measures aid in standardizing both production and responses to problems with quality. By
limiting space for mistake and designating which production tasks are to be carried out by
which people, employers may lessen the possibility that staff members will be assigned to
jobs for which they are not properly qualified.

What are the different Kinds of Product Inspections?

Importers often decide to check their products after the manufacturer completes
manufacturing. By doing so, they may check the finished products' quality prior to loading
and shipping them abroad. In reality, there are three primary categories of product quality
checks.
• Pre-Production Inspections: these inspections are carried out prior to the
commencement of production and may be used to confirm the caliber of the raw
materials and the preparedness of the facility.
• During Production Inspections: are carried out while the manufacturing is still
going. You may decrease delays and find flaws early with the use of these
inspections.
• Pre-Shipment Inspections: The most typical kind of inspection is this one. Once
your products have been entirely made and at least 80% packed, they are carried
out.

87 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

How Do You Create an Inspection Checklist?

Every product quality inspection needs a checklist, which acts as a guide for the
inspector and includes a list of all tests and checks they must do. It includes packing and
labeling, functional testing, physical specifications, and more.
If you are dealing with an inspection service provider, you should construct your
checklist in conjunction with them. This cooperation is vital since you presumably have the
most understanding of your items. In contrast, your service provider likely has a solid
understanding of how to perform inspections. Nevertheless, it is essential to remember that
the final duty for ensuring that your checklist contains the appropriate things rests with you,
the customer. You must guarantee that it addresses every quality factor that is important to
you and your clients. Ensure that you have given this paper some consideration.
How Is It Done?
Usually, every stage of a manufacturing or commercial process includes quality
testing. Starting with evaluating raw materials, completed products, and samples taken from
the production line is a common practice for employees. Testing at different stages of
production may assist pinpoint the location of a production issue and the corrective actions
needed to stop it from happening again.

88 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

Customer service reviews, questionnaires, surveys, inspections, and audits are a few
examples of quality testing procedures that may be used in non-manufacturing businesses.
Any procedure or technique may be used by a company to ensure that the final product or
service is safe, compliant, and satisfies consumer demands.
The quality-checking process varies by industry. The kind of product or industry heavily
influences the quality control practices utilized in a corporation. For instance, quality control
in the manufacture of food and drugs entails making sure the product won't make a customer
ill, therefore the business tests samples from the production line for chemicals and
microorganisms.
Types of Quality Control Methods
• X-Bar Chart: Products are tested at random for the specified characteristics the chart
is monitoring. The X-Bar Chart, a popular kind of quality control chart, monitors the
extent to which the variation of the tested characteristic is acceptable along its y-axis
on the graph. The examined samples are tracked on the x-axis. You can tell if problems
are happening randomly or consistently by examining the variance pattern on this
chart.

89 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

• 100% Inspection Method: This is a quality control procedure that involves inspecting
and evaluating every component of the product. To rule out product faults, this kind
of quality control is carried out. This approach is often used to assess precious metals
and products. Software for inventory analysis and information about the production
process are required for the 100% inspection technique. The difficulty with this
approach is that it is costly to examine each individual component of a product, and
doing so runs the risk of making it unstable or useless. For instance, if you analyze
organic strawberries using this technique, you run the risk of harming the berries and
making them unsellable.

90 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES

• Six Sigma: It is a quality management method that helps businesses find and fix
problems in their current processes, products, or services. The goal is to make quality
control in business or manufacturing as easy as possible so that there are few or no
differences. The name comes from the Greek letter sigma, which is a statistical symbol
for a standard deviation. Motorola used the term "Six Sigma" because a Six Sigma
process should be error-free 99.99966% of the time. This means that there should only
be 3.4 mistakes for every million chances. Motorola first set this goal for its own
manufacturing, but it quickly became a buzzword and a standard that many
companies followed.

• The Taguchi Method: Another strategy that stresses the contributions of research and
development, product design, and product development in lowering the incidence of
product flaws and failures is the Taguchi Method of quality control. The Taguchi
Method seeks to prevent production deviations from happening by prioritizing design
above the manufacturing process in quality control

Quality Control of Shawarma Shack

The following is one of the features
Shawarma Shack has guaranteed to its clients as
part of its franchising promotion:
"Excellent Quality Control – Shawarma Shack’s
quality control assures the business’ sustainability
and customer satisfaction."
Since the day when Shawarma Shack
began expanding into further franchises, the
company has placed a high priority on the complete satisfaction of its customers. One of their
strategies is to find their consumers and ask them for feedback, as well as observe their stall
to decide if there are any other aspects, like the quality of the service, that need to be
improved. They also have certificates and legal documents that will prove that they are
functioning at the optimal level necessary on keeping the sanitation of the workplace, as well
as the quality of the meats and goods, respectively. The company makes certain that all of
the suppliers, as well as the sources of the ingredients and the meat, come from organizations
and sources that are authorized by the government.

92 | P a g e
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES
[5] The CEO of Shawarma Shack, Mr. Walther Buenavista, stressed the value of taking into
account and respecting customer experience in an interview “I used to be very cost-
conscious. I remember one time I did not want to give tissues to customers because I wanted
to save. I realized later on that customers were not coming back because our service was
poor."
Our product's quality is also determined by how and what sort of service we provide
to our consumers. People generally reflect and perceive it in the same manner as they see
quality. People will buy less if their image deteriorates. So we must take remedial steps and
learn from our errors, particularly if they affect the quality of the food and what we serve.
Mr. Buenavista also said “I was wrong to think that profit must always come before
your customers. I realized that if you take care of your customers first, everything will just
follow."
“Through time, I have learned to be more generous to my customers and also to my
employees. When you learn to give more, you will also receive more later on.”

Launch Monitoring Dashboard

Dashboards are intended to provide a comprehensive overview of a company's
performance by utilizing data visualization tools such as charts and graphs. In other words,
A monitoring dashboard is a set of metric groups or custom views that you can use to monitor
the performance of the systems defined in the System Status task. These are measured
through key performance indicators (KPIs), which provide insights that will enable you to
foster growth and improvement (Data Fine).
Due to technological advancements, it now provides more accessible and rapid data
analysis for the specific areas that a company needs to examine. A key performance indicator
(KPI) is a measurable value that shows how well a company is meeting key business objectives.
KPIs are used by organizations to assess their progress and success in meeting targets
(Klipfolio). In simple terms, a KPI is a goal that you work towards achieving. Traditional
spreadsheets are becoming obsolete as businesses increasingly leverage the power of their
data through interactive dashboards and smart reporting tools. These dashboard tools,
powered by artificial intelligence and algorithms that traditional reporting methods cannot
match, are the future of sustainable business development and data analysis.
Return on Investment
Return on investment
(ROI) is a performance measure
used to evaluate the efficiency or
profitability of an investment or
compare the efficiency of a
number of different
investments. ROI tries to directly
measure the amount of return
on a particular investment, relative to the investment’s cost.
It tells whether we have earned or lost through the investment.
To calculate ROI, the benefit (or return) of an investment is divided by the cost of the
investment. The result is expressed as a percentage or a ratio.

TARGET UNIT SOLD

• Have you ever thought whether there’s a way to measure and compare present sales
to a target or past performance? If you did but had no idea how to do that, you are
going to find out. Sales targets lets you do that, and you are just about to find out how.
• Sales target is a measurement that lets you calculate the revenue of current sales and
compare it to a target or past performance. It can be set as a number of units sold,
monetary value or number of accounts. Observing the performance of sales against
targets is the main doctrine of any sales management strategy. In addition, it has an
influence when creating a data-driven culture.
• One way to set a sales target is making sure it is visible to the whole team. It can be
very impactful to design an effective sales target visual. For instance, a bullet chart has
the ability to capture past performance, current performance and target in one single
visual. When your team is trained to use this visual, you will have a team with the
ability to tell about the performance of sales.

The sales target attainment formula looks like this:

(Sales for the current period/Sales target) x 100
• Current sales - The computed sales from the given accounting period or timeframe on
a monetary basis which is expected to be liquidated in cash either during the said
period or in the future.
• Sales target- A sales target is the quantity of goods that must be sold in a specific time
frame to break even or turn a profit. The forecasts in your business plan should be met
by these goals.

satisfaction is defined as the measurement of joy or happiness that your products or services
can give to your market. It is something that can help your business to grow by the influenced
of your customers to the other possible customers. Customer’s reaction can be comes down
to two things. It is either Customer Satisfaction that resulted to Customer Loyalty in your
company, or Customer Complaints that can results to less possible customers, and you need
to choose where do your customers will end up, is it in Customer Loyalty or in Customer
Complaints?
Of course, as business owner, we already know the fact that even though you provide
a good quality products or services, there are people who will not admire it. Some people will
bash and say bad things to your products and some people will be happy of your services. This
is how business industry works, even those big companies, they already knew that they
cannot please people to enjoy and promote their products or services. Same as those big
companies, Shawarma Shack already experienced this matter. There are people who love

DASHBOARD
A smart data dashboard has the ability to answer a host of business-related
questions based on your specific goals, aims, and strategies (Datapine). There are
multiple websites that are offering services to create your company’s dashboards and the
group decided to feature YotPo.
Use the dashboard to:
• Track the number of customers that are engaged
with the program
• Understand how the Loyalty & Referrals program
is performing in terms of revenue
• View how changes to campaigns and coupons
affect your revenue
• Generate scheduled reports to easily share data
with teammates and stakeholders

The ROI Dashboard is comprised of a few sections which can be filtered by date range,
and further refined using the graph time frame. In order to sync the data, we simply need to
link our website or database to their own database.
Steps to create your dashboard.
• Log in to Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals
