It applies to horizontal vessels and to shell and tube exchangers. Loads and load combinations are given for use in designing the equipment and its supports. The requirements given here are in addition to any codes or standards referenced by the equipment specification. Where this specification and any referenced code or standard conflict, the more severe shall govern. BASIC UNITS Vendor's documentation, drawings, data, etc. in English and basically in the Imperial units Fabrication of equipment in the Metric syatem is acceptable provided that the dimensions on the arawinge are in Imperial Units, followed by the Metric equivalent enclosed in brackets. SUPPORTS ly two supports shall be provided for each piece of equipment unless otherwise specified. The location and orientation of the fixed and sliding feet will be shown on KNPC or its approved representative drawings. ‘The support feet shall be designed for the loads given herein and in accordance with the information on Plate 36x. Note that Plate 36X is to be used as a guide for single vessel or exchanger only. It may need revision especially for stacked Base plates for the support feet shall be qned for a maximum uniform bearing pressure of 500 psi (for teflon sheets). Unless the equipment specification or KNPC or ite approved representative drawings indicate otherwise, at allowance for piping, platforms and insulation shall be made equal to 20 Percent of the equipment dead load excluding internals. This load shall be applied uniformly Along the length of the equipment. OPERATING LOAD The operating load is the maximum weight of liquid, catalyst, and packing contents of the equipment during operating conditions. specific gravity and design liquid levels will be shown on the equipment data sheets. Internal pressures, given on the equipment data sheets, shall also be considered as an operating load. VIBRATION Equipment shall be designed to withstand the effect of any identified vibration forces. The Vendor shall define vibratory loads inherent in his equipment. KNPC or its approved representative will specify all other vibratory loads to be con lered on the data sheets. Vibratory loads shall be treated as operating loads for combining with other loads. LOADS FROM OTMER SOURCES KNPC or its approved representative will identify in the equipment specifications any additional loads which mist be included in the equipment design. The magnitude, point of application, direction and nature of the load will be given. For combining with other loads, these additional loads shall be considered as operating loads unless they are designated dead loads. ‘HYDROSTATIC TEST LOAD The hydrostatic test load is the weight of water required to fill completely the equipment for hydrostatic testing. Thie force ehall be assumed aa 150% of the bundle weight, but not less than 2,000 pounds when the unit ie in crude, tar or other heavy oil service. It shall be reduced to 1008 for all other services. If one foot of the exchanger is sliding the fixed exchanger foot and its connections shali be capable of resisting the entire force. For exchangers with both feet anchored, divide the pulling force equally bet Por stacked exchang assume only one bundle is pulled ata ti EQUIPMENT EXPANSIQY LOAD The longitudinal expansion and contraction of the equipment causes equal and opposite horizontal reactions at the base of the support feet. This force shall equal a 0.15 friction coefficient (for teflon sheets) times the gravity reaction at the aliding foot. Por thia calculation, the maximim gravity load including the specified allowance for piping and platforms shall be used. HORIZONTAL PIPING LOAD (1) The following requirements for horizontal piping L is apply only to the design of the equipment 4 their attachment to the shell. ‘The of the horizontal loads of attached piping shall be assumed equal to the smaller of 20 (4,2 + 422) or 30 a2 pounds. If the calculated load exceeds 12,000 pounds the Vendor may ask KNPC or its approved repre mtative for a more accurate estimation of the piping load. The symbol @, is the largest diameter piping nozel. in inches and d2 is the next largest, which 1a equal to or le that 4). The nominal sizes for dy and dz given on the equipment data sheets shall be used. (2) For stacked exchangers, the piping loads shall be additive. Direct piping between stacked exchangers shall not enter this calculation, however Page 6 Rev. 0 Date: Jan. 26, 1984 STRUCTURAL REQUIREMENTS FOR VE: iD EXCHANGERS KNPC ENG STD 4005 3.3 HORIZONTAL PIPING LOAD Continued (3) Te piping load shall be applied nonconcurrently at the following three points along the equipment axis. a It shall be applied longitudinally. The fixed foot shall resist the entire load. b It shall be applied transversely above the E£ixed foot. ¢ It shall be applied transversely above the sliding foot. 3.4 EARTHQUAKE LOAD Earthquake loads need not be considered. 3.5 WIND LaAD The basic wind velocity 4s 100 miles per hour for exposure C in accordance with ANSI AS8.1. Wind pressure as tabulated below shall be assumed from any horizontal direction on the projected area calculated as follows. ‘To account for supports, piping, and other attachments, the insulated OD of the equipment shall be increased by 40 percent or 2 feet whichever is less, If the vessel is supported above grade, the support elevation will be provided. The pi shown include the appropriate shape or drag coefficients.
