CHAPTER 1: The Transmission and Distribution System

I. CASE 1

Such severe electricity losses during the T&D process not only lead to 400 million Indians
missing out on power access during blackouts but also affect the country's economic
growth adversely.

1. Urgent need to stabilize India's energy losses during transmission & distribution

India's electricity losses during transmission and distribution (T&D) are a mammoth 28.44
percent, with the peak shortfall (between 5p.m. and 11p.m.) being as high as 13 percent. The most
bizarre contradiction is that 84.9 percent of Indian villages have at least one electricity line but
only 46 percent of rural households have access to electricity.

Such severe electricity losses during the T&D process not only lead to 400 million Indians
missing out on power access during blackouts but also affect the country's economic growth
adversely.

India has been one of the focus regions for Toshiba in the last few years with large-scale
investments and policy making. Toshiba has made India a core T&D production base by
manufacturing and supplying customer-focused world class products and services not just for India
but for other major markets, including Europe, ASEAN and Africa.

2. Toshiba's technological, product and engineering prowess, has the necessary

solutions that can address Tata Power's challenges

Tata Power, a fast-growing member of the elite Tata Group of companies, has established
itself as one of the world's premier electricity firms. It operates some of the largest grid networks
in urban India. However, they currently face some big challenges in running grid operations
smoothly in limited space, especially in urban areas where land availability is scarce and also
involves premium prices. To add to the complications, given today's climate change reality,
solutions are expected to be environment-friendly as well. Tata Power and Toshiba Transmission
& Distribution Systems (India) Pvt. Ltd. (TIDI) associated for over 20 years now, are known for
their high standards of quality and long-term reliability. Tata Power today has the maximum share
of Toshiba GIS installations in India. TTDI has also been interacting with Tata Power to introduce
Toshiba s New Technology Product (NTP) Solid Insulated Switchgear, which too is one of the
world's most environment-friendly technological wonders. India has a huge energy shortage and is
today the world's fastest growing economy. So, the Tata Power- Toshiba alliance will play a huge
role in filling the gap. This will help enhance both India's domestic consumption & infrastructure
and industrial expansion.

3. Facts about Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems

Toshiba Corporation manufactured its first transformer in 1894 and its first Switchgear
more than a century ago in 1902. Over 113 years since then, the vintage Japanese conglomerate
has developed more superior technology and achieved a sterling history of high product quality in
the international power industry through its Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems Group.

To galvanize its operations in India, Toshiba has set up a dedicated T&D subsidiary,
Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems (India) Pvt. Ltd. (TTDI). It started its journey in
2013 by acquiring transformer and Switchgear businesses from Vijai Electricals Ltd. The
manufacturing facility at Rudraram in Telangana has now become the state-of-art global
manufacturing hub of the parent company with a workforce of more than 6000. With 13 percent
market share, TTDI is the biggest player in Distribution Transformer segment in India.

II. REACTION

We all know that electricity is very important in our everyday lives. Electricity losses is
one of the major problems in the world. Today, we are surrounded by technology, innovation and
happiness. Electricity has now become a part of our daily life and one cannot think of a world
without electricity. I respect Indian people for being able to survive without electricity in their
area. It is so great to know that Toshiba and Tata Power have dealt on how to manage the scarcity
of electricity in India. With modern and advanced technology, we have today, it may provide some
electricity in the large area of India. The good thing also is Toshiba provided a switch gear that fill
the gaps in the area and it is also environment friendly. It is a good idea that Toshiba and Tata
Power become allies to solve the problem in the area. With great cooperation and teamwork, it
may solve/lessen the scarcity of electricity in India.

III. CONCLUSION

India suffers from severe shortages of electricity, particularly during peak hours of demand,
and often experiences blackouts lasting from several hours to days in certain areas. The average
blackouts in India is lasting 2 days in it affects a lot of people on the country. As stated on the case
above, Toshiba is one of the biggest companies that provides world class products and services
not just in India, but also in other countries too. Scarcity in electricity also affects the economic
growth of the country. These leads to the alliance of Toshiba and Tata Power to provide solutions
to the country and lessen the blackouts in the area. On observation, significant parts of the country,
particularly in rural areas, do not have access to electricity and often the rural consumers
experienced much more frequently interrupted electricity supply. Toshiba and Tata Power
provides modern transmission and distribution utility to the area to provide solution about the
certain issue.

IV. RECOMMENDATIONS
• Move towards Renewable Resources. Coal, fossil fuels as source of electricity
• Buy Energy Efficient Products. Best example is replacing bulbs with CFL’s or LED’s
• People who use different options to generate power must be given permission to plug
into the grid and getting credit for power you feed into it.
• Energy audit is a process that helps you to identify the areas where your home or office
is losing energy and what steps you can take to improve energy efficiency.
• Wind turbines near the coast lines can be implemented to provide extra energy in the
area.
