ACTIVITY NO. 1

Prepare a list of 10 Engineers who became President or General Manager of a large


company.

1. Ramon S. Ang

Ramon S. Ang is the Vice-Chairman, President,


and Chief Operating Officer of San Miguel Corporation
and a mechanical engineering graduate of Far Eastern
University. He is transforming the once-dominant brewing
company San Miguel Corp. into a more diversified
conglomerate with significant stakes in energy,
infrastructure, and other sectors. Beer and food currently
make up only 20% of San Miguel's overall revenue as a
result of his daring and competent campaigns.
Additionally, he serves as chairman of Eagle Cement
Corporation and Cyber Bay Corporation.

2. Henry Lim Bon Liong

Henry Lim Bon Liong graduated with a mechanical


engineering degree from the University of the Philippines.
With Sterling Paper Group, he is a pioneer in Philippine
paper goods. He has earned a reputation as a hybrid rice
technology pioneer and is promoting Philippine rice
self-sufficiency through his company, SL Agritech Corp.

3. Geronimo Z. Velasco

Mechanical engineer Ronnie Velasco served as the


first President of the Philippine National Oil Company
(PNOC) and was named Management Man of the Year in
1977. He served as the chairman of Republic Glass
Holdings Corp., the company that formerly owned the
pioneering factory that, starting in 1956, provided 70% of
the glass needed in the Philippines for residential and
commercial construction. In 2001, the company sold its
Republic-Asahi Glass Corp. interests to its Japanese
partner Asahi Glass. He also held the position of energy
minister from 1978 to 1986, during which time he carried
out the strategic objective of lessening the Philippines'
reliance on imported oil.

4. Fernando Bayani

Fernando Bayani graduated from Mapua with a


degree in mechanical engineering. He was once the mayor
of the Philippine city of Marikina and the chairman of the
Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA). He
founded the BF Group of Companies, which includes
firms in construction, steel, manufacturing, and real
estate, before he entered the political arena.

5. Francis Chua

Francis Chua is a University of the Philippines


industrial engineering Cum Laude graduate. He served as
a member of the UP Board of Regents before becoming
President of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and
Industry (PCCI).

6. Diosdado “Dado” Banatao

This Filipino is a high-tech entrepreneur and


innovator in Silicon Valley California. He is an electrical
engineering Cum Laude graduate from the Mapua
Institute of Technology, a prestigious engineering school
in the Philippines. He also has a master’s degree in
electrical engineering and computer science from
Stanford University.

7. Lucio Tan

Science and history enthusiast Lucio Tan attended


Far Eastern University in the Philippines to study
chemical engineering while also working. He claimed to
attend Sunday and evening classes, according to a Philstar
article. He is a self-made tycoon who has read constantly
up until this point. With a net worth of $4 billion, he is the
third richest billionaire in the Philippines for 2016.

8. Andrew N. Liveris
In 1976, Andrew N. Liveris started working at Dow
Chemical in Australia, where he also completed his chemical
engineering studies. He had previously held positions in the
company's engineering, manufacturing, sales, and marketing
divisions across various continents, but his strategy to
revitalize and reshape the business ultimately led to his
unanimous election as CEO. Liveris, a well-known supporter
of the manufacturing industry, offered a similar proposal for
reviving American manufacturing in "Make it in America:
The Case for Re-Inventing The Economy" (his approach
immediately resulted in a sixfold gain in share value). He was
appointed Co-Chair of President Obama's Advanced
Manufacturing Partnership initiative.

9. David Consunji

At the prestigious University of the Philippines in


the Philippines, David Consunji earned a degree in civil
engineering. With a net worth of $3 billion, he is listed
by Forbes as the sixth richest billionaire in the
Philippines. He is influential in infrastructure, real estate,
mining, and power, as well as construction with DMCI.

10. Greg C. Garland


Greg C. Garland began working at Phillips in
1980 as a project engineer before progressively moving
up the ranks to become a sales engineer, business service
manager, and development director. He is an
executive-level director for half a dozen businesses, on
the board of the American Chemistry Council, and on the
Chemical Engineering Industrial Advisory Board at
Texas A&M.
