Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The dictionary defines music as the art of arranging sounds in time so as to

produce a continuous unified and evocative composition.Music is the pleasing sound

created by voices or instruments following some tonal structure. If you sing, whistle,

or play an instrument, you are making music. You can also write music using the

specific language of notes. In Greek mythology, the goddesses who inspired creativity

were called the Muses, from the words mousikḕ téchnē ("the art of the muses”). This

led to the Latin mūsica. The word is also used in various idioms, such as "face the

music," which means to accept consequences, and "making beautiful music together,"

which suggests making love. If something is "like music to your ears," you are happy

to hear it.

In music impacting confidence, according to life coach Kara Loewentheil,

cultivating self confidence requires challenging yourself, committing to your goal,

and following through. By overcoming even small challenges and reflecting on your

successes, you can improve your self image over time and build confidence in your

abilities. Self-steem and music are connected in various ways. Music does not need a

language in order to connect with a listener. In this sense, music can be said to be a

language of the soul. It affects the mood of the listener and can affect the listener’s

self-esteem through the type of mood it triggers. A melody, tune, sound or some lyrics

may be attached to some memory that has been stored in the recesses of a person's

mind. The feelings associated with that memory may be the trigger for the listener's

state of self-esteem at that point in time

Considering using or studying music lessons is also a way to improve your

own self-esteem and cultivate your talents. Current research has shown that there are a

number of things you can do to help build self-confidence, including learning a

musical instrument. The arts, and music specifically, are unique in their ability to help

improve confidence in people of all ages. Performing in front of peers provides a

great opportunity to practice public speaking, presentation, and communication skills.

Many schools offer performance opportunities in both small and larger group settings,

allowing students to build up to performing on a stage, or in front of a larger crowd.

SPA (Special Program in the Arts) is a program made by the Department of

Education in the Philippines to give talented students a chance to enhance their talents

in different fields which is also implemented in Sogod National High School. In 2012,

the school started to offer this program to give talented students a chance to enhance

their talents in different fields, covering a range of art forms and disciplines. The main

focus of the program is to develop future artists who are specializing in creative

writing, visual arts, theater arts, vocal music, instrumental music, dance, and media

arts. In music, includes theory, Composition, Solo instrument, Ensemble, Chorus, and

Solo voices both Instrumental and Vocal. It offer a program designed for students

with interest and talent in vocal or instrumental music.
