Scenic Painting

The Art of… Art.

So let’s break down Scenic painting a little
What is color?

What is Paint?

The tools of the trade.

How we paint.
How does color?
White light is all colors.

White light hits an object. That objects

absorbs most colors, but reflects some.

That color is reflected into our eyes.

Black is no color reflected.

So how do we make the colors we see?

Color Mixing.
COlor Mixing

Additive color mixing begins with black and ends with Subtractive color mixing means that one begins with
white; as more color is added, the result is lighter and white and ends with black; as one adds color, the
tends to white. result gets darker and tends to black.

This is physically how our eyes see color. This is also This is how painting and coloring works.
how lighting and things like TVs and Monitors do color
What is Paint
Types of paint:

Acrylic: What we primarily use in theatre. Washes out with

water, dries relatively fast, acrylic based.

Oil: Paint based on oil. Used special chemicals to clean,

takes longer to dry.
Ok, but what is it?
Resin: Paints begin, generally as white resin. This is what
makes paint stick to things.

Pigment: The actual color, which is added to the resin.

Solvents: The thing that resin and pigment combine in,

usually water.

Additives: Other stuff. These do things like make the paint

more bendy or rough or fire resistant, etc.
BRUSHES!
All brushes come in a variety of sizes and can be used for multiple
purposes. Generally, they fall into these categories

Chip Brushes: Garbage, cheap brushes good for brute forcing stuff.
Useful for just getting paint onto stuff. Generally not as good for
detail work.

Spatter Brushes: Big, fat brushes. Used for spattering paint (we’ll
get to that later). Also good for putting LOTS of paint on something
fast.

Lining Brushes: Thinner brushes made to create lines

Detail Brushes: Smaller brushes for laying in detail.
