ADDITION POLYMERIZATION

FREE RADICAL POLYMETHYL METHACRYLATE

MECHANISM
INTRODUCTION

Chemically, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is a methyl

methacrylate (MMA) polymer and an ester of
poly(methacrylic acid). PMMA is typically produced through
the radical polymerization of MMA, but anionic and
coordination polymerizations are also possible. PMMA is a
type of methacrylic resin, also known as acrylic resin.
PMMA is a transparent thermoplastic with impact, weather,
and chemical resistance properties that is used as a
substitute for inorganic glass. PMMA is used in a variety of
applications including optical materials, automobiles,
electronics, displays, and other industries due to its rigidity
and light weight.

PROPERTIES
Rigid , strong and lightweight
Ideal for medical application
UV transparents
Can absorb 2% of water although its
insolubility in water
Dissolves in many organic solvents such
as benzene, acetone, chloroform

APPLICATION CHARACTERISTICS

Used in making contact lenses High impact strength

Lightweight
Used in acrylic sheet (bathtubs) Shatter-resistant
Outstanding optical properties.
Used in dental restorations Transparency and gloss finish.

Used in screw fixation in bone Hardness and resistance to scratching.

Excellent resistance to sun rays (ultraviolet
Used in filler for bone cavity radiation) and weathering aging.
Vapors heavier than air
Used in making artificial teeth An enoate ester and a methyl ester
High melt viscocity
