Dear Partner

This is a quick overview on what Triathlon is all about.

Triathlon is a multiple-stage competition involving the completion of three continuous

disciplines. While many variations of the sport exist, triathlon, in its most popular form,
involves swimming, cycling, and running in immediate succession over various distances.

Sprint - 750m Swim, 20km Bike, 5km Run.

Standard - 1.5km Swim, 40km Bike, 10km Run.
Middle Distance - 1.9km Swim, 90km Bike, 21.0975km Run.
Long Distance - 3.9km Swim, 180km Bike, 42.195km Run.

Historically, Triathlon originated in France of 1920, but the first official competition was held in
California, USA in September 1974. The sport made its debut on the Olympic program at the
Sydney Games in 2000 over the Olympic Distance.

History of the Rwanda Triathlon Federation (RTF)

The idea of bringing Triathlon to Rwanda was born in 2012 when the founding President Alexis
Mbaraga got an opportunity to meet with the African Triathlon Union President General
Nasser. Mr. A. Mbaraga obtained interest, and involved other sportsmen and women in the
country to start up the sport in the country.

Soon enough, the first Triathlon Community Level Training (TCLT) was organized in Rubavu,
Northen province, from August 1-3, 2013. Led by ITU instructors Travis Campbell and Franz
Studer. After the theory, officials and some 23 volunteers' athletes participated to the
demonstration of how a competition of triathlon is organized.

Since early 2017 the RTF have been registered and received its certificate from RGB. From that
day on, the RTF is organizing event frequently, at least 12 events a year. As young as the
federation is, the growth is exponential. And the growth is either countrywide touching the
youth (girls and boys), supported by the local population and very appreciated by the
expatriate community living in Rwanda, but also on an

Continental/International level. The African Triathlon Union is supporting Rwanda in the

development of Triathlon thanks to the many advantages Rwanda offers for this discipline.

Its safety, its beautiful and challenging landscape, the potential of its athletes, the
commitment of the RTF members.

Breakdown of Events

The first triathlon competition was organized in Karongi in 2013, and was received by
enthusiasm both by youth which are potential athletes, officials and leaders for future. From
that time, Rwanda Triathlon Federation with collaboration with Rubavu District and his team,
made it a target to organize the competition on Kivu Beach.

Since beginning of 2017, six clubs have immerged: 1. in Rubavu / 2. in Rwamagana / 3. in Kigali
/ 4. in Karongi. Each club host event according to their landscape.Triathlon in Rubavu, Karongi

International Competitions

Rwanda first participation in international race was in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt in March 8th
2014 where we participated in the youth age group category both in boys and girls. The female
finished third with silver medal, and the boy finished fifth. The same period saw the two
technical officials and coaches trained and ready to train more coaches back in Rwanda.

In 2018, our junior team will participate to the Youth African Games in Tunisia as well as our
technical officials team to help in the organization of the event, and in Buenos Aires for the
Youth Olympic Games.

Rwanda will host the Triathlon African Cup in August 2018 which will gathered many athletes
from abroad who will get the opportunity to cumulate points to get the chance to participate
to the Olympic Games in 2020 in Japan.

Rwanda Triathlon Federation Objective

In the immediate future, the Rwanda Triathlon Federation would like to raise awareness of the
population and make the public particularly the youth see the bright and exciting future they
can have in triathlon, encourage them to join the game. This awareness will also target
corporate institutions and show them the benefits of investing in triathlon, how it would
increase their visibility while supporting the youth in building a brighter future for themselves.

This awareness will be performed through organizing local races and give identified young
triathletes, the opportunities to participate in regional / international races.

The long-term objectives focus on making triathlon a national sport in which any Rwandan can
identify him/herself and participate. The other objective is to make Rwanda an International
Triathlon destination which host international races hence becoming an important sport
tourism attraction. To this end there are two approaches which can be developed to go hand
in hand and complement each other, sport tourism and tourism sports.

By sports tourism we mean people who would travel to Rwanda or within Rwanda to passively
or actively participate in a triathlon race. This means Rwanda triathlon shall organize a
competitive race which would attract people either to race or to watch the race. Both these
categories of people come with their own people such as technical managers, supports staff or
family members and friends as supporters.

By tourism sports we mean people who travel to Rwanda or within Rwanda primarily for
recreational triathlon event. In many cases these people travel in groups as whole families and
triathlon event take part of a tourism package from travel agents. These packages can also
include sight-seeing, gorilla trekking, national parks tours, birds watching...

RTF have also the ambitious project to create a Triathlon Academy in which athletes will be
able to train and study

Asserting the Issues

The Rwanda Triathlon Federation is faced with several issues that are likely to have a direct
impact on the implementation of the plan. The Major issues that Rwanda Triathlon is to face in
implementing its objectives are:

• Lack of initial awareness of the sport amongst the population which makes it
hard to recruit and train athletes and officials
• Lack of awareness of Triathlon amongst corporate institutions that are likely to
provide funding.
• Lack of funds hence lack basic equipment to organize a decent event.
• Lack of funding for the implementation of education and training programs
• The lack in volunteers: any individual who is approached to help in the
organization of an event is expected to get a monetary return or other incentives.

no better way to show your company’s community support than introducing a new generation
of athletes to the fastest growing sport in Rwanda, Triathlon. Your participation will reap
benefits for your business all year long!

Borrowing a leaf from Cycling and marathon races that have become very popular in Rwanda
in the recent years, Triathlon is also a sport which is likely to attract many supporters. It is
performed on open roads and venues, which leaves it open and accessible to the public.

As a sponsor, you will receive attention from radio, community / race expos, social and print
media, rack cards, race posters and on our branded race garments. You will receive high
visibility; every athlete, family member, spectator, volunteer and the public will be frequently
exposed to your company, product or service.

Actually BRALIRWA Company is our main sponsor through Coca Cola brands

It is our sincere hope that you will view this as an opportunity to promote your company but
also expand your company recognition at all levels: local, continental and international, and
