Ludlow Massacre

Max Jackson
April 29, 1914
Workers and miners working for the Colorado Fuel and iron Corporation go on strike due to low
pay, dangerous conditions, and feudal domination of their lives and towns completely controlled by
the mining companies. They were quickly kicked out of there provided homes from the company so
they set up tent so they could continue to be on strike and show picket signs. Rockefeller hired
gunman to use machine guns and rifles to them go and rain and even kill some of the people that
set up a tent. Rockefellers sent the national guard that the miners though were sent for them. But
they were there to destroy the strikers. They brought strike breakers and started arresting them by
the 100s and closing everything down. They made is through the brutal winter of 1913 to 1914. In
april 20, 1914 the national guard decided to shoot at the tents which resulted with the miners firing
back. They even set fire to the tents. It was too much for the miners, most of them escaped. 13
people were killed. A while after they retaliated by killing guards, exploding mineshafts, destroying
mines. The Denver Cigar Makers Union voted to send five hundred armed men to Ludlow.
I was one of the 400 nurses that volunteered to go help at ludlow. I think the
miners should have gone on strike but I don't think it should have come to the
national guard coming and murdering innocent children and women. I feel terrible
for those who lost family in those instances. Those companies pretty much owned
those workers. They had every right to go on strike. I just don’t think it had to go
that far.
